.. back in 1975 Tom Moulton famously mixed the original version of "Free Man" by the South Shore Commission on Scepter .. a very classic disco record .. Tom Moulton recently put out a new 6 minute remix on his "New York Classics" compilation CD, which is certainly worth hearing .. but now I've discovered the 10 minute super-extended remix by Mr Moulton on a 12" single from Half Moon Records .. this has loads of superb instrumental breaks & vocal re-edits, but still sounds like it was recorded 30 years ago .. it's crafted with the same love, care & precision he recently devoted to his remixes on First Choice & the Fantastic Johnny C, making this the deffinitive mix for disco fans ..
I should have mentioned this as another one of my least favourite remixes by him. There's something that's just not quite right about the sound of the instruments. The drums seem to especially lack the punch that was on the original. I felt the same about some of the mixes on the New York Classics CDR. I also didn't like how the vocals seem to be poorly double-tracked. Like there were two sets of vocals that were slightly out of sync, which I found distracting. It's nice to hear a different take on the recording, but it just didn't sound right.

Disco_Funk .. my friend .. you can be SO infuriating .. here's the most innovative & exciting new disco remix in years .. and you don't like it .. It would have been so easy for Mr Moulton to have simply stuck an instrumental bit at the end, or perhaps in the middle .. But no .. he completely re-designs the track with a remix that sounds like it was done back in '76 (which can't be easy on today's equipment) .. producing the conclusive remix of an established disco classic .. any mid-seventies dancefloor would have gone into nuclear overload had this been available 30 years ago .. Tom Moulton creates a wonderful & engaging new masterpiece .. and you don't like it ..
I hear ya, but you must also agree that I can't be expected to like everything that Tom puts out. When it comes to disco music, the drums have to be popping. If they sound muffled or distorted and lack the punch of the 70s mixes, then I don't find the sound appealing. But that's disco music for me. The sound of the drums can make or break a song for me.
Disco Funk
.. well, I suppose the real test is the reaction this track would receive on a dancefloor .. so many old classics are simply re-edited or repeat-sampled under a house beat .. a formula that has become tiresome now .. .. so I think Tom Moulton should be congratulated for attempting something different .. as I think I've said already, this for me now is the deffinitive version of this tune .. I'll have no reason to listen to the original version again ( .. just as I never revisited the original LP mix of "Love is the message" after the release of "Philadelphia Classics" )

SOUTH SHORE COMMISSION - Freeman
.. .. note this remix is much longer (and in my opinion, far superior) to the 6 minute mix on "New York Classics vol 1"
