Had I been an adult in the 60s I would have been a Soul listener instead of the usual acid rock/psychedelic music one usually thinks of (later 60s).
Sure, there is very few rock acts from the later 60s I dig. I'm more into the mellow sound, so all I can think of now is Simon and Garfunkel (nice mellow rock) and the later 60s Beach Boys (when Brian Wilson took over the creative reigns 65-67) like Pet Sounds (creative genious musical explosion on LP). I do like the more mellow tunes from The Beatles, stuff like that. Early 60s (pre-British invasion I like it all).
BACK TO 60s SOUL, some of my favorite artists and tracks.
Little Anthony and the Imperials: "Goin out of my head"; "Hurts so Bad"; "I'm on the Outside". (Spectacular, beautiful).
Jerry Butler "He will break your heart", Moon River", "Let it be Me" and even though it was in 1958 I've gotta include "For your precious love" (awesome)!
The Intruders "Cowboys to Girls" (wow, love the strings on this one, awesome tune).
The Supremes (too many songs to name; love em).
The Temptations (great)
Curtis Mayfield and the Impressions (too many to name; love em; however, the first song I heard that turned me on to them was "People get ready". I love mayfields lyrics, REAL DEEP LYRICAL CONTENT).
Dionne Warwick "Anyone who had a heart"; "Don't make me over"; Walk on By"; (beautiful can't even describe it).
Four Tops (love them)
Ray Charles "Lucky Ole Sun"; "Georgia on my Mind" etc. (Ray was awesome, he could make me feel the emotion of any lyrics with his voice).
Aretha Franklin (ofcourse)
Marvin Gaye (great; also I love his late 60s duets with Tammy Terell)
Johnny Rivers (he's 'Soul' too me) Poor Side of Town; Baby I Need Your Lovin"; "The Tracks of my Tears. (Love Mr. Rivers stuff).
Roy Orbison (R & B too me): "Blue Angel"; "Running Scared"; "Crying"; "In Dreams"; "Blue Bayou"; "It's Over"; (I ca't describe in words how much I love his music; THE beautiful melodies and SOARING vocals it's akin too R & B too me.
I KNOW I'M FORGETING to name so many (this just off the top of my head) thats why I'D LOVE TO HEAR FROM YOU ALL.
Who were some of your favorite soul acts, songs etc from the 1960s. I've got to say something about 60s soul THAT I LOVE so much; THE VOCALS and HARMONIES.

THANKS for the 'heads up' efunkadelic. I didnt know it was real slow in here. I almost didnt come back to check again; but saw someone had posted from my email.
You mentioned the Marvelettes; simply awesome. I have heard the track you mentioned several times; and I think I got the right chorus line running through my head now (think its it); anyway I'll check it out again but I remember liking it. They have some outstanding harmony. One of the things I really dig about 60s Soul.
We got alot of Soul artist likes in common. Jerry Butler is awesome. I'll have to check out the ones youve mentioned; though I wonder if "never gonna give you up" is an earlier version of Barry's early 70s groovin track; I'll check on that. DIONNE; yeah....simply mellow and beautiful. I have heard an Elgins track I know; I'll check into that as well.
What happened to everyone in here though efunk? Are they elsewhere; or just like to come around sometimes? I know the 'Disco' forum is hoppin.

I'm pretty sure that the majority of us on this website love our 60s soul....it was the breeding ground for 70s disco....but I think maybe there's just too many titles to list to give certain songs justice.
There are all those great artists on the Atlantic, Motown and Stax labels plus smaller labels like Wand and Chess....just grab a greatest hits compilation from any one of these talents and those will be my favourites until the next album is spun.
But if someone pinned me down and forced me to name a song (hehe...the mind wanders), I think it would be Wilson Pickett's In The Midnight Hour. Between Wilson Pickett and Percy Sledge, it's a toss-up on who showed more soulful muscle.

HEY DISCOKICKS, good to see you in here bro. I noticed your posts and some of them I know, but not well enough yet to remark. However, if I looked em up some of them would probably be very familiar (just not by title). Although, "what becomes of the brokenhearted" is awesome, one of my favs. too. Also, TOWER OF POWER "So very hard to go"; and GAUD how could I forget JACKIE WILSON "Lonely Teardrops" (1958). This guy had a voice I could listen too all day. I also just heard a really cool one (first time) from Linda Jones "Hypnotized", really groovin. STILL ALOT TO LEARN, I'm enjoying it. Your right though DISCO, there are so many hits to mention; thats why I posted so I could see what some other were checking out, and further my study of late 50s 60s Soul. However, Mr. NANO NANO got offended by me wondering whether the site was still visited (thats what my second post was really all about).

I hear you there. Exploring and discovering great music from the past is what I think most of us here enjoy...that and connecting with others who share the same passion and interest. It's a good website to do that because there isn't the same pretention and arrogance that you might encounter on other music appreciation sites simply because disco is so regarded as the bastard child in our society.
