When Motown legend, Eddie Kendricks, paired up with one of New York's more creative independent producers, Patrick Adams, for an album project in 1979 ......
How'd it turn out???
SOMETHING MORE
Eddie Kendricks
A1 Pleasure Man
A2 I Just Want To Be The One In Your Life
A3 Your Love Has Been Good To Me
B1 I Never Used To Dance Arranged By - Leroy Burgess
B2 I Can't Let You Walk Away
B3 Something More
B4 No Wonder (I Can't Get Over You)
Since nothing ever gets mentioned about it and perhaps not a 12" was released from this outing (?) ..... should I suppose not so good?? :icon_sad: :icon_rolleyes:
I just bought this LP , but before I give it a debut listen ...
... I'd be most interested in what anyone in advance can tell me to expect of it !!!:icon_confused::icon_question:
This will be BTW , Eddie's last solo LP ......

The reviewer from allmusic.com doesn't think you should have very high expectations:
"Whoever's idea it was to depict Eddie Kendricks wearing an oversized orange sweater, baggy pants and dull brown brogan loafers on the cover, should have been fired. The cover surely didn't inspire sales, and like a dirty car seems to ride badly, a drab album cover makes the music inside sound bad. Most of the songs are bland and unmemorable. A decent cut, a remake of "I Just Want to Be the One in Your Life," wouldn't have made the cut on previous Kendricks albums. The up-tempo, disco oriented "I Never Used to Dance," lacks the beat and rhythms that enhanced his Motown recordings. A big problem here is that the producers don't require Kendricks to reach for notes like Motown did, and his vocals sound lazy and uninspiring. "Pleasure Man" is simply dull, as is the title cut. I couldn't, with a straight face, recommend this to even diehard Eddie Kendricks fans."
But hey, if you can boogie down to it, then that's all that matters right?
This one's goin' up in smoke I guess :icon_sad:
Haven't yet heard the music inside .... but do agree with the comments about this lackadaisical cover ...
The orange sweater's not the only thing that seems over sized .... Never noticed before what BIG hands Eddie had ... as featured here ..... :icon_mrgreen:

Some of those tracks were on Eddie Razor & Tie CD Vintage '78. Here are some soundclips. "Something more" appears to be the best of the 6 here.

What are your thoughts on this Patrick Adams produced Lp ?
Did you forget to come back to answer because it was that ordinary ?

It has now been awhile since I listened .... but suffice it to say the LP then got relegated to a less accessible part of my collection. Sad that this becomes Eddie's conclusive disco effort considering how well his music was received in the discos ... from the earliest onset on (I would crown Eddie disco's premier solo male artist ).
My disappointment in the project prompted this thread:
WHEN GIANTS TAKE ON GIANTS YOU GET : ---- DUDS???
But if you aren't already familiar with the LP , here's a cut now on youtube Afroboy:

I'd be curious as to what you think !! ???
Please wait

Nope. Nope. Nope.
Eddie Kendricks- I've Got My Eyes On You (Ms. Dixie/ MD-50001) 1983
Featuring the very interesting teaming on production and performance: The SOS BAND (~!!) and Tommy Stewart.
To make this personal, I co-produced (with Mike Ragogna) that Razor & Tie Kendricks package years ago.
I just produced a new various artists Tommy Stewart CD- without any of the Kendricks tracks because we could not find the rights holders.
Just like the Arista sessions, Eddies voice is shot. He's still Eddie. Just not the Eddie you remembered. "He may not be as good as he once was- but ONCE he can be good as he ever was". And on this album....you got that once....
Remicks...I count on YOU to keep facts and things straight~!! Dont change up on me~!!

This is what makes the effort of creating threads here gratifying :icon_cool: ...... people build on them ...... they react , add info ,elaborate, correct, enlighten and overall broaden the learning experience .
Well, I'll so my best .... but then I always do my best to post things as factually as I understand them to be ....but ol' remicks is only human so I do make mistakes and therefore I count on YOU and anyone else to fill in the gaps ... I welcome it !Remicks...I count on YOU to keep facts and things straight~!! Dont change up on me~!!
Because indeed ... somehow I was under the impression that Eddie finished out his solo recordings on Arista ....but nope nope nope .... he signed on to Atlantic it seems in the 80's and put out at least two albums:
I'VE GOT MY EYES ON YOU as you mention Donald
as well as one before that in 1981 :
I LOVE learning about stuff like this and this is what makes sharing info on these discussion boards so rewarding.
Would like to learn even more about the music created by Kendricks in that later period ...anyone??
Sorry for my incorrect assertion Donald . I'll work harder at fact checking.
And to further the goal of peace and harmony in the valley of disco I think by increasing my usage of clarifiers like AFAIK and IMO would be of benefit too ...
just to CMA better .

STOP IT~!! You are SUPERhuman. People like YOU and Stephen and markydefad and discofunk (I can go on & on here so I wont) get so much RIGHT- that I am SHOCKED when you get something wrong. And I dont even wanna use the term wrong. Lets just say "less right".
I started on this site silent and eager to learn and humbled by how much I did not know- still do not know. I still feel awkward about chiming in from time to time because- what could I possibly say that you great gals n' guys have not said already?
Eddie was coasting on his reputaion and charm in his later days. He built up a great deal of goodwill over the years, and "The Thin Man" was STILL after all was said and done.......EDDIE KENDRICKS (even if he later decided to drop the "S" from his name). Even if the high notes were not as high or the smooth tone not as smooth. Dammit......this was EDDIE KENDRICKS.
At a time when name and reputation actually MEANT something- a Man like Eddie could get signed. Now, were the labels up to giving him what he needed? Atlantic? NOPE NOPE NOPE. Arista? NOPE NOPE NOPE. RCA? (in partnership with David Ruffin (87) the answer was a resounding YES....but timing perhaps was not on their side as they were seen as a vintage act at a time when "vintage" was not a good or "cool" thing to be. But the Hall & Oates thing did work (85)....just as that every generation alive Temptations "REUNION" (82) Just for the cover alone that lp was worth it- had worked.)
I like the song even though Kendricks seems to be rather far back in the mix. But you know, if I, like Kendricks, had been a part of Motown during the label's heydey, I think I would have given literally ANYTHING to continue to have access to those unbelievable Smokey, Norman Whitfield and Holland Dozier Holland songs! Heck, I would have PAID for them!

thanks Donald . your kindness made my day !! :icon_biggrin:

But SHEESH !!! I sure hope my postings don't in any way inhibit anyone else from choosing to post comments here. :icon_eek: :icon_eek: :icon_eek: :icon_eek: :icon_eek:
That'd be beyond criminal !!
