Can enough credit be given to these guys? :icon_cool:
As the first act signed to Gamble and Huff's Philly International label, they helped carve the way for all that would come out of the Sigma studios.
I'm listening to the groundbreaking 1972 LP BACK STABBERS featuring: .
Musicians:
Piano: Leon Huff
Organ: Leonard Pakula
Bass: Ronnie Baker
Drums: Earl Young
Guitar: Norman Harris, Roland Chambers, Bobby Eli
Congos and Bongos: Larry Washington
Vibes: Vince Montana
Don Renaldo and his strings and horns
and there's one song on there whose theme /message seems particularly prophetic :
titled:
(IT'S) TIME TO GET DOWN
..... as proved to be the case when the disco scene soon erupted thereafter ... !! :icon_mrgreen::icon_biggrin: ..... It was a time to get down like no other !
One other point of note about this song .... ... is this not one of THE first such songs to have such a decidedly pronounced 4/4 beat ????
Sorry no youtube vid of this one yet to link here but here's a sample:

Something else strange:
Your label scan DD says this song was arranged by Leonard Paluka :icon_confused: .... the BACK STABBERS album credits Bobby Martin.
Leonard arranged only the song WHEN THE WORLD'S AT PEACE according to the jacket ....which also spells his name as Leonard Pakula :icon_confused::icon_question:
follow up:
look at the arranger here :
and then here:
somebody wanted their proper royalties !!!!
second follow up:
looks like Bobby was having a rough time of it in getting credit for his work on this project . They also sighted PAKULA as the arranger on this cut as well :
Betcha those label meetings weren't pretty!!

that is odd but im guessing the bobby martin is right, i have the c.d of this album if i can find it ill check that will be interesting, the other funny thing is about this record all these years later it kind of feels like a chart hit yet it wasnt here.
They might have done a misprint initially and then rectified it by putting on Martin's name.
As for first four on the floor, Time To Get Down could be one of the first. Here's another track, even though the down beat is doubled up, it sounds like the kick drum is being hit at the same time as the snare:
There's also tom hits on top of the snare in the verse sections, but the toms are absent on the other parts of the song.
