Re: Need song name and artist from early 70's disco

Thank you so much. This was driving me crazy. I did a search and found them but I can't seem to find the song anywhere to listen to or download "buy".
Can anyone provide some help here?

This is such a great resource. I am looking for other songs played at the disco's from the same time. If you can toss me some names and artists I would appreciate it. I have Barrabas "woman" and The Mexican by Babe Ruth and of course Girl you need a change of mind. I still remember the lights and energy!!!

    thanks again

of course, "I Like What I Like" is one I don't have...used to have it in my Napster files...but checking AMG... I found this.... [not sure if it's still available, but it appears a cd was released in 2002 and it had a LONG version of the song...I have seen the reissued LP...but I didn't know the timing...so I didn't buy it...there was a short version and then there was a longer version with a long drum solo intro...the latter was the one people wanted...I had that in my Napster files...but they are all lost now.].. good luck!!!

DO NOT BUY THIS CD IF..., September 24, 2004
By Michael Sean (Amherst, NY) - See all my reviews
...you are like me and wanted the "I Like What I Like" cut. When I wrote my pervious review you could preview the tracks. The track that I previewed on the site was the original track from the original album.

The CD I received DID NOT have the original "I like what I like" track even though that's what the web site had in the preview. It had a very lame and shortened version without all the orchestration from the original album track.

The impression that you get is that the group found themselves running out of money and decided to rerecord this piece of garbage.

It's interesting that Amazon no longer allows you to preview the tracks on the CD. False advertising?

It's too bad there's no choice for zero stars.

Solid funk album., November 17, 2000

This is a little known band from Canada in the early '70s. They were on the same label with Kool and the Gang, and in fact they cover 'Who's Gonna Take The Weight' on this album. Otherwise this CD is pretty much in the vein of the Kool and the Gang recordings of the same era (Live at the Sex Machine, Live at PJs), with a somewhat shabbier musicianship. Don't let this scare you away though, they still rock hard, with some great grooves and some b3 lurking in the background on nearly every song.Highlights: 'Funky Granny', 'Funky Gene-ra-tion' and the instrumental 'Mama Said-Papa Said (Too Young To Marry)'.

The cut "I Like What I Like" is worth the price of the CD in my opinion. We used to dance to this at "The Bakery" in Niagara Falls NY way back in my youth and I bought it again just to bring back the memories.

I'm like Woodward/Bernstein...tracking down the facts!!

    found this info on GEMM:

The Original "Everyday People" from Canada!! Their album has been professionally remastered to CD in 2004, featuring the hit song " I Like What I Like" plus extra tracks that were not on the original vinyl release (15 songs total)!! The album was originally released in 1970 on Paramount records in the USA, and GRT in Canada. The CD was remastered by "Bruce Wheaton", the singer, songwriter, guitarist and founder of the band.

I have been having success on tracking down a bunch of great songs from the day. I used to dance to "I like what I like" at Pegasus and Kontiki in New York.
The album at Amazon which is also on Ebay shows a black group as "Everyday People" But Bruce Wheaton and the original group is white.
    Everyday People

I have tried all over with no luck so far.

Thanks for all your help. You were the first to recognize the song.

Re: Need song name and artist from early 70's disco

hmmmm....now that is interesting....I assumed the group was Black also...and the LP cover shows Black guys on it...so is Bruce Wheaton a white guy??? I'm confused...how could there be two Everyday People groups who both had a hit with "I Like What I Like" --one group being white guys from Toronto and the other being Black guys on the LP cover?????

Re: Need song name and artist from early 70's disco

Unless there were two Everyday People groups and the databases are mixing up their credits? IMDB has been known to do that. Two actors with the same name sometimes get their credits mixed...remember when there were two actresses with the name Vanessa Williams; one being the former Miss America who's now on "Ugly Betty" and another one who was a regular on "Melrose Place."....whatever happened to the latter one I wonder? :icon_eek:

Also, IMDB mixed up the credits of two Marilyn Coopers...one was an actress in the Forties & married to actor Sabu and the mother of Paul Sabu and the other was a NY based musical comedy character actress who was in "West Side Story" and "Woman Of The Year"....but their credits were merged together!!! :icon_confused:

Maybe the Canadian Everyday People is being credited with "I Like What I Like" and it was actually another Black group with the same name??? I'm just askin'????????? :icon_eek::icon_exclaim:

Thanks Barry...the article says the Canadian white-guy group did the tune in demand ...but who are the Black guys on the cover of that LP???? :icon_eek::icon_question:

I'm still confused. If I ordered the cd from Amazon, would I be getting the original mix of the tune ?? Part 1 & 2 of the single merged together???

the one on amazon is by a different group.

if you scan down the page i just gave you

    http://www.chebucto.ns.ca/~bwheaton/

you'll find the right group with the right album and the right song.

see? there's even an email link to inquire how to buy the album, presumably from Bruce Wheaton himself. i've not done it, but i can verify WITH ABSOLUTE CERTAINLY that THIS is the song fokneel is looking for.

i was playing it on RadioioDisco from a CD-R i had made of the original album — OF COURSE!

Re: Need song name and artist from early 70's disco

    ******

This is a delicious record and I just happened to have my 45 handy .:icon_biggrin:

The "A" side is part one and the "B" side is part two and the two are so different you almost have to review them separately ....

    I LIKE WHAT I LIKE PART I
    (B. Wheaton)
    2:24

Part One is instrumental and MUCH more tribal. A repeatedly growling guitar is overlaid with rapid drumming ( think of the cartoon "George of The Jungle's" Theme) with scattered yelping and imitated jungle bird calls.

Tambourine * wood block * wood sticks * scratching guitar * bass guitar * bongos
    Intro: Instruments each join in
    Ending: fades

With the animal imitations and jungle calls and the party atmosphere and its pervasive low growl guitar , it makes me think of Jimmy Castor's TROGLODYTE with just a bit of a Disco Tex & The Sex-o-lettes romp included ( hows that for a combo !)

I LIKE WHAT I LIKE PART II
    (B.Wheaton)
    2:25

.....contains the line I like what I like

in fact the crux of the song is :

    Because I like : --- what I like !
    Yes I like: --- what I like !
    Yes I like: -- what I like !
    because I like iiiiiiiiiiit .

    ------------------ (males/females... they sound jingly white ... (?) )

    Guitars * Organ * Drum --- period.

The whole thing has a commercial jingle feel to it ....why TAB or Mountain Dew didn't pick this up back in day ..... maybe they did ??

    Total fun .
    Ends cold

Both sides a lot of fun . Seems like the A and B sides have been reversed since Part II winds up being the half that sings the title and Part I is all instrumental .....

    Paramount 45
    Produced by
    Steve Kennedy

This record , I like it because .... well ....because, I like It !! :icon_mrgreen:

    Barry, Marky, Remicks
    Thanks for all the information.

Remicks, your narrative of the song is right on. Very vivid. I can see it!.

I emailed Bruce Wheaton for info on how to get the track. I would need a CD or mp3.

If anyone hears where else I can purchase one please let me know. :icon_question: This group (Everyday People) is so rare. There are only two or three sites that even mention them.:icon_surprised:

I think I tracked down just about all the "jungle" beat music of 72' 73'. :icon_cool::icon_biggrin:

who are these guys and are they singing the same "I Like What I Like" that the other Everyday People did??? I saw this LP [ only reissued sealed copies that didn't have song timings on the back!] at Amoeba and always assumed this was the group that did the underground classic...but apparently that group was comprised of white guys from Canada...so who are these black guys that were on the same label as Kool & The Gang???? :icon_eek::icon_question::icon_exclaim: Is it the same old song??? And how could that happen...two groups with the same name doing a song with the same title in the same time period?????

NOt sure who these guys are. I was somewhat confused :icon_confused:until I read the write ups on the original song which was playing at the disco's and was played by Bruce Wheaton and the Everyday People. There is no mention of the black group doing disco music. :icon_mad:

BTW I have not heard back yet from Bruce. If anyone can tell me where else to get the cd or buy the download please help.

The White Boys from Canada (Everyday People) are definitely the ones that had the hit "I Like What I Like". I remember the album cover and also I remember a DJ, who had the album, saying that the group playing the song was white and that they were connected somehow to Sly Stone.

I browsed the Bruce Wheaton site and once I saw the album cover it brought back a lot of memories. It's funny the things that stick out in your mind.

Hi folks, It's Bruce Wheaton here! I'm the guy that wrote the song "I Like What I Like" and I am the guitar player, and founder of the original "Everyday People" from Canada who recorded and released the song "I Like What I Like" (A bunch of white guys and a girl from Canada). In the 70s when we released our album on "GRT" in Canada and "Paramount Records USA", there was this other band called "Everyday People" from somewhere in the USA. I owned and registered the name "Everyday People" officially before we ever released our album. Our lawyers contacted this band and told them to stop using our name, but the band ignored us. And the only way we could have stopped them from using the name was spend a bunch of money that we didn't have on court costs etc. But to make matters worse, in the 90s this band recorded my song "I Like What I Like" and released a CD by the same name. Incredible really, their version of the song is terrible and an obvious attempt to steal the identity of my original band "Everyday People". Also to add to this crazy store, it was a record company in Montreal Canada (our home country) that released the CD. I would appreciate all of the fans of our band to somehow expose these phony copy cats and help point out just how sleazy this whole thing is. Apparently one of the guys in this band played with "Kool and The Gang". You wouldn't think that somebody with that kind of history would stoop to such a low thing. I really would appreciate any body that reads this, that has any ideas how we can put a stop to this band from further tarnishing my original bands reputation!

It would be nice if the fans of my group the original "Everyday People" would sign the guestbook on my website! Please check below for the website link!

    Thank You,
