Although it's not dance or house, I just needed to express my heavenly pleasure with Duffy's album now that it's been released in Canada. Her big UK hit Mercy introduced us to the unique soul of this young woman and the comparisons of her talents to that of Dusty Springfield are very noticeable.
Duffy's voice is such a welcome return to those days when raw vocals ruled. Expression and emotion is so easily conveyed when studio wizardry leaves them alone. I'm also floored by her mature outlook and conclusions reached expressed in her songwriting all at the tender age of 23.
Her current UK release Warwick Avenue is intense...the one in love who has to bravely end the relationship because of the lack of love coming back from her partner. I love the line from Delayed Devotion.."but I know that all your poetry just comes from your insecurity". This is a woman who's been paying attention to the fun times of love and relationship.
My favourite song is Serious....a comfortable beauty with its familiar 60s/early 70s slow groove feel and then there's Syrup and Honey...simply wonderful. Man...ten songs is just not enough! I hope the next album comes along quickly.

Duffy's CD is the soundtrack to my summer so far, on constant play. The next UK single is "Warwick avenue" and I defy anyone to watch the video on Youtube and not get a lump in their throat, it's just gorgeous and looks so sincere! Industry reports are that Aimee is a really nice person too and unlike the other Amy (Winehouse) avoids drink and drugs. Way to go girl! :icon_biggrin:

Oh, I so agree....the song and the video is incredibly heartwrenching and you're right...the sincerity is there. That's what I look for in music....

Duffy has been around for a few years - I saw her perform in a Camden bar ages ago and always knew with that voice she would be a big success. She is also a very nice genuine humble person. Therefore when the album came out it was eagerly awaited - knowing a few of the tracks on it already - it is a good album - but if I was a music critic - a bit too melancholy - it's like every song is about her failed relationship with her ex-boyfriend. At the end of the album I was thinking "get over it already!". Having said that Warwick Avenue is an awesome track - another London underground station on the map!!
Anyway you still can't disguise the fact that she is another world class British female vocalist. I am looking forward to the second album, which I am hoping is more uptempo!
Duffy has of course released records (well, CDs) prior to "Rockferry", Specifically "Hefan Angel" ('fly angel') in her native Welsh language. I do hope that her current success in the States (and elsewhere) raises awareness of the Celtic languages in general and perhaps Welsh in particular. I say this because I read something on YouTube (commenting on the Hedfan Angel song) that made me smile and feel oddly sad at the same time; I quote:
"All I have to say is that this is pretty damn good I didn't know that a wales had a native language. They don't teach that kind of stuff in America. Interesting "
I don't speak any celtic languages myself, but have been exposed to the Irish and Welsh languages fairly often living in England and travelling in Wales and Ireland. I am really happy that those languages have survived and indeed, flourish in certain areas and I say again, it would be cool if Duffy's success prompted people to explore her previous work and then be 'exposed' to the very existance of the various Celtic languages that exist. :icon_biggrin:
My best friend just sent this to me cause he knows I love Dusty Springfield and what a wonderful surprise it is.I love the restrained production and the focus on her
voice. It brings back memories of 60's Dusty and Lulu
yet manages to sound new and modern.Gorgeous!
Yeah, I agree. There is that Dusty quality, and early Lulu. On one or two notes, I can even hear Deniece Williams! Best left to say that Duffy is a unique talent that I hope will grow and grow.
PS. Although I do not condone such things myself, there are (apparently) some torrent sites that share one or two of Duffy's live shows which are (apparently) very good quality (not that I would know first hand of course!!).
