Actually I have no idea so here's a wild guess:
other than Marvin, i'd say Average White Band & Joe Cocker
AMG lists 254 different versions of the song - pheww
Three different artists have achieved a US R'n'B #1 with "I Heard It Through The Grapevine".
Who were they?
If it moves - funk it!!

Marvin Gaye - that's one!
Two to go - one soul, one disco/funk!!
If it moves - funk it!!
Creedance Clearwater Revival - Disco 12" on Fantasy.
Bernie (Bernard Lopez)
Owner/publisher of DiscoMusic.com - on the web since 1996.

No! That's not one of them!
Not sure where than one got to in the US R'n'B charts ....
If it moves - funk it!!
Gladys Knight and The Pips should be one. They had it out there first. Can't think of the other... but I hope it's not that version by P'zazz. That 12" was, well, let's say "weak".
Love Has No Time or Place
Nicky
The California Raisins?
marvin/gladys .........+ roger troutman ??
Nick Nack - you got it! - Gladys Knight! That's the one I didn't know - though I seem to recall having heard the song!
And, DISCODISC, you were right of course with Roger Troutman - a surprise 3rd US R'n'B #1 for the song in 1981! I knew if you came along you would get the answer right!
I got the 2002 re-release of Roger "The Many Facets Of Roger" on CD for Xmas, and the fact that "Grapevine" made #1 on the US R'n'B chart under 3 different artists, including Roger of course, was mentioned in the sleeve notes!
Congratulations to you both!!
Hmmm, I wonder - were than any other songs that made R'n'B #1 under three different artists?
If it moves - funk it!!
This could be one:Originally Written by jazz_pilgrim
"Dancing in the street" by: Martha & The Vandellas (1966), Van Halen (1982) and Mick Jagger & David Bowie (1985).
But someone should check, this is just a guess and I don't keep record of chart positions.
It don't mean a thing (if ain't got that swing)
I have to say Graham that the California Raisins' version was the definitive version IMO.
...ya gotta beat the street......
