    Disco Compilations

Many posters here have lamented the lack of material on Disco compilation CDs.
Although I must agree that certain tracks do turn up with incredible regularity (my vote for most used track has to be 'Shame'), frankly I'm quite pleased with the sheer diversity of material that is (or more to the point)/ has been available. After 6 months of actively seeking out tracks on CD, I'm still coming across compilations that have a good percentage of different tracks on them. O.K., you're never going to get all the material released, but I don't think it's quite as bleak as it's made out to be. You just have to delve a little deeper. The two frustrations are (1) that I should have thought about doing this years ago and (2) how are we to know of any future releases that might contain some brilliant tracks we've been looking for, as subscription emails don't go into any track details?
    What's your take on this?

I love compilation CDs!!! You can find a lot of them on the net. I've found a bunch on CDNOW.com. You type in - THE BEST OF RECORDS, and a bunch come up. I've found some like:
    "The best of nightmare records"
"The best of Bobby "O" records" vol. 1 & 2
    "The best of Venture records"
"The best of Moby Dick records"
just to name a few. Also I've found double CD's of such greats as "Record Shack Records", "Passion Records", "Harem Records", also to name just a few. I have a huge CD collection...oh ya.. I found a CD called "DISCO "ONE HIT" WONDERS" which was really cool. It has stuff like:
    Popcorn - Hot Butter
We're on the right track - Ultra high Freuency
    Pillow Talk - Sylvia
and even "Let her in" by John Travolta
You can find some much out there on the net. With compilations I can get a lot of variety. And all the records I listed had the long versions of songs. Am I rambling on and on? :D I love vinyl and have lots but I've got tons of CDs.
    \"Dancing the night away\", forever!!!

There' definetely lots of compilation cd's out the

Among the best are the "Old Gold" series, which i think was compiled in England. it came out in 1989 - 1990 and ther was about 15-18 volumes in total.

Worth checking out is also the 3 cd set "Disco Forever" compiled by Dimitri from Paris. Many rare tracks appear on that one including the fabulous "Barely breaking Even" by the Universal Robot band (U gotta love that Name  ) with vocals by Leroy Burgess.
And don't forget the Solar Box set they made as a ten year anniversary package in 1988.

    Disco complilations

For those who like the funky sound..

The series Funky and Disco collector on Universal which are mentioned in Bernies hot-cd list, contain a lot of nice tracks.

Funny though, Amazon.com charges you $ 26 per cd, if you take the time to read some French you'll find that Amazon.fr sells them for €15 which is about $ 15 at the moment. (don't know how this works with taxes, but could be a lot cheaper still )

Its always annoying when I search for that elusive track or LP on vinyl for months or even years, & when at last I find it, someone then puts it on some CD compilation or re-releases an Lp on CD. Its even more annoying when the CD is cheaper & contains extra tracks; it takes all the fun out of searching for the vinyl! (I'm never happy am I?!)

This was one collection I also went for thanks to Bernie's list and you're right, the selection is not the ordinary fare. As for that $26.00, it's ok because if I ordered from Amazon.fr then the shipping would kill me.

I will name 3 faves of mine:

-Funkology Vol. 1 (Motown): many great and not-so-easy-to-find songs ("Square biz", "Brick house", "Let it whip"), all in 12' mixes (Marvin Gaye's "Got to give it up" is 11 minutes long!!!), with very good liner notes and plenty of info about artists and tracks. This is what should be imitated by other labels.
-Discotheque Vol. 1 (Unidisc): many Prelude classics in its entirety, almost no filler, there's no info other than basic but it sounds great. Raydio, Firefly, Brothers Johnson, Evelyn King, France Joli, Weeks and Co., Whispers, and many others, all in one CD. This is the very music I danced to at that time.
-Funkgasm (Repeat-Relativity): same as Discotheque in selection and sound, plus same as Funkology in liner notes and info. Just perfect, if maybe too funky for some.
It don't mean a thing (if ain't got that swing)

    My favorite disco compilations:

Loft 1 & 2 (Nuphonic), compiled by David Mancuso. Although they are not 100% disco, they are both very good. Loft 1 has an unreleased instrumental version of Is It All Over My Face, 11 minutes long, very nice.

Larry Levan live at the Paradise Garage (Strut). The cd version is a live mix, the triple-vinyl version is unmixed. The selection is maybe a bit overground and you'll probably have many of the tracks already, but it is a very good selection regardless.

Disco Spectrum 2 (BBE), compiled by Joey Negro. A very good one, containing some of my all time favorites.

Midas: all the street sounds compilations are classics. British label owner Morgan Khan was behind 'em and he really knew how to put out some of the best compilations ever :)

I have never seen them on CD - anybody know if there was ever any reissues. I know the Mastercut series covers some of the same material....but it's not really the same.

Today i found this obscure Disco Compilation CD)

    Various -- 1970s Disco Hits . . . CD . . . $9.99 (Item: 67831)
Tyson, Late 70s Condition: New Copy View Cart
A lost collection of rare disco work -- featuring 7 tracks recorded for the tiny Tyson Records label in New York! The tracks were all arranged by Patrick Adams, and the feel here is very similar to the best titles on Adams legendary P&P Records at the same time -- a unique blend of soul, funk, and some of the rougher club rhythms that were hitting the underground scene during the mid and late 70s. Most of the cuts have lead vocals by female singers, and titles include "You're So Good", "Wait Wait", and "Stop The Taxi" by Lonzine Wright; "Cool It" by The Paper Dolls; "You've Been Hunchin All Night" by Catherine Miller; and "You Waited Too Late" by Kimbra Trio.

Does anyone know these tracks? And can you tell me if it's worth buying?

Actually it can be. I obtained an import compilation through the UK version of amazon and saved a buck over the US rates. (I DID use a link through THIS site, of course)

The best disco comps I've bought have been the BBE ones (Joey Negro and Dimitri) and Disco Strut 1 & 2 (I think these might be bootlegs but the quality is ok) .

Loads of new tracks (to me anyway) and none of the same old, same old!
    Leather is the way forward!

I think $ 9.99 is always a good deal for such obscure stuff (I'm crazy about obscurities). I have some 12s on Tyson and they are classic underground P Adams style disco jams, with lots of instrumental breaks and synth workouts. These songs are not the best Patrick Adams penned but worth that money.

The only disco compilation I have is "Disco Fever" and I really like it. It has Chic 'Le Freak', The Jacksons 'Blame It on the Boogie', Alicia Bridges 'I Love the Nightlife', Gloria Gaynor 'I Will Survive', Village People 'YMCA', Weather GIrls 'It's Raining Men', Patrice Rushen 'Forget Me Nots' and heaps others!

    Mixmachine:
I don't know the compilation in question but 20 tracks on one cd must mean that the track are either seriously edited or short 7" versions.

Stuff like the 12" version of Cameos Word Up lasts 6 mins and the full version of theme from shaft is close to 10 mins.

You're both right. I have this disc. It has some super songs on it but they are all short versions. The longest one is L.T.D.'s "Back in love again" at 4:38. Most of them are in the 3 minute range.
One of the best CD's I've found on the net is called -
"HI-NRG CLASSICS" The definitive 12" collection.
It's a double CD with the following:
    disc one:
    #1.Absolutely Fabulous - Pet Shop Boys 3:45
#2.Brand new lover - Dead or alive 9:03
    #3.Nothing compares to you - Chyp-Notik 6:31 {super}
    #4.No frills love - Jennifer Holiday 7:42
    #5.Love in the shadows - E.G Daily - 8:43
    #6.Body rock - Maria Vidal - 6:26
    #7.Earthquake - The flirtations - 8:48
    #8.Follow me - Amanda Lear - 10:48
#9.I feel love - Donna Summer - 15:45 Patrick Cowley mix
    Disc two:
    #1.I am what I am -Gloria Gaynor - 5:56
    #2.Some people - Cliff Richard - 5:54
    #3.Neverending Story - Limahl - 5:20
    #4.Ritmo De La Noche - Click 2 - 5:28
    #5.Don't leave this way - Jeanie Tracy - 6:21
    #6.I like you - Phyllis Nelson - 7:28
    #7.Rise up - Parachute club - 5:10
    #8.You're so vain - Chimira - 6:33 {super number}
    #9.Live to tell - Blonde Ambition - 6:54
    #10.Memory - Menage - 7:09
    #11.Where is my man? - Eartha Kitt - 10:05

All of these songs are great songs and all I paid was $10.99
Check it out, this is a super double CD for anybody who loves dance music.

#3.If you could read my mind - Viola Wills - 5:02
#4.Gonna get along without you now - Viola Wills - 4:21
    #5.Take a chance on me - Waterfront Home - 5:29
#6.The best part of breaking up - Roni Griffith - 4:19
    #7.Native love - Divine - 7:32
    #8.I am what I am - Gloria Gaynor - 5:38
    #9.So many men , so little time - Miquel Brown - 6:56
    #10.Searchin' - Hazell Dean - 5:44
    #11.Born to be alive - Patrick Hernandez - 4:40
    #12.Rocket to your heart - Lisa - 8:25

Just wanted to help those who don't know of things
like this. As I said, there are five volumes, and they're
    all very good.
