Question Love Hangover: How Many Times?

On a personal basis: way too many!!!! But...how many covers of this timeless jewel were released during the years?

Of course the original by Miss Ross:

Re: Love Hangover: How Many Times?

Personally, I have covers of "Love Hangover" by

    1) The Player's Association (70s jazz-funk version)
    2) The Associates (80s New Wave version)
    3) Pauline Henry (90s House version)

Of course, there was that elusive, to me at least, 5th Dimension version which attempted to compete with Diana's version; AMG also lists versions by Tina Arena & Yazz & Ralph Tresvant & Stanley Turrentine!

The Ralph Tresvant recording is a different song, one he co-wrote (OK, I cheated and did a search on the ASCAP database!). :icon_lol:

Diana Ross' version had the Disconet remix, plus a bootleg that was around 10", on JVS.

I also found this, but haven't heard it:

I've also found this alternate Diana version. I haven't heard that one many times but it's very interesting:

    In fact, it's very GOOD!

Ah yes VS .....the famous, maddeningly elusive OTHER version !!! (love it!)

First of all does this song have the most sexy guitar work of any and all disco songs??? :icon_mrgreen:

The reason told that Diana nixed this version was the too participatory input of the female back-up singers ... making the song seem too SUPREMEY

    ....heaven forbid :icon_razz:...

The Fifth Dimension recorded it before Diana Ross.

There's also a PWL remix of Diana Ross' "Love Hangover" which has an 80's house sound.

There's also a version by Tracy Ackerman from 86 or 87. It's pretty faithful, nothing out of the ordinary.

uh, I don't think so...Ross recorded it first, Pam Sawyer & Marilyn McLeod were Motown staff writers... it was released as an LP cut, discos started playing it, a 2nd single from the LP was released, 5th Dimension covered "LH" and released a single, Motown, not wanting to get left in the dust, hurriedly rushed Diana's single of "Love Hangover" to compete...both charted the same week on Billboard...then Diana left 5th D in the dust.....

Fred Bronson; Billboard Book of Number One Hits:
“she [Miss Ross] rebounded with a number one single [“Mahogany”]…for a follow-up, Motown went with another ballad “I Thought It Took a Little Time (But Today I Fell in Love).” The first single from the DIANA ROSS LP, it was moving slowly up the chart when people began to take notice of another track on the album, “Love Hangover.”

Among those taking notice were the Fifth Dimension, who had reorganized since the departure of Marilyn McCoo and Billy Davis, Jr. Signed to ABC Records, the Dimension released a single of “Love Hangover.”

Motown reacted quickly by rushing out Diana’s single. Both versions entered the Hot 100 on April 3, 1976; Diana debuted at 78 and the Fifth Dimension came in at 95. Three weeks later the Fifth Dimension had peaked at number 80.”

Ross , of course went to #1 POP & #1 Soul and #1 Disco on Record World...Billboard had it #1 on several of it's charts (LA, Melody Song Shops)...but in the Disco Compilation Consensus of those charts [combining all the charts into one consensus chart] it was #1 for 4 weeks against very stiff competition from the Andrea True Connection, Donna Summer, Vicki Sue Robinson & The Trammps, each vying for the top spot with classic records!!!

    AMG on "LOVE HANGOVER"

Setting the mood during a recording session is important because that "vibe" is what will come across on the finished record. Recording for Diana Ross' "Love Hangover" was done at two in the morning with Ross passing out shots of Remy Martin. Just like with the Jackson 5's "Never Can Say Goodbye," producer Hal Davis overheard a demo of the Pam Sawyer / Marilyn McLeod song while at the Los Angeles offices of Motown Records. The musicians he used on the session included some of the same ones he would use on Thelma Houston's 1977 R&B/ pop chart-topping cover of "Don't Leave Me This Way": drummer James Gadson, bassist Henry Davis, guitarist Art Wright, and Crusaders pianist Joe Sample. Davis found some resistance from some of the musicians (who didn't like the change from a cool, languid groove into a brisk disco workout) and Ross herself who thought that she was "above" doing disco. The intervention of Motown founder Berry Gordy set the stage for Ross having her biggest hit since "Ain't No Mountain High Enough." To bring the right mood even more to the fore, Davis instructed engineer Russ Terrana (who would later remix Ross' Chic-produced hits "Upside Down" and "I'm Coming Out" from her platinum Diana LP) to install a strobe light so that Ross could be in the " disco" mindset. It did the trick with "Love Hangover" going to number one R&B and number one pop for two weeks in spring 1976. The 5th Dimension lost the cover battle with their version issued as an ABC single peaking at number 39 R&B and number 80 pop around the same time. Ross' "Love Hangover" enjoyed many remixes over the years including one by Frankie Knuckles found on Diana Extended: The Remixes.

Yes and I think it was on that VH-1 Disco documentary countdown on the "100 Greatest Dance Tunes" or whatever it was called; when they got to "Love Hangover," they mentioned the duelling versions by Miss Ross and the 5th Dimension and I think they dropped a 3rd version as having been recorded by Sylvester.....if I remember correctly. I know I heard it somewhere and I did a double take. Wut???? :icon_eek:

If it is true, I wonder why it has never surfaced....also, having lived in SF at the time when Sylvester performed at every street festival, seemingly on a weekly basis....why did I never hear him do it in his show???? :icon_question:

That said, I can't say for sure....but if he did, I would sure love to hear it.

Stephen, that is an interesting rumour and one as a huge Sylvester fan would fine extremely interesting to hear. I've often wondered if there was ever any material he recorded that has never been released.

Just saw this. Sorry for the late response.

Actually, yes. There are 3-5 tracks that were never released, that David Diebold told me about. From, I believe, the Warner Bros. LP sessions. Although a couple of them ended-up on the "Immortal" LP.

Syl's last "new" 12" release was "I'm Not Ready" b/w "Menergy". David Diebold did the "House" mixes for the "Immortal" release, and brought me in to do the extended versions. But, the original of "I'm Not Ready", sounds like "Sex" and "Take Me To Heaven".(standard Megatone, Hi-NRG stuff) I've never heard the original version (and probably would've liked it better), but I was happy with the "House" treatment. And grateful to have mixed his last 12". One of the last Megatone 12"s, actually. Before David passed away, and John sold the label.

I bought an extended repress of this, and I think it was being passed off as if Diana Ross was singing it. It sounded very much like her, but it wasn't. I think after hearing the song 4256 times I would definetly know! Also, I think napster is selling songs that are not by the original artist too---I would call it fraud. My friend bought You Sexy Thing by Hot Chocolate, and he wasn't happy when I told him it wasn't by the original artist.

Can you upload a thumbnail, or scan of the label?
