Is There Such Things As Disco Music Conventions?

I've been to and organized science fiction and comic conventions but are there such things as disco music conventions? I don't mean a record collectors fair, but an actual convention with speakers, panels, guests, auctions, record/merchandise dealers etc, or is this the sort of event that's not happened before now? This would be the sort of event where the general public could go to and attend; not just for record industry types.

I haven't heard of it. Conventions require celebrities, and I'm guessing they'd charge a larger fee for an appearance that's more than an actor who hasn't had a steady movie or TV gig for several years. I would guess that the expectation would be for them to perform as opposed to just sitting around signing stuff, unlike movie actors, novel writers, etc..., and that would drive up the cost of their appearance since it would almost be like a concert. Then again, I've never been to any conventions, so I don't know how the event is organized or what kind of itineraries are set up.

Yes, it might depend on who your guest were. If it were a record producer, DJ, or mixer they could do a Q&A session, but if you had booked a performer I suppose you'd have the option of a Q&A session or mini-concert or both. I know when I use to plan Dr. Who conventions that guest fees were in the range of $1000-20,000 CAD for a guest from the tv show. It depended on who the person was and whether they played a starring or supporting role or how long ago they were in the show. I suppose if no one has ever done a disco music convention this might be a type of event to try?

I was at a recent record collectors fair here in Vancouver and they had a guest - they didn't really promote this fact - who was Chad Allen from The Guess Who. I had no idea who he was. I walked past where he was sitting signing albums and merchandise, and here was this grey haired old man about 65 sitting behind the table. I thought at first maybe he was one of the dealers until I saw I saw this small sign saying, "Chad Allen, Guess Who". :icon_question::icon_question::icon_question: I thought, yeah, who's he? And went hunting for more records.

It certainly would be a cool thing to try. I guess the casual person would expect a disco convention to be a music concert, though. But then again, conventions really cater to the hardcore, so having guys like Tom Moulton or Vince Montana doing Q&As would be worth hearing.

So you did Dr Who conventions? I was lucky enough to meet Peter Davison in person when he visited a local retail store back in '04. Really nice guy. And tall too! I kept referring to him as the doctor, it was pretty embarrassing. I had never been so struck by a star in my life, and having worked retail, I'd seen a fair number of celebrities pass through. I know this is going off on a tangent (feel free to send the response in a private message), but who from Dr Who did you get to appear? Any of the late Doctors before they passed away?

Yeah I think it would be kind of interesting to try to see if such an event could be pulled off. I suppose you could have performers attend and they could talk about there careers, do a q&a session.

LOL! My secrets out. :icon_razz: I lost count the number of conventions I've organized. Somewhere between 10-20 I think.
