    Richie Rome productions

I love this man's work aith such as Flower, Ritchie Family, Jones Girls etc. I've seen an LP that I'm not familiar with called 'Darcus' that Richie produced in '77 & was wondering if anyone here has an opinion on it? (a track from it is on the Disco Cocktail/Dimitri from Paris CD comp. BTW). Also the man himself released an LP in '80 called 'Deep' - any opinions on that too please?

Thanx for the info BJ. Just listened to samples of 'Deep' by Richie R.(Natural High 3 CD) & 'Got To Be Love' by Darcus (Disco Cocktail CD) & I really like them both but it's what you'd expect from the man who gave us 'Givin' It Back' (Phil Hurtt) & 'Disco Dancing' (Stanley Turrentine). Also noticed that the Deep LP contains Richie's version of 'Claire de Lune' which is my favourite ever classical tune. What a guy!:icon_razz:

Flower is alright. It's a '79 that kind of sounded a little too sanitized for my tastes. I have the Darcus LP, which has a shorter 4 minute version of 'Its Got To Be Love',which still sounds great. The overall album didn't stick with me, though. It was also a West Coast production, if I'm not mistaken, so it doesn't have that philly touch I was looking for.

Other Richie Rome productions to check out:

Chi-Lites - Fantastic Chi-Lites (I think that's the name of the LP. The track 'My First Mistake' was on there)
Jimmy Ruffin - Falling In Love With You
Jay & The Techniques - Number Onederful - This is a Jerry Ross production, but I think Rome had a hand in the production because it sounds like his stuff, with the show-tuney strings and background vocals by the Ritchie Family ladies.

I often wonder whather Richie Rome's lush , lilting songs/productions influenced Juliano Salerni who masterminded stuff like Ultimate, Strange Affair, Hi Gloss & Bonnie Boyer as my ears spot certain similarities in sounds. I'd love to ask him if Dayna ever interviewed him!

I absolutely love Darcus' lp, especially the track "Exactly how i feel" :icon_biggrin:. Great production. "It's got to be love" 12" is disappointing, no new breaks or vocals ...
You can clearly recognise Richie's touch on Billy Jackson and the citizens' band which he arranged (1976 on RCA also).

A non-Philly Richie Rome production (I think it was recorded in LA), it's a track that I've been playing over and over a lot lately:

I also love this track by Stanley Turrentine, featuring the late 70s Philly MFSB rhythm section (eg Quentin Joseph on drums):
