    Jennifer Hudson

Finding an artist whose natural talents shine through is pretty hit and miss these days but I'm quite liking the few releases that Jennifer Hudson has put out so far. She has that throaty hugeness to her voice...one that is slowly becoming distinctive to these ears....and I think somewhat of a throwback to that glorious era of 70s soul.

Here is her song All Dressed In Love from the Sex In The City soundtrack....how incredibly wonderful!

This is the new single Spotlight...another fan-made one...but the official video wasn't available. I'm really looking forward to her album.

I was gonna love her but she's a religion nut apparently. No? I did read the original interview but I can't recall exactly what she said.

I re-read it lol. I don't like it. I think stars should have no personal life and opinions, it would make things so much easier for us, wouldn't it? LOL I?M KIDDING.

She doesn't have a bad voice, but I don't like her, there's nothing special about her imo. And her rendition of And I Am Telling You I'm Not Going is nowhere near as good as the dozen versions Jennifer Holliday records in studio or live.

You can see I don't like her, can you? hehe ;)

I can understand your views but I'm seeing her in a different light. For some reason, she's not following the usual course of the American black female R&B singer these days. This is a good thing. Her genuine vocal is out there...not tweaked and distorted and hidden by all the bells and whistles which seems to be today's standard practice.

I'm thinking that she's someone the media and music community can't categorize right now. She sings real good but they messed it all up in the media's eyes by casting her in a movie and then winning a damn Oscar! Now who is she? She's a bit too physically large to be another Beyonce....she doesn't have that dissin', angry stance of a Mary J. Blige....hmmm....no rapping....could she be just a young woman who loves to belt out a tune?!

    Thanks for the videos, discokicks!
I think Jennifer sounds just like Lolleatta Holloway in the "Dressed in Love" tune...Hope she sings "old-school-style" songs in her album... I remember waiting forever to hear Fantasia's (the OTHER America Idol competitor, who eventually won the title) first cd, hoping it'd be a jazzy,R&B affair...what I heard was rap-crap...major disappointment! Say it won't be so, Ms Hudson!

This is exactly what I'm hoping too....somebody who will boldly take R&B back when the emphasis was on the voice and emotion rather than image and tough stance. I just checked her myspace page and it looks really hopeful! Check out her cover of Neither One Of Us and wow, take a listen to Stand Up...hopefully both on the upcoming album.

I think her style fits her personailty and the trends today, at the same time match her body type and skin tone. I see nothing wrong with the way she dresses, but the dress Beyonce' had on, on the VMAs this year was something to question.

I agree with you, not only do I like her voice but the song has a "human" sound missing from the tiny bits of "R & B" that I bypass when channel surfing these days. I'm a bit surprised because the only other time I'd heard her was her rendition of "And I Am Telling You" which I thought lacked the rage of Jennifer Holiday's version. There's another song I heard recently that I also thought stood out a bit, though the singer is not nearly as distinctive as any of my favorites (Patti Austin, Teena Marie, Aretha). The song is Sunshine Anderson's "Heard it All Before" (it's probably available on YouTube). It's very sassy, kinda of a female put-down of triflin' males. I like the part where she and her man are in bed and he "taps her shoulder, thinkin' he's gon' get him some!"
