    Canadian Sounds

    Hello,

I am a DJ on the local campus station and lately there has been a push for us to meet our Canadian content quotas (40% for my show).
It's a groove show so we play disco, soul, funk, r&b, hip hop, etc. Pretty much anything that makes you want to shake your ass.
Anywho, we've pretty much been meeting our quota by playing 40% Canadian hip hop.
Personally I don't want 40% of my show to be hip hop so here's what I'm looking for:

The names of any artists, songwriters, etc. that are of Canadian origin. Anything that would kinda fit into what I've listed above. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Feel free to e-mail me directly.

    Re: Canadian Sounds

Lots of Canadian (well, Québec, really) disco out there; much of it still available from Unidisc. Check out the following:

France Joli -- had the megahit "Come To Me"
Kebekelektrik -- classic electronic disco, almost proto-trance
Gino Soccio -- The "Outline" album is ESSENTIAL!
    Katmandu -- especially "The Break"
    Bombers
Freddie James -- pre-pubescent male vocals, not my thing but was huge at the time
Lime -- very "distinctive" Hi-NRG, you either love 'em or loathe 'em

Out of print stuff that's most definitely worthy:
Caroline Bernier -- horrible vocals, great music
Tony Green -- also produced and wrote for many other artists
Claudja Barry -- note: only half CanCon; producers and songwriters on her classic material were German
    Grand Tour
    Skatt Bros
    Carl Harvey -- more funk-oriented
    THP Orchestra, AKA THP
    Sticky Fingers
    The Duncan Sisters
    Black Light Orchestra
    The Immortals
André Gagnon -- did a few piano-disco records in the 70s
    Bob-A-Rela
Space Project -- supercheesy space-disco. Fun!
lots of 7" and 12" singles released on Able in the 70s

And one last one that I must mention...
Swan Song by Birds Of A Feather. Appears to be a one-off single; and is a disco cover of Swan Lake from 1976. Indescribeable.

    Beckie Bell

"Super Queen" by Beckie Bell is a Canadian disco production also.

When I was in Toronto last August I heard the P.E.I. band Kindle perform live. One of their new songs (apparently not on their first album) had a disco beat and rock guitars with fiddles. I hope they release it soon.

Chatelaine, if you're for some reason looking for a Canadian version of Raffaella Carra. Chatelaine had a trembling drama queen voice and a very small 1977 hit with "Corps A Corps", a French language reworking of Raffaella's biggest dancefloor offender "Do It Do It Again/A Far L'Amore Comincia Tu". I don't know what Chatelaine looks or looked like but I'm pretty certain she came across much like Raffaella, with a bleached perm, multiple layers of Rimmel and a figure-hugging maxi dress.
