A 6 hrs gig coming up....

How I'm going to stay alert on Feb 14th I have no idea but I think I'm going to spin:
Supermenlovers: THE PLAYER - Everything in this brand new French project spells D.I.S.C.O, from the gorgeous sleeve image to the Daft Punk-esque neodisco beats.
Golden Boy with Miss Kittin: OR - another one for the fashionistas, but isn't this kind of early 80's electropop boogie last year's thing already? Apparently not.
The Monstars: KAMASSA BEEF / CUMBA CUMBA - personal fave of the moment, sounding as if the Morali/Belolo/Hurtt team had gone insane and done a Burundi-style freakout with screaming tribal musicans from Kinhasa.
MBT Soul: Answer Me My Love - catchy and kitschy Ultimate/Amant-style semi-instrumental disco with a choice girlie chorus
Fajardo ´76: C'MON BABY DO THE LATIN HUSTLE - The Eddie Drennon hit got included in one of the recent boogie comps so, instant cult fame for Let's Do The Latin Hustle. This superior Fajardo track will probably make for a perfect companion.
New Paradise: USA DISCO PEOPLE / THE FRENCH WAY- judging by the cover and the producers, this is the same group as Paradise Birds. These titles sound much the same as the Birds's hits but there's added Village People-ish stomp here and more gay lyrics.
Performance: DYNAMITE DRAGSTER - fast melodic Bimbo Jet-type hi-hat pounder, better than the group's RED BULLET
Astrud Gilberto: ALL OF ME - quality Vince Montana prod. midtempo chugger, with hard rhythm and a great instrumental jam sequence.
Miroslav Vitous: NEW YORK CITY - could this sound good with Michele's Disco Dance?
    Dennis Coffey: WINGS OF FIRE
Esther Phillips: MAGIC'S IN THE AIR / BOY I REALLY TIED ONE ON
Max Berlins: DREAM DISCO - a rather short, fast but surprisingly funky groove thing
Don Ray: STANDING IN THE RAIN - again, one that got picked up by the likes of Dj Dimitri and Danny Krivit. So, one has to spin it if only to make the kids realese that while it's pretty good there are so many good ones that never get re-realesed, such as:
Revelacion: CROCOS DANCE pts 1&2 - perfect blending of Afro and eurodisco styles, goes well with Tattoo Woman and Anikana-O
Will Downing: A LOVE SUPREME - one of the best of the 80s? Could sound good out of Ain't No Man or Havana's Satisfy My Desire.
also, this being Finland, the new JIMI TENOR, plus all the danceable CTI label titles I can dig up.

A Miroslav Vitous disco track, Jussik??

Now that's something i'd never guess the existence of.
I only know him for his acoustic bass playing on straight ahead jazz records from the likes of Lazlo Gardony and lots of recordings on the ECM label.

do you have more info about it??

K-Bee: Oh dear, you haven't lived!
The Miroslav Vitous track was much hyped by the Soul Mafia in the UK when it was released in 1979. One of those records that was always more hip than it was good IMO. Ultra fast 134 BPM or thereabouts, what I would call synthetic jazz funk, i.e. no real balls, not much real jazz. I wouldn't even rate it as highly as Atmosfear and it's leagues away from Azymuth; oh and the bassline is very similar to Musique 'In The Bush' for the first 2 or 3 minutes and I recollect mixing it with Harry Thuman 'Underwater' though it's nowhere as entertaining. A dancer with a small d and very tribal sounding. Probably 20 years ahead of its time.
It is available on at least 1 compilation CD that I've seen in my travels.
What was even more shocking was to see Dennis Coffey - Wings of Fire. My goodness Jussi, you're getting commercial!!

Well, - can't know 'em all Quinny. After all, I was only 6 when it was released. At the time I was still a few years away from buying my first LP (actually not that many.. :) )

However, this is what these forums are all about. Helping each other out. Thanks a lot Quinny. I'll see if I can find it somehow.
I'm happy to know that an artist who now is known for doing free form jazz also has a funky past 8)

well, the same was the case for Sun Ra I suppose.

KBee: Glad to be of service.
I wondered how your memory could normally be so good. Just wait another 20 years 'til you're my age and things become a blur (most of the time at least).

discodisk - nice to see that there are other Will Downing Fans out there. Thankfully he made other things than A Love Supreme.
There's No Living Without You is a great song. I recently wrote a long article about him for a danish musik library portal. Unfortunatly it's in danish but here's the link any way
    it includes a full discography.

    http://www.musikbibliotek.dk/artikel...?artikelid=811.

Scandinavian members might be able to get something out of it.

Miroslav Vitous is absolutely cult!! His promo only 12" of "New York city" sells for big bucks, if you can find one copy
Will Downing's version of "A love supreme" IS definitely one of the top tracks of the 80s. I have to agree with our finnish archidj

Giovanni: That doesn't surprise me one iota. Why doesn't the UK 12" (which even had a 'B' side) sell for the same money? Does that make the UK copy (or the music on it) less of a cult? I can't see much difference between a release on mega corporation Warner Brothers US and ditto UK; can anyone?

I probably would not be spinning NEW YORK CITY if it didn't have such a cult rep. It does sound good mixed in and out of similar fast tracks, though, and we need to show off and demonstrate our hipness every now and then, do we not? - WINGS OF FIRE is considered a commercial title? Thank god I was notified, I'll program Olivia Newton-John & Travolta's SUMMER NIGHTS or CELEBRATION by Kool & Gang instead:-) !

Like that other classic deepish house PROMISED LAND tune Will Downing LOVE SUPREME is quite timeless and works real nice today doesn't it? The "Jazz In The House" mix is lovely though I always seem to spin the standard side A version due to the wonderful vocals. Some of the ladies around these days sing alright but there's a shortage of good men. Instead of Eminem we need more acts like Will who can really sing as opposed to just deliver a tune or croak a crappy rap.

Jussi: Is hipness is in the mind of the beholder or in our own minds? Wow, that's a heavy thought!
No disrespect intended, but IMO a heavy bass, with heavy percussion and JUST nonsensical meanderings, trying to dig a tune out of it all does not a great track make. Surely that's the problem with too many modern tracks? They just just rumble along aimlessly, as does New York City to a large degree. They're basically just jamming along with no direction whatsoever. Hence my comment that it was probably 20 years ahead of its time. No big deal!! :)
Yes, it was great to mix in and out of similar tracks, even though it stood up less well in its own right.
George Kraanz - Din Daa Daa - (sped up +6) - Dinosaur L - Go Bang (+2) - Miroslav Vitous - New York City - Pig Bag - Papa's Got A Brand New Pigbag (minus 3) there that's a wacky flying 15 minutes. All speeds approximate.

I wish I'd have been in those sleazy clubs DD rather than tucked up in bed! I had to wait 'til the 80's for that!! You can rely on moi not to say anything about cobridge DD, except that the hookers there are very high class & not at all down-market!

When music is in question Hipness is in the comments of 19 yrs olds in Evisu jeans. If they come foward testing you, wanting to hear New york City, you spin it, right?

Jussi: "19 year old asking for New York City.....you'd play it, right?": Isn't that like being their slave. I thought you'd be more like their master and they'd be your slaves! :) Or are you both fashion victims caught up in some weird symbiotic relationship?
You don't like George Kraanz eh? Oh well, I can understand anyone not liking it. It was a love it/hate it type of record and to be honest, I played it more than I should have. Funny thing is, the manager who used to give me lotsa grief about being too uncommercial really got off to that disc, once I'd weedled it into his subconscious. It was a great record for lighting engineers 'cos of its percussive drama.

Well, Quinny, I don't really adore the fashion statements of my junior socialites, not being a slave to hip hop fashion, or anything else for that matter with the possible exeption of gargo pants. But if you ring up Tommy Hilfiger - tell him JK sends hugs - he'll dig something out for you. You'll have to pay couture prices of course so be prepared to shell out some clams.

I do kinda like the George Krantz record actually but have reservations about speeding anything up that much. Doing that I have bombed terribly, not too long ago. The record I pitched too much came to an end before I could cue into anything. There I was with all eyes on me, at complete loss. The humiliation was unbearable.

I think we're talking about collectors' craze!
As a matter of fact, the US pressing is the original issue of that track and collectors haunt for it.
By the way, that Vitous track is an absolute cult and even UK pressings are valuable.
Disco collectors are crazy people: in the USA they search for Euro pressings of 12s, because they almost always have picture covers. In Europe we search for US pressings with generic company sleeves.
    That's it!!

Blinkin' 'eck Jussi, that must have been a short record!!!
I understand where you're coming from. 6% up on a 6 minute track makes a difference of 21 seconds or so to the overall length. Did you ever read the post about the DJ friend of mine who actually fell asleep between records (3 minute, 7" records at that). You think you felt humiliated?

A bit of a surprise to see someone from Jersey hailing from Cobridge!

I used to live in Hanley for a while, intrigued about sleazy clubs there - tell me where, see if I remember

I am not sure about Jersey or Manchester but this forum seems to be. I didn't know you were from Stoke too. You landed up in Manchester too. I suppose Ruby and the Club is too dull for most people.

Toto, I actually think Ruby's club (I used to go there in the late 80's/early 90's when Bob & Ray owned it & saw all sorts from Hazell Dean to Lily Savage-happy days) is quite a good club; it's just a pity that the gay population of Staffordshire dont support it more. I mainly moved to Manchester for employment reasons & to move in with my partner of 8 years; I dont think the gay village here is all its cracked up to be; too many screaming queens with attitude & money-grabbing bar/ club owners for my liking! (sorry to be so negative- it does have some good things going for it.)

Discodisk, my uncle wouldn't be at all surprised about anything you tell him about me I bet. Believe me, he's had a more outrageous past then me (it runs in the family!) :D
