Ashley: Hasn't Juno had these charts for some time? If not, it may be a sign of the times and their way of generating sales in a sluggish market.

Not to put a screwdriver in the works, but I hardly feel this is like 1977 all over again. For a start, all the releases then were 100% new (albeit some were re-workings of old tunes), there was a (soon to be huge) growing market for the product and the dance scene was positively on the way up. Today, it's almost dead in the water (compared to where it was a few years back). Can't say I'm a great fan of re-edits, although the odd one works. Many are just looped segments, ad infinitum.......I guess it's the best they can do, as they don't have access to original multitracks.

Possibly of more significance IMO is the fact that more and more chart singles (in the UK...can't speak for the USA and elsewhere) are adopting a more swinging, rock 'n' roll type of back beat and people are finding these records catchy and making 'em BIG hits. Things like Rehab and Mercy have blazed a trail that is really picking up momentum right now.

Now, that's what I call Retro.

.. hello Quinny .. Juno are selling sufficient quantities of disco tunes to enable a weekly 12" disco chart .. I agree not every re-edit is good .. but then not every disco tune made 30 years ago was worth buying either .. the new Rahaan 12" EP is a collection of genuine remixes (not simply edits) .. and the Two Man Sound re-edit (at least to these ears) is a big improvement on the original, complete with extended jazz breaks .. the massive proto-disco club smash "Blind" by Hercules & Love Affair has been topping this chart for weeks, which would suggest the Juno disco chart is an actual reflection of units sold (rather than just a cynical attempt to convince us new disco has an audience) ..

Donna Summer is at the number 1 position on the Billboard Dance charts this week with I'm A Fire.

Joining her in the top 10 is Shirley Bassey and Jeanie Tracy, two other former disco/Hi-NRG acts.

Recent top ten BB dance chart toppers include Kristine W's version of Diana Ross' The Boss, and the remixes of Karen Young's Hot Shot.

Candi Staton is in the top 25.

So maybe it's closer to 1977 than you think.

I think calling Shirley Bassey a disco artist is a bit of a stretch. The *vast* majority of her work is "adult contemporary" or whatever term they're using now. We don't call the Rolling Stones a disco-funk group because they did "Miss You", do we?

I agree with that 100%. And I am a lover of standards, not to mention James Bond themes, my favorite being Moonraker, also sung by her and very disco-ish (Moonraker, End Title).

But she has had a couple of disco records, a recent CD of mixes of her "more famous" work, is held in esteem by some DJ's, fans and drag queens of that era, and is currently back on the dance charts approximately 30 years later.

I think it is relevant to say she has a disco/dance audience. And there is nothing wrong with having a mixed audience base. More power to her.

This is a great topic Ashley-one that is near and dear to me.A good edit will bring attention to the track we already love-a great edit will make you fall in love all over again.Danny Krivit,Dimitri,Joey Negro are all well
known and reliable-but please seek out our very own Greg Wilson's Credit to the Edit series and
Stephen Freeman's Hot Track's(and other) work.And Lary Sanders monthly "Sandpiper" series has amazing
hard to find edits.This month he took Jeanne Burton's
45 of "Nobody Loves Me Like You Do" mixing the A vocal
with the B instrumental into what only can be described
as a 12" mix that was never released.And he did the same thing with the Trammps "Rubber Band".
And I have been a huge fan of Rahaan for awhile now.I
first discovered a small clip of him mixing at an underground club where he caused pandemonium mixing
out of Made In The USA "Never Let Go" into Mach's "On
and On"(posted on this very site!).I then searched ot a few of his mixes online-he
does an amazing job of making the old sound new.For me,the pleasure was being re-introduced to things
like Hott City's "Ain't Love Grand"(which I'd long ago
got rid of) and helped me discover the 12" instrumental
of Bunny Sigler and Barbara Mason's "Locked in this Position".And who would ever think to overlay the Sensuous Black Woman over "War Dance"?

This can work both ways ....god bless the child ..... but really who gives a hoot if the young ones ever rediscover disco ... as if they could actually do so fully .

I know I harp on about my radio show, but the feedback I get from 'conteporary' DJ's is quite staggering really (and I don't think I'm any good!) Basically they listen, producers and remixers listen and woe betide me if I don't mention the name of the track, the artist, the label and the year it was released! The MSN and text messaging goes crazy!!
There is a very definite demand for music like this to be aired - and I am not surprised Juno are doing a disco chart (proto or otherwise) as its appeal is growing. It remains underground, but those that get it are the ones you know really appreciated your 'work'.
