What would be considered Lush Disco music?

I was recommended to start a party I was having with some Lush Disco music.
What would be considered Lush Disco, something most people would know.
    A liitle list of 5 to 10 would be a great help.:icon_biggrin:

Thumbs up Re: What would be considered Lush Disco music?

If the definition of "LUSH DISCO" is SLEAZY, not RICH, a premise I will continue on, then I have five for you!
    5)"NASTY GIRLS"-Vanity 6
    4)"HEAD"-Prince:icon_confused:
    3)"PILLOW TALK"-Sylvia:icon_razz:
    2)"JUNGLE FEVER"-The Chakachas:icon_lol:
1)"LOVE TO LOVE YOU BABY"-Donna Summer

There are others, but you said five!:icon_biggrin:

This person's suggestion is far too interpretive. Ask 5 people what that is, you'll get 5 different views.

If that person could give you a single track suggestion, it give you a jumping-off point for your search of what they think is "Lush Disco". (Honestly, the term itself cracks me up.:icon_lol:)

If it's your party... Program it however you want.

Re: What would be considered Lush Disco music?

    Lush is defined as:

"Having luxuriant foliage, marked by extravagance, opulence, or abundance. fresh, succulent, juicy"

The word is a tad ambiguous and open to different interpretations...but I'd go for the big string-laden, heavily orchestrated drama pieces..

    "MacArthur Park" - Donna Summer
"Cheri/Forbidden Love/Fire In Your Heart" - Madleen Kane'
"Love In C Minor" - Cerrone
"Midnight Love Affair" - Carol Douglas
"Fly Me On The Wings Of Love "- Celi Bee
"Begin The Beguine" - Johnny Mathis
    'Love Story" - Andy Williams
    "Romeo & Juliet" - Alec R. Costandinos
"If There's Love/ Hazy Shades Of Love" - Amant
    "Mellow Lovin'"- Judy Cheeks
"Don't Let Me Be Misunderstood" - Santa Esmeralda
"Disco Extravaganza" - The George Bussey Experience
"Magic Bird Of Fire" - Salsoul Orchestra
"Symphony of Love" - Miquel Brown
"Cocomotion/Dancing In Paradise" - El Coco
"Make That Feeling Come Again" - Beautiful Bend
"Touch Me In The Morning" - Marlena Shaw
"Fill My Life With Love" - St. Tropez
"Give Me Love/ Love Is Here/Love Is The Answer" - Cerrone
"From East To West" - Voyage
    "Souvenirs" - Voyage
"Love Is The Ultimate" - Ultimate
"My Sweet Summer Suite" - Love Unlimited Orchestra

Stuff like that there. "Lush" stuff.

I disagree with MARKDEFAD, I think "LUSH" means a drunkard, a sleaze, as in "You are such a lush" Mark sees "LUSH" as extravagant, as in " look at the lush setting". So that is two interpretations of it. That leads me to Steven Freeman. I see his point all the better now. There are possibly other perspectives as well. That makes Steven's point even more a likely proper answer. But is it the right answer? That is up to you!:icon_eek:

As I see it there is no "right" answer as it is an interpretation,we have seen some valid viewpoints .Denis your song choices are all great songs....BTW Marky You mentioned some of my FAVORITE songs..Stephen introduced me to "Love Is The Ultimate" - Ultimate..on one the cd's of his work he sent me
Stephens suggestion seems most logical...ask for some song choices..That way you will get Their interpretaion.."that would be the one that counts for the party

    3 ideas:

Educate your partygoers! howsabout printing up your party's playlist so they'd search out this wonderful "new" (to them) music after the party's over?

I'd start the party off with slower, lush disco...Barry White, etc...when you feel the crowd is beginning to "get down", throw on some "dancin songs" such as "Get Down Tonight", "Let's Start the Dance", "Dance (Disco Heat)" or "You Can Do It" to get them frenzied up

Give the dancers something they're not expecting..keep them interested..play Archies" "Sugar, Sugar", Stones' "Emotional Rescue" (makes the crowd raunchy, trust me),or Ventures' Hawaii 5-0 theme (I once heard a slightly slowed-down original version in a club in NYC in 84; when the crowd recognized what they were dancing to the floor just EXLODED!)...Steam's "Na Na Hey Hey" too!

it's your party and you'll play what you want to!

OK...I see now...this is where the term "lush disco music" came from...and why the question was asked.

So blame srg ...and he was referring to Barry White. Can I get a lush "Love's Theme" amen????

WHOA, Some early BARRY WHITE might be "LUSH", but by no means LOVE'S THEME. I know Marky was kidding(You were, right!), but "LUSH", the SLEAZY definition, includes tons of SEXUALLY CHARGED songs. You can go in that direction, but isn't where you would end up anyhow?:icon_lol:

Dayna...your Carol Ann references crack me up.

I'm reminded of a scene in "Mommie Dearest" ...is it at the JC funeral? it's toward the end of the film...where Carol Ann seems to emerge from behind a potted plant and enters a scene...it always made me laugh out loud. She was so muted she literally was hidden behind a potted palm. Am I making this up???? :icon_eek:

This is such a great site, I love being on it. Get used to me, I am here, I'm staying and it is only the beginning!! -- LUSH DISCO is a good thing. Your interpretation or mine. The key word of course is DISCO!! That is what it all is about, isn't it?

Excellent definition and selections. This is what I think "lush" is as well. But I don't think I ever heard "From East to West" segue into "Souvenirs". Isn't "Souvenirs" the first track on Fly Away?

Hey thanks RobbaDobba...that list was sorta off the top of my head with a big nod of acknowledgment to Jerry Bonham's playlists from the RtP cds I've been listening to.

No I didn't mean they were segued...just 2 titles by the same artist...I was too lazy to type them separately. Sorry for the confusion.

I do remember Vera Charles (Bea Arthur) in Mame being called a Lush!:icon_lol:

Lush as in drunk is not a term used in Australia and I don't think it's used in England either.
The term Lush as used in Australia is as to describing a tropical jungle or something rich and luxurious.:icon_cool:

Could this be the birth of a new term for some Disco music.

Yes I know how some people hate labels!

    Sound the alert!!!
Musical Comedy Queen to the rescue!!!!

OK, first off, Vera Charles is a character in "Auntie Mame" and later, the musical version, "Mame"...which co-starred Beatrice Arthur....not "Gypsy."

Second, yes the word "lush" is slang for a drunk in the U.S..

    Webster's 2nd definition:

[origin obscure] Slang; one who habitually drinks liquor to excess. Hence the song "Lush Life" recorded by many folks, but notably, for us, by Donna Summer on her Quincy Jones produced LP.

the first definition, as I typed earlier:
[from luscious] Having luxuriant foliage, marked by extravagance, opulence, or abundance. fresh, succulent, juicy

    OK. class dismissed....

Have a lush birthday...whichever way you choose to celebrate....OR do it BOTH ways....extravagantly and drunk!! :icon_lol:

Lush disco music includes a nice orchestral background and a fairly slow beat. I would recommend:

    1. Fern Kinney - Together We Are Beautiful
    2. Carol Douglas - Fell In Love For The First Time Today
    3. Tina Charles - I'll Go Where The Music Takes Me
    4. Quartzlock - Looking For Someone To Love Tonight
    5. Johnny Mathis - Begin The Beguine
    6. Barry White - Your Sweetness is My Weakness
    7. Frankie Valli - Heaven Above Me
    8. Idris Muhammad - For Your Love
    9. Gloria Estefan - Don't Let This Moment End
