Disco Songs with Great Listening value but no dance appeal

I would have to say for me it would be the pretty Disco like Boris Midney or Costandinos "Romeo and Juliet" which ironically is my 2nd favorite Disco song..I just dont like dancing to it..I like the more soulful funkier grooves to dance to.But the pretty Disco has that hypnotic erotic listening appeal that I can listen to for hours.

    Hi Dayna

I am totally with you on this. When I spin at our parties it's the pretty Disco that gets the Hustlers on the floor, but it's the Dirty Disco that gets the party people out. Our formula has worked very well for us....2hrs of Hustle music then the Dirty to Hi NRG for the rest of the night. I love the pretty stuff....but give me some Sweet Dynamite and I am in Disco Heaven.

This is why I never much cared for the string-laden Mantovanni-esque Disco of the Costandinos/Midney/Cerrone Euro school...it didn't make me wanna dance!!!! :icon_confused::icon_confused::icon_confused:

    MORODER DID
..... Make me wanna dance, that is.

I agree, I love listening to the kind of music but don't find it rhythmically strong enough to appeal to my dancing feet. But the number 1 song that seems to always be considered disco (but I've always considered more of an R&B ballad) is "Love to Love You Baby". I would consider it good background music for an activity other than dancing, if you know what I mean.

yeah, "Love To Love You Baby" is more of a soundtrack for sex than a dance song...given it's relatively low bpm (98?)...but it launched the careers of Moroder & Summer...and "disco" liked the slower tempos in it's early days. So on Quaaludes-- it seemed like a dance song, I guess.

Yeah, I don't really care for a lot of the late 70s Euro stuff. Hardly any of it makes me wanna dance. I find the grittier, soul disco stuff from this side of the Atlantic penetrates my soul and makes me wanna dance like I got ants in my pants. I don't even think dancing to Lady Bump by Penny McLean would be cool. or El Bimbo! (yes, I still dislike this track)

The original Hustle was a 7-step move, that fared better in slower bpms. Especially when you were throwing in theatric moves, spins, direction changes, etc... It looked a lot less like you were, simply throwing your partner around the dance floor. With the advent of the 3-step Hustle people were able to move faster, easier.

Re: Disco Songs with Great Listening value but no dance appeal

My personal view is that you CAN dance to Cerrone, Midney and Costandinos but not to all their tracks.

F.i. "I've found love" is a Dancefloor filler (certainly in Europe (OK, minus the United Kingdom :icon_lol: )) but, no, "Romeo and Juliet", "Synergy" and stuff like that is more for loungy clubs where they can trance everybody who's open for a more sophisticated Disco sound.

Now I have a question for Jussik and Aïcha and I hope they read this thread. The Parisian Discoqueer and Discolounge sets: do you guys play those tracks and does the public dance to it or do you just mix excerpts in from time to time?

And what do the peeps here think of one of my favourite tracks ever: Herb Alpert's "Rotation"???? Danceable or just Tranceable?

My 45 of Rotation used to get heavy rotation on my home turntable. But it never got me dancing. I recently heard it on Smooth Jazz radio. They also play Rise. I think Rotation has aged better. Still sounds fresh.

I always wondered how people danced to it. It's true that early disco tended to be slower (Grace Jones' gorgeous La Vie En Rose comes to mind). Watching Moroder's career alone it's always interested me about how BPMs sped up then slowed down--his productions got faster and faster BPM till 1979--then in the 80s the grooves slowed down again--Flashdance is much slower feelign to me than, say, Last Dance

I have been listening to all the Costandinos material that Stephen so graciously made for me and after listening to it all I will have to contradict myself and say that I could dance to most of it ,I was only VERY familiar with songs like Romeo and Juliet,Iv'e Found Love and You're the Most Precious Thing in My Life and Accidental Lover"which I love". I had never really given time to songs like Synergy,The Hunchback of Notre Dame,Judas Iscariot, Simon Peter,Eloise, etc
It would be an almost trancelike dancing for me..
or a partner hustle..But that music is BEAUTIFUL~!!
    Thank you again Stephan..

You have no idea how happy that makes me!
"I've Found Love..", "Judas Iscariot" and "Eloise" are 3 of the most perfectly beautiful recordings I've ever heard! And to share them with someone who "gets it", is a privilege.
And "Storyteller 3" is under construction...

Ah but when disco first started to get popular wasn't the trend for dancers to actually do dancing together as a couple whereas as the years went on, like around 77 or 78, the trend for dancing together was separate - no touch dancing? I seem to recall this as there were all these couple-like dances/touch dancing/twirling, almost like jive/ballroom that seemed to be popular in the early years. Take for example the bump. You did this with someone else. Then there was the bell that was done solo to "Ring My Bell".

Eeesh! I am dating myself remembering all these dance names. LOL!

As I remembered couples Danced to 'Love to love" and "La vie en rose" "Last dance" (intro) and songs like this as you would a slow ballad, but a bit faster to keep up with the beat and using more exaggerated moves and "dips" that one wouldn't usually do during a "real" Slow ballad dance.

Think of Tango dancers, some couples liked to get really sexy and would start "grinding" each others bodies (think of "Dirty Dancing" the movie) wrapping each others legs while swaying slowly side to side to the music performing sexy "slow motion" moves, many times culminating in a prolong exaggerated dips.

Couples that did this well were a lot of fun to watch, but as the years went by into the late 70's this kind of face to face 'touch dancing' all but disappeared.

Well Iw as born in 1980 so I don't remember :icon_cool: But actually yeah, from all I've seen and researched into disco I'm pretty sure you're right--all fo the older dances were definetly couples dances and largely as the tempi speeded up it got more solo (and I think less set dances--though I've never heard of the Bell before--gotta find out how to do that one...)

Dayna: if you think LISTENING to pretty disco is fun, try listening to it when you ride a bicycle. I listen to Midney, Cerrone or Costandinos when I ride and it takes my mind on such a journey that I'm not even aware that I'm exercising. But like you, I wouldn't want to dance to it, and never really got the chance. Discos I used to go to in the old days would only play small snippets of the disco suites (when they played them at all....)
