What Disco.."Club" evokes the most beloved memories for you ?

WE all have that ONE special club that we walked into for the first time .
That club that we walked into and were awe struck and instantly felt a kinship and a magical bond with it's ambiance.
That night you remember who you were with ,what songs played, what you had to drink"or other party favors".What man or woman caught your eye first, who you flirted with etc..
Myself, it would have to be The Copa in Fort Lauderdale florida..With it's ahead of it's time sound system, light show..and beautiful wooden dance floor.
The Decor of white palm trees throughout the main area ,Neon and glass block walls..Sunken area's with carpeted circular and square seating arrangements softened with large colorful pillows thrown over almost every inch..Mirrored blocks as tables that caught the lights in a most delightful way.
That was the main room..as you traveled through you saw a few different doorways..
One would lead you to a western type bar that had porno movies showing at all times.."I didn't care for that room"...But the decor was dead on for what it was representing.
another door would lead you to the patio bar..Lovely with it's lush tropical plants, real palm trees white stoned walkways and 2 bars ..one large with live entertainment at times and one more intimate seating only about 20 people. The patio encircled about half the club and the club was BIG..You could go outside and go from point A to point B without all the disco dollies posing and grabbing at you if you wanted a more subtle mode of travel:icon_cool:
..ALL the bartenders were GORGEOUS as were most of the patrons..
I loved it so much I moved to Lauderdale and worked there..

Great idea of a post topic Dayna. Hard one for me though to pin it down to just one particular place as several places stand out for me.

One place that comes to mind for me was the time I went to the Trocadero Transfer in San Francisco (this would be around Fall 1983). I was just so amazed by the place, the lighting, the size - it was about 3 times the size of the clubs I was use to going to in Canada - the music and the men. I loved it there. I had a such an enjoyable time and got to dance with some of the most gorgeous men in the world. No attitude, no games, they just came up to you and danced with you if they wanted to. I remember several guys on the dance floor fan dancing as I called it, twirling their fans in intriquate motions, etc. No one in the clubs I went to in Canada did this. I was so fascinated by these guys - the looked as if they'd practiced for hours on end to get such a perfect display on the dance floor. It was a whole new experience for me as it was so different from where I was from. Good times, good memories and one I've never forgotten.

    Dayna,
Been to alot of Discos but mine was at the OP (OLD PLANTATION). It was at the height of the Disco Sound and I just remember going to the bathroom and guys and gals were in there with no doors on the stalls and no one seem to care. As you can imagine my jaw just dropped. Just remembering someone having a whistle on them and it was heard over the loud music. My very first drink ever was a whiskey sour (Yuk, my friends said i would love it) and dancing to "Hot Number" by Foxy for the very 1st time. Ahhhh the memories............

There were a few Dayna but my first pick would be There But For The Grace Of God. The lead singer from Machine asked me to dance. Of course I did. In fact I was filled with nervous excitement. I tell ya, it swelled my ego to know that she came and asked me to dance. Even if it was charity work for her :icon_lol: it did a world of good for me. It happened at a Boston disco named KIX and I rode that ego booster throughout the entire disco period

I was there a couple of times (long after the disco era) and I don't recall the decor being that beautiful. Did it change in recent years?

This was in 1977-80 I speak of,It opened in 1976 if I am not mistaken..So it was fresh ..All clubs get there share of wear and tear ,Plus sometimes when a club redecorates They might have a different vision which in no way compares to the original..I have no idea when you were in the club but my vision remains as written............Wish you could have been there when I was.

The Copa was remodeled in 1985, and was given a more industrial look. This was at the time Federal Hwy was widened to six lanes, and the Copa had to close the little shop and the Tropical Bar on the west side of the bldg. They expanded in the back, and built a new open air bar on the parking lot side.

Re: What Disco.."Club" evokes the most beloved memories for you ?

I've started playing at a lot of little Joint's around town back home in Essex County, NJ where I grew up. But my first major Club that I played was at the Peppermint Ballroom in Orange, NJ. It had a huge dancefloor downstairs, and a smaller one upstairs for private parties and stuff. The Cheetah Club in Paterson, NJ was another legendary club because they hosted live shows, and the DJ Booth was two stories above the dancefloor that was the size of a gymnasium!!! And it made me feel good to see 500 or more people dancing to my records!!!

But my most Beloved Memory, is when I played Club Zanzibar in Newark, NJ. Zanzibar was the most legendary Club in our area because of DJ's like: Hippie, Dave Morales, Larry Levan, Shep Pettibone, Tee Scott, Tony Humphries, Timmy Regisford, & Naim Johnson, who used to cause earthquakes every weekend that were #10 on the Richter Scale!!!By the time I had got there, Club Zanzibar was just a shell of it's former self. It was ready to be torn down, and the Owners were just letting anybody come in to play, that could play. But it still felt good to spin in the spot where the Legends have stood, and to witness some of the shows that they used to have with performers like: Sylvestor, Carl Bean, Phyllis Hyman, First Choice, Adeva, Love Committee, and so many others.Club Zanzibar has been torn down, and The Newark Bears Baseball Staduim has been put in it's place.

    R.I.P. Club Zanzibar!!!!

I can't remember the name of the Disco, but I was in the Navy when Disco reigned supreme and our ship pulled into Rio De Janeiro Brazil. Me and a few friends were club hopping downtown but near "the gut," that is, the part of town that was run down and had hookers, etc., and we heard the disco version of Grace Jones "I Need a Man" blaring from a club/disco. I'll never forget it, 80% of the song was instrumental and it was blaring from that Disco and the waiting line to get in was long. We got in the line but the guy at the door knew we were United States Sailors on liberty in Rio, so he called us to the front and let us in. This disco had a huge dance floor, a lighting system througout the whole disco, not just over the dance floor, and the section of the lighting system over the dance floor at times would pull down within a couple of feet of the people dancing; it was so glorious and so heavenly. Can't remember the name of the club, but for "back in the day" that Disco was certainly ahead of its time. Our jaws were locked at dropped the whole while we were there but we had a ball.

Hey Garry, you reminded me of Naples, Italy when you mentioned "THE GUT"!!! As we both know, that's where all the fun really was!!! We just had to make sure we didn't get caught by Shore Patrol while hanging out in there!!!

You know it buddy, you know it! Had to head to the gut when liberty call came down. Had to hit all those pubs and bars with the hookers in them, and God knows what else at times, and other hit and miss joints that we didn't want anyone to know we went in (y'all know). Yeah, Naples was one of my favorite.

The most famous & reportedly the flashiest club of the disco heyday in Brazil was Rio De Janeiro's Dancing Days - does this name ring any bells Garry? The place was so famous they had a series of albums out by 1978, with disco tracks big at the time. Also, a hugely popular all-girls group As Freneticas recorded a song dedicated to the club -
YouTube - As Frenéticas - Dancin' Days (1978)

    Check it out!

The song is fab, been spinning it a lot - still can't thank you enough, Mr A of Manchester, you know how much I love it!

What Disco.."Club" evokes the most beloved memories for you ?

I used to hang a lot in disco roller skate rinks, until I discovered at 15 what a real disco club looked and felt like back in '78 at the "Kebekelektrik" disco club in Laval, Quebec. I recall so well all the magic ambiance, people, smoke machine, lights and the awesome sound of the 12" of Edwin Starr's Contact. This was one the only places in the area alcohol free. Maybe I was born 5 years too late.
If you buy this record your life, will be better.
