Well, as i've seen there's no thread like this i created it! my intention is to put all those videos together that you consider that have a great disco dance scene! Better if it's uploaded in sites like youtube, but no necessary to show it here if you can't, just explain if you know of the existence of any relevant vid of interesting disco dance you think we should know/watch, and in case you have it and post it here, please! tell which is your favourite part or what inspired you the most of it, who better to comment those videos than you?:icon_rolleyes:
Just post it, even if you think it's OBVIOUS! i don't wanna miss a thing!!! :icon_lol:
I'm refering to any DISCO dance like Hustle, etc...but i'm specially interested in the disco freestyle, you know what i mean?
My only intention is to visually illustrate how those moves were. (of course you can also put some additional info even if it's not about any specific video).
for example, i start with this!:
1. i'm sure everybody know's this scene and this movie but it is a MUST to have it here..... do you know which is the part i replayed over and over the most from SNF? exactly! the Travolta dance with "you should be dancing"!
YouTube - "John Travolta" Saturday Night Fever 1977
i like all the parts when they dance but specially the "K-Jee" coreography, and the "open sesame" was so dynamic too! i like the part when they get into the disco and you can hear "If i can't have you" there's a short time filming a black man doin pretty well! also good dances the "disco inferno" one and the square dance (was it called like that?) with "Night Fever" theme. but apart from that i want that Travolta solo thing!
2. Another one i like so much is the guy dancing in the Sister Sledge Videoclip of "The Greatest Dancer". The girls could dance it too! i like their choreography, and those legs moving like that (omg! i want one of those shiny tight pants!!!) yeah, but first at the beginning with the shadow silouete and in the end with his apearance his dance is simple but effective! i love when he walks back very fast and everytime he cross the legs behind. He has presence in the whole stage! Anybody know's who is he? was he some important dancer or just a simple anonimous from the staff?
Video Sister Sledge - He's The Greatest Dancer - Sister, Sledge, He's, The, 79 - Dailymotion Share Your Videos
3. I could not forget about the real GREATEST DANCER! i'm talking about Michael Jackson!!!! he mix perfectly both kind of arts, by singing with soul and dancing naturally and fluently with amazing moves! there are many clips of him dancing and you know which ones are the best! Thriller, Beat It, Billy Jean...all of them CLASSIC! but i want to look on Off The Wall time. If i'm no wrong it was the disco era so we had MJ doin it in his own style but i think enough disco to post here. Rock with you was good yeah! but "Don't Stop till you get enough" makes me feel so good with every pelvic thrust and everytime he points! yeah!
YouTube - Michael Jackson - Don't stop till you get enough
4. Also wanna say somethin about some videos that we talked about in other topic made by Tim Tam http://www.discomusic.com/forums/dis...ep-hustle.html
yeah! i'm talkin about Dance television show "Disco Step by step" videos posted in youtube! as you know theese are several clips about how to Hustle , some are tutorial and some just showin people dancing.
YouTube - sb1s1d's Videos
5. And Finally, special mention for what have became my fevourite Disco Dancing Videos of all time!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! i think yall know what i'm talking about...if don't take a look around the spottydog4472 acount and his wonderful collection of videos. Still don't???? ah yeah! he has uploaded The Disco Dance Championship Finals !!!!!!!
YouTube - spottydog4472's Videos
check ALL of them!!!! there's some Hustle, and a lot of solo freestyle specially choreographed for the UK and Worldwide competitions celebrated in that TV program in years 1978 1979 1980 and 1981.
I LOVE from the presentation to the last part when they chose the winner!!!! one of my favourites is the one where we see Julie Brown, winner of the 1979 UK Disco Dance Finals
YouTube - 1979,UK, Disco Dance finals (Pt3)
and that's all i have to say for the moment!!! ooof! maybe too long? Tell whatever you think about the videos, the idea of the thread, the one who has created it, hahahahahaha whatever!!! talk talk talk!!! :icon_mrgreen:
Eva, nice homework and great to read the personal feeling you have when watching all those vids but...I think you forgot a very important 1. A clip that is rated very high by many on the board here and perfectly shows what the real Disco feeling was all about. It was not the "square dance" or is it a "line dance" (I'm not good in categorising those dances).
It was the omni-feelgood-joy-uplifting Sylvester vid for "Dance/Disco Heat".
oooooh!!!! i knew that video but didn't want to abuse so i left many vids to post! it's good to rewatch it cause now i've realized of new things i didn't noticed before! for example: what they do using a piece of clothe! Cool cool moves!!!! i see some wacking in it (wacking is pretty much used in disco dancing, don't you think?) and also some Lockin!!! can you see the locker in the end of the video wearing that biiiig hat? :icon_biggrin:
yeah! i think "line dance" is better word for it..... the worst thing with dance and music is to put them into categories. I'ts like if sb wanted to separate it when it's only one big thing. But it's good to have some words to describe it, you know, it's some way to share it too.
You don't have to be a dancing expert but it's cool to know a little bit about the origin of the moves and all that stuff. If you don't know what Lockin is check this:
YouTube - The Lockers
Ands it's more than cool to see the evolution of dance through time going hand by hand with music. That's how i think that wacking was borned, i'ts like some exagerated lockin movements with arms, more "femenin" way,"throwing" your arms:
YouTube - Donna Arrogante and Tiffany Bong Punking/Wacking Routine
i would say that the next step would be Voguing, don't you think?
YouTube - Vogue Classique
the first of those dance is credited to Don Campbellock (who created the lockers) YouTube - campbellocks solos , the second one (wackin) to Tyrone "The Bone" Proctor YouTube - Tyrone Proctor Teaching Waacking and Voguing to Willie Ninja YouTube - Ode to Willi Ninja 2007 Pill Awards Tribute
i don't know what i'm doin now! trying to teach you about dancing techniques when i'm sure you've seen much more than this on the dancefloors you've been! but wanted to show some kind of base for those who didn't know about it, not doin a dance tutorial.
7. after this big parentesis i want to show you one of my favourite videos/dancers who is Shabba doo (you'll recognize him in the film "Breakin'") . He also was part from "The Lockers" and if i'm not wrong he danced in Soul Train, apart from a lot of tvshows, videoclips, etc. He really made popular the wackin dance style. In this video you'll see him lockin, poppin, wackin, hustlin and a lot more to "The Break" by Katmandu! he was (still is) so creative!
YouTube - SHABBA DOO
another example of his awesome dancing here
YouTube - Shabba-Doo Waackin
8. OF COURSE my other big inspiration in what dancing means are the Soul Train videos!!!!!!!!!! i love ALL of them!!!! and i'm sure you recognize many of the styles we said before! :icon_biggrin:![]()
Great topic Wever !
Okay , here a few which always get me ready to party :
Video Patrice Rushen .Never Gonna Give You Up.[SoulTrainTv 80's] - CAPTAINFUNKonTheRADIO, SoulFunk - Dailymotion Share Your Videos
Video Herbie Hancock _ you bet your love - Herbie, Hancock, _, you, love - Dailymotion Share Your Videos
( btw , is it possible to post Dailymotion-clips here in the same way as the ones from youtube
( screen visible in one's post ) ? )
uhm , nevermind my post above (lol) ... i thought it was about disco-videos in general![]()
The music is Joe Quatermain, and most of the dancing is probably to funk music, but Scooby Doo Foster was a soul train locker, doing the dance (Locking) that would be used well into the late 70s (embedding is disabled, hence the url link):
Scooby Doo Foster
Some more Soul Train dancing synched up to Ice - Time Will Tell, although you can see some early 70s dancing clips of people doing stuff like the breakdown:
If anyone can ID the music in this soul train clip, I'd much appreciated. I don't think it's War, but some other latin funk group:
soutrain dance 1
Dancing to Rufus' 'Once You Get Started:
soultrain dance 2
Late 70s soul train guys dancing to Galaxy by War:
soultrain dance 3
Electric Boogaloos on late 70s/early 80s Soul Train doing some Poppin', which was a dance style that evolved in the late 70s and later became part of the hip hop breaker's repertoire:
I can't find the original promo film for Kelly Marie's 'Feels Like I'm In Love' on youtube, but this little documentary shows pieces of it. The two guys dancing in her video are really good. I hate the song, but the promo film was hilarious:
This is a recent clip, but they're dancing to old 70s cuts in the poppin and lockin styles, from Japan:
Disco Funk

don't worry boogiejuice!!!! i didn't know some of the vids as for example the herbie hancock one, where we can see some dancing too!!!
awww yeah! thank you Disco Funk (and everybody!) for your collaboration! the one with the soul train line is AWESOME!and the Ice song too!
OK! Now is my turn!!
1. This are a serie of 5 vids titled as "70s Soul and Disco Line Dance" from the Soul Train, and for the clothes they're wearing i'd say is from the disco era (correct me if i'm wrong).
once you get started - Chacka Khan
isn't the guy with the enormous bow tie Jeffrey Daniel from Shalamar???
this one is more 80s thing
this one too (how crazy is the chicken!)
and back to the disco thing with "Galaxy" by War
of course my favourite ones are the first, the second and the last one! you can see some Lockin (also in the Scooby Doo Foster video! he caould really Lock it!!!) cause i think Soul Train was more of a FUNK thing but Disco had his influence too, of course!
2. Now, i think we shouldn't forget about one of the most personal disco dancing styles! and i guess some of you have tryed to do like him hahahahaha :icon_lol: but none of you couldn't cause he is so Unique!!!! I'm talking about Bobby Farrell from Boney M !!!
1977 Ma Baker:
I think everybody has seen this sexy dance with Daddy Cool, i think the most famous vid by them YouTube - BONNY M DADDY COOL
and the same song but here the dancing is so exhausting! YouTube - Boney M - Daddy Cool
You can see how he is doin now in this commercial (is some kind of sad feeling to me :( ).
The hit in the air, the step behind and the spins are my favourite moves by him... he also can move his arms but sometimes looks like a big mess!:icon_confused:
3. Maybe you think i'm a bit retarded but i've recently discovered this vids of a similar program to Soul Train but made in Detroit that was called The Scene
Sharevari (so advanced music for 1982, don't you think? i guess that's because of Detroit)
"You Shook me all night long! 1984 YouTube - The Scene Slingshot You Shook me all night long
And a group poppin YouTube - The Scene Funkateers Wordy Rappinghood
4. let tell you George Michael did a pretty disco song with "Let's go Outside" , and yeah! the choreography is nothing special but is fine :) (plus i always dream that when i get into the WC the whole forniture changes like this! hahahaha)
5. and my last one (for the moment) with people Hustlin to one of my favourite disco songs i know! "Keep On Jumpin" by Musique, i love it to death!!!! it's a PLEASURE see theese people moving like that (i wish i knew how to dance like that!)
PS: sorry for not ambeding videos before! ^^U i forgot about this http://www.discomusic.com/forums/sit...deos-your.html
tell me if you think my posts are too long, sometimes i write too much without sayin nothin hahahaha.
LOL :icon_mrgreen:
Oh wow , i'll have to dig through all the posts here.
Education-classes have started , lol.
Meanwhile 'id like to add these :
................................................
This one below is unique ( imo ) ... a rare flashback & one of the only Soutrain-episodes where Supreme Mary Wilson manages to get Don Cornelius in the famous Soultrain-line:
.............................................
Here some more episodes from "The Scene"
...............................................
Poplockers :
.............................................
Okay , although not a classic discodance ... here below one which is actually a contemporary update of how breakdance has evolved.
I just want to show this amazing footage here
This dude is unreal ! ... topping the force of gravity :

One of my fave party jams !
.............................................
Video CONTROLLERS - stay - CONTROLLERS, -, stay - Dailymotion Share Your Videos
The moves and outfits in the beginning of "Stay" are kinda corny , lol
Great slowjam though
aaaaaaaaahhhh yes!!!! how could i forget about that whispers Clip!!!! one of my favs too! :icon_biggrin: anybody recognize any dancer? i remember watching it on youtube and sb identified they guy breakin with the hat, but i can't find that comment now!
the controllers did very well too! there's no guys gettin down like that nowadays!!!!
and aaaaahhhhhh Mr Brown tutorial! i think my favourite step from them is the "camel walk" yeaaah!!!
i got another!!!!!!!!!!!! the "Brother" dancing to Love in C minor by Cerrone!!!! the chicks moving around and the orange colour of the scene creates such a great atmosphere but apart from the main character who is supposed to be Cerrone himself, the real star is that guy dancing!!!! su fluent moves!!!
OOOOH!!!! and what about the dance group called Hot Gossip ???? THEY WERE REALLY AMAZING! I particularly love when they dance to Supernature! i like EVERYTHING but i think specially when the black guy catch the woman and then let her down on the floor.... so beautiful choreography!!! tell me about any other you specially like!:icon_biggrin:
i like the new version too....and the dancers are cool.....but it don't has the same 70s Disco feeling i think YouTube - cerrone - supernature (90's version)
Hey! if we're looking for the roots of dancing you'd better check the Nicholas Brothers tap dance!!!! CRAZY movements but amazing skills!!! they could really rock the floor!!!! The last part is so ouch! harmful to see hahahaha but this is how some lockin steps originated!
that's all :icon_mrgreen:
ok...this is not a special dance with a disco dancing scene for a Chic performance of Good Times.
this is from another thread (Group Disco Hug) posted by CdnBob:
can anybody explain???? better if you have a video to show....thanx! :icon_mrgreen:...everyone in the room was doing the bump, hustle, and other assorted disco dances.
GREAT !!!!!
I dig these vintage videos so much ... it's just pure musicians and dancers having a ball. That constant grin/smile on Cerrone's face is priceless !
I've always seen records of the producing drummer in the past , but never explored that much into his catalogue.
And i found another great clip of him which has much energy :
As you might see & hear in the video ... the lead-singer/dancer isn't the one who's actually singing
And the Hot Gossip-clip is a TRIP !!!!!... dig that flashback too
Always great to see The Nicholas Brothers in action :worshipping emoticon: :icon_cool:
Also cool to see Mister Cab Calloway in that video ... what a history !!!!!
"Hi-dee-hi-dee-hi-dee-ho!"
