I just managed to pick up a "near mint" copy of Phyllica Allen's "Josephine Superstar" album for $8.00 off EBay. I was wondering how rare is this album? I'm not really familiar with the music, but always remembered the cover, so I'm hoping I'll like the album.
Also picked up in the same deal "Ain't Love Grand" album by Hott City, 12 inch singles of "Dance With Me" by The Waters, Dancin At The Disco" by Laura Taylor, "Jammin At The Disco" by Philly Cream and "Twenty Four Hours A Day" by Barbara Pennington.
Bob,
Not sure the rarity of the LP, but it sounds like you got a good deal for $8.00, as I would expect would-be buyers would include collectors of Personality/Celebrity LPs as well. Enjoy those super finds !!
I'd say it's "medium rare". Since it's Casablanca it's not like it's one of those totally obscure small labels that only pressed 500 copies, but it also wasn't a big hit back then either. I tried for years to find it locally without success and then got a couple of copies through the 'net... and then later found two copies in nearby shops. $8 is a good deal if it's in good condition.
Cheers Graham. Yeah I purchased the album from a dealer I've dealt with several times before and he seems to be very very good with accessing the quality of the vinyl. Everything that he's quoted as "near mint" (meaning rarely played) in the past, which I realize is a subjective rating, has been what I'd call "near mint" too.
If you're a fan of Jacques Morali's productions ; you will love the album.
The medley is great and J'AI DEUX AMOURS done disco-style is a lot of fun.
As a huge fan of Casablanca Records ; I've made a Casbah folder on my ipod with all the tracks off the 4 CD box set and added treasures from my vinyl collection and I must admit that these Phylicia Allen tracks are fun to play.
Try playing it next to Paul Jabara's "Disco Wedding" to make the adventure totally over-the-top.

It's campy perfection, made even better by the fact that Phylicia Rashad refuses to aknowledge it now :D but I have to admit without that camp element I wouldn't rate it with my fave Morali productions (Like an Eagle etc)
And yeah the pairing with Disco Wedding sounds perfect ;)
I think it's somewhat rare but... not to. I found a copy here in Victoria BC for instance.
