R.I.P. Vampira, 1921-2008!

Maybe this sounds quite strange but Vampira has passed away at the age of 86. Born, Maila Nurmi, she has made a great career in portraying the queen of early gothic cinema, starred in the infamous "Plan 9 from outer space" and had her own Emmy-nominated TV show in the 50's. In real she was a very caring and nice woman.

Maila was the first Finnish-born scream queen - not that there have been too many of those. A brief history of this very esoteric subject: Ann Savo alias Anneli Sauli got murdered a few times in German krimi films based on Edgar Wallace mysteries. One-time Miss World or was it Miss Universum Anne Pohtamo was seen sniffing coke in "Wolfen" and then getting ripped to bits by Red Indian werewolves prowling the back alleys of Manhattan, circa 1981. Anne is now a repugnant born-again christian passing hateful judgements left and right. Burn Anne Burn! Then, during the 70's and 80's, Sirpa Lane aka Sirpa Laine starred in a whole bunch of Italian gore/soft porn outrages such as Svastica Nel Ventre/Living Nightmare and Papaya Liebesgottin des Cannibalen. Sirpa also appeared in Borowczyk's amazing arthouse fave Le Béte/The Beast, in which she gave a handjob to a bear-like mutant creature ( comeshot included), and came to another sticky end in Roger Vadim's Charlotte Une Jeune Fille Assasineé . She's dead now, of aids. And finally last year, long legged and very gorgeous Vera Jordanova as Alex lured slumming American teens to their hideous and well deserved deaths in Hostel Part 2 (Videoskooter's fave of the year).
