I've already got Salsoul Classics 1&2 and 3&4, but there are tons more on the Charly, Suss'd and Salsoul/Bethlehem labels, not to mention the Mastercuts series.
Which are the essentials, in terms of sound quality and selection?

I'd say buy individual albums and compilations by the major artists like First Choice, Skyy, Loleatta Holloway, Moment of Truth, Logg, Love Committee, Eddie Holman, Instant Funk, Bunny Sigler, Aurra, Double Exposure, Inner Life, Salsoul Orchestra, ect. When you got to their secondary roster (those artists who didn't have individual albums or CDs), there was a huge drop-off in quality to my ears anyways. Their were UK double disc Anthologies issued on many of the major artists which cover their albums nicely.
As for compilations, volumes 3 and 4 of Salsoul Classics dipped heavily in quality although their were some decent tracks. If you're looking for some rarities and longer mixes get Salsoul 12" Gold Master Series Volumes 1-3 issued in the mid 90's. One obscure artist, Surface, is featured on all 3 volumes. They are the same group that had R&B radio hits like "Happy" later during their stint at Columbia.
The best companions to the previously recommended Salsoul presents disco divas and soulful sista flavas is

Be careful with releases by suss'd!!!
They often use mp3s for their cds :-(
For example "First Choice - The Anthology" or "Deep Disco Culture Vol. 1".
Moment Of Truth is someone I really want to get a comprehensive discography for. It's kinda odd that two of the three songs I have on compilations are instrumental versions. They are marvelous, but so are the original versions.
Did suss'd ever do an anthology on them? What are the best released on cd to get by them? Is it only my pc that doesn't show their page on this site correctly, with the stupid banner on the left side of the screen covering most of the stuff written about them?
Moment of Truth's lone 1978 self-entitled album was reissued on CD in 1995 and again in 2003 with the same details. It was rather tough to find but when it was reissued in 2003 Tower had it instock and it was always high on my wants list. The company created a second reissue because stores decided not to carry backcatalog after the downturn in cd sales in the late 90's.
Here's the track listing and a link to allmusic's page.
