Hmmm, good one.
Right now I'll go with Carrie Lucas. Everytime I hear her sing "Dance With You" she's got me.
We could discuss this topic during years.
Candi Staton has for me the perfect voice : warm and powerful.
On many songs her voice is the only thing you hear
I'm only 20 Years old and unfortunately I haven't known the glorious years of disco, but Candi gave me the taste of it, and I am now fan enough to post on this forum.
Thanks to her

Find them and destroy them!
Not only do I feel she has the best female disco voice but the best voice in the rock era. There are few, if any, that can reach the range Cheryl can. Her voice is not only a voice, it's an instrument. Just listen to the high pitch sounds she makes on Star Love and other songs. What's amazing is the she still has it as evident by her show stoping performance on ABC's The Disco Ball.
DevP
My best femal vocal award, regardless of any genre, would definetly go to Vanessa bell Armstrong.
She may not be a disco artist but that voice can send shivers down anyone's spine. :)
Close seconds are Cheryl Lynn, Tawatha Agee, Regina Belle & the Clark Sisters.
I'd say the finest pipes belong to Martha Wash (Two Tons Of Fun, Sylvester, The Weather Girls, Black Box, C+C Music Factory) and she certainly spans the eras better than anybody else.
However, my heart belongs to Miss Viola Wills.
for pipes Lollita Halloway, for soulful sound I pick Barbara Roy (Ectasy Passion and Pain) , for jazzy/soulful, Marlena Shaw, current favorite, smooth Norah Jones. there are so many other... Cheryl Lynn is amazing in 'Star Love" , how could she hold that note for so long? I used to play this song over and over to see if the voice was manipulated in post production, I could never tell, but I think is the real thing.
How could I forget Barbara Roy. She was excellent too. Anyone remember her pre-house music cuts "Gotta See You Tonight" and "Gonna Put Up A Fight" of 1986?
Just pulled 'em out - they still hold up today 8)
Loleatta Holloway. She does not make me actually fantasize though. A good Diva like Grace Jones or Amanda Lear always gets my corks a-popping.
Uh, essscuuuuse me , folks....BUT what about DONNA SUMMER, DONNA SUMMER AND DONNA SUMMER?????
How quickly we forget!!!!
"Lost inside adorable illusion...."
One of the sweetest and sexiest female vocals I've heard, I think is Debra Laws (sister of Hubert Laws perhaps, or wife?). She hasn't really made any orthodox disco, rather jazzfunk (made during the disco years)... anyway her voice is really beautifully clear and sort of fragile... really beautiful, almost makes you fall in love with her...! She's sung on, as far as I know, only one record released in her own name, "Very Special" from 1981. But the best performance I think are on the Hubert Laws tunes "Family" (1979) and "False Faces" (1978)...
Other great female disco/jazzfunk vocals are of course Randy Crawford and Teena Marie...
Marky: You still don't get it do ya? We're all trying to forget Donna Bloody Summer. :lol:Originally Written by markydefad
I always found her voice a little nasal for my taste. There again, she's probably got a much better voice than I give her credit for. Female voices just never turned my head a hell of a lot, but...................... if I have to nominate one, it would have to be..........drum roll............Vicki Sue Robinson, specifically on 'Turn The Beat Around'. That record and her singing is sooooo joyous and uplifting, it makes me feel young again.
Uh...Donna-haters (???!!!) at Discomusic.com???? Say it ain't so, Joe!!!!!
I think Ms. Summer's classic recorded oeuvre speaks for itself...so I'll waste no more time on that. :P
Now, some other wonderful voices that merit a mention would be: Phyllis Hyman, Stephanie Mills, Jean Carn, Deniece Williams, Melba Moore, Patti Austin and the afore-mentioned Randy Crawford. These are some of my faves.![]()
"Lost inside adorable illusion...."
Marky: Believe it or not, Donna's records didn't grace my turntables longer than absolutely necessary. Trouble for me was, she kept on having hits.
I liked Bad Girls and Hot Stuff (blinding guitar solo), but the rest..........I could take or leave.
So none of you loves Candi's Voice?
My heart is broken
I\'m a Victim ( of th very Song I sing )
It's impossible to say only one... :P
I like the sweet as honey voice of the "Boogie Oogie Oogie" female lead vocal , the name of her is... Janice M.Johnson, Am I right ??? I think so !!!
.
To Com King,
Before you slash your wrists,, of course, I love Candi Staton. Her "Young Hearts Run Free" is a classic as are "Victim" and "When you Wake up Tomorrow". Love them all.
I just thought she had already been mentioned.![]()
What about Chaka Khan???? Now that's a great voice no one's mentioned. ("I'm every woman/it's all in me" ; Once you get started/ you just can't stop, no just can't stop"; "I feeeeeel for you";"Ain't nobody loves me bettah"; What cha gonna do for me?")
Well, you get the picture. :D
"Lost inside adorable illusion...."
And nobody mentionned Jocelyn Brown, Diana Ross and Thelma Houston ....
Those voices are not my favorite but they deserve to be named
I\'m a Victim ( of th very Song I sing )
I must admit I've never been a big Donna Summer fan, but I do like that "Our Love" cut. I think it was on "Bad Girls" but I've never met anyone who knew it.
Guess that ends right now ![]()
And so do i.e. Patrice Rushen, Chaka Khan and the late Sharon Redd - Just my 2c.And nobody mentioned Jocelyn Brown, Diana Ross and Thelma Houston ....
Those voices are not my favorite but they deserve to be named
This is hard. I'd go for Martha Wash cause she puts the church back in disco. Chaka is great, but sometimes that lack of vibrato is like chalk on a blackboard. But, when she says, "What cha gonna do for me", nobody gives a **** about vibrato. Raw talent. :D
Phyllis Hyman and Jean Carn, my gawd. They could turn gay men straight and make straight men weak. These gifted jazz artists could sing it all, and then some.
I don't know the name of the female lead from Odyssey. She, like our dear Sheryl from South Shore Commission  , has a voice in the lower registers. But hers glides on silk 8) , not sandpaper.
Love Has No Time or Place
