    Motown: The Real Deal?

I saw an interview with author Gerald L. Posner for his new book, "Motown: Money, Power, Sex and Music". Now even though he was patting himself on the back for being the first for telling 'the truth', I just might have to pick this one up.

The interviewer asked him how he mangaged to get at the truth if he interviewed the same people who have been interviewed for the other dozen or so books out there about Motown. His reply: "I went to the court documents." Yeah, baby, this could be real "kiss and tell".

He related one or two stories about (who else?) Diana Ross:

    1) After stating that she was disliked by EVERYONE (except Gordy) at Motown, he told how Marvin Gaye refused to be in the same studio with her to do their duet(s). He was becoming very "Christian" and considered her a slut, she was very pregnant and considered him a smoker and a druggie.

    2) After some type of in-house argument, Diana attempted to run down (yes, I said "run down", WITH HER CAR!) a member of Martha and The Vandellas. Missed her by inches.

The author's comment after the last story: "This is not a very nice woman."  Who knew? --- We did, thank you very much.

The book doesn't just feature 'the dirt' but also Motown's lousy business practices including how, like every other studio, they cheated their artists on royalties. And this was Berry Gordy's "Family Business?" I can't wait! :D

And Marky idolizes her... I wonder if he will go so far as to imitate her behavior... Anyone knows if Marky is taking driving lessons? :)

Well, me for one, when I was 12, 13, 14 or so years old. When you grow up black in white America you want to have and hold on to something that distinguishes you. Something you can be proud of and say, see, nobody had to "give" this to us. Motown was one of those 'things'. It was touted and hailed by all as a Black-owned business; a "family" business, because that's how everyone was supposedly treated. Yeah, we all grow up and reality sets in, but it still hurts when you get smacked in the face :( .

As for that comment I wasn't going to make about Ms. Ross, let me tell you what I told my Dad when I was about 15 and The Supremes were on TV (Ed Sullivan or some-such):

Dad was all bug-eyed, talking about "how fine she was", with her big eyes. Mom was rolling hers  at the TV. I had already seen them live at least twice and now this show. I looked at the old man and said, "You know, she thinks it's all about her. What a... " Yeah, I was smart enough not to finish it or Mom would have had both my eyes and my ass rolling.

IMO: She wasn't all that back then, she definitely ain't all that now.

FYI: Gerald Posner was among those interviewed for yesterday's E! True Hollywood Story on Diana Ross.

I don't despise Miss Ross or her music; actually, quite the contrary. I like a lot of her music. Yes, her personality speaks for itself but that doesn't change my feelings about her music. I can say that for some other artists as well.
