needlefingers, glad you liked it. However next week is the moment of truth, can Darnel Browne (The Lord Of Flatbush) and I dethrone a GOD? I am sure everyone here knows that Delmar was a contributor to the Discomusic.com DJ Certified Top 700 Dance Classics and a frequent flyer at Paradise Garage. Catch us next week and be the judge.
Boogie, I apologize if I derailed your thread but to continue is an exercise in futility. Levan when compared to other DJ's of the time was mediocre at best but somehow managed to be placed on an undeserving pedestal. This is the same as lining up 10 people and each one tells something to the person on the right. By the time the story get’s all the way to the end, it is completely distorted. Are we back on track now?
Other than our disagreement about the "GOD" status, the music was cool. Please listen next week as I guarantee you won't be disappointed in the music you hear.

Dying young can add to the legend.
Jimi Hendrix. Jim Morrison. Janis Joplin.
These three played concerts many times on drugs. And ended up with well below par performances.
The public is sometimes attracted to "train wrecks".
What I can say about my experiences at the Paradise Garage as a DJ was Larry's programming was magical. The dancers were in anticipation where Larry was going with his set. OK, his mixing were on the decline as the years went by but his passion for setting the mood was heard. My six years as a member of the Paradise Garage witnessed great music, performances and friends acquired along the way.
The final night was touching but it was time to move on!
No research of songs played at the Paradise Garage from an edited listing could capture what I heard Larry played there.
Honorable Mention - Francois K played one of the most, magical sets ever heard there.
Can I Get A Witness?
The balloons, confetti, crystal room, dance floor, sound system, punch, fruit, movie room, roof top, unisex bathrooms etc.,
Need I say more?
To top it off, going to Vinyl Mania Records later that day just to find what Larry played the night before.
It's About The Music and The Connection!
Hey! No one is gonna accept that a DJ was maybe just so-so if they went to a club for 6 years. All I'm saying is that our friend might be very biased. What I can say about my experiences at the Paradise Garage as a DJ was Larry's programming was magical. Surely this would have been the same for any decent DJ?The dancers were in anticipation where Larry was going with his set.

And the tape recording shows it, doesn't it?
Hopefully the same for most good DJs. Nothing special. No research of songs played at the Paradise Garage from an edited listing could capture what I heard Larry played there.
I think we can accept that you liked the place. Loyal dancers from any other joint would say their place was special. At the height of Disco there must have been many, many top clubs, all with a unique/great atmosphere. What we're discussing is why and how Levan has been given God status, when in the eyes of many, he wasn't that special as a DJ. For there to be any meaningful discussion the rose tinted glasses have to come off.The balloons, confetti, crystal room, dance floor, sound system, punch, fruit, movie room, roof top, unisex bathrooms etc.,
No, not really.Need I say more?
Again, I find myself thinking "what's sooo different?".To top it off, going to Vinyl Mania Records later that day just to find what Larry played the night before.
That's all it was about for any given DJ and any given audience and presumably, they all made that connection. It's About The Music and The Connection!
We're never gonna agree on this, are we?
Sorry about that bro.....

Truth of the matter regarding what made Larry so different than other DJ's at that time was the story being told from his set.The final night was touching but it was time to move on!/QUOTE]

For example, he would've played Clouds - Chaka Khan then mix Eddie Kendricks - Date With The Rain right after that.
It wasn't about the mix, it was the page turned from a chapter in his story.
A great reference about the Garage in part is the Maestro - DVD.
Those who provided testimonials supplied their story about Larry, the Garage and other clubs.
Quinny, use an open mind and get the Maestro - DVD for the full picture.
My Life and the Paradise Garage - Keep On Dancin' by Mel Cheren is a great book from a personal perspective.
I mentioned about Larry's set briefly in my last post as for Francois K's set, it was the first time that he played the acapella of Love Sensation - Loleatta Holloway then the Dub Version of D-Train - Keep On and the 12" Version of Beat The Street - Sharon Redd. Great moments just to name a few!
With all due respect I dont think Quinny is going to have an epiphany from viewing Maestro. Im a Levan fan and I was very disappointed with it. I thought there was far too much art/film school nonsense and not enough depth and research made into the wonderful source material which was at the disposal of the creators. Fair enough if you see different, but thats just my 2 cents.
From the point of view of someone who has read many such books and seen Maestro, I would recommend Love Saves The Day by Tim Lawrence. It provides the facts and testimonials on the various clubs and djs of that era in an unbiased and well written way. For me it seems the definitive text in documenting that era thus far
As this topic does not appear to have an end in sight, I thought it would be a goold time for a commercial. Don't miss the fantastic show, details below.

I have read all the posts on this thread and they are quite intresting, but it all seems a little pointless. There are some who think levan walks on water and some who think he might be the most over hyped bum ever and that is'nt going to change. I believe that you cant get a correct read of levan as a dj by listening to one of his mixes, some djs hava an amazing skill set that allows them to convey a vibe on a cd,and some you have to hear them live. I believe that levan might not have had the amazing skills of some other djs,but was a very good dj, probably just chose not to use his skill all the time, probably was not important to him to make a seamless, elegant mix. But, the man could rock a party and for the people who were garage regulars he took them to that place, that place where you lose yourself in the music, and thats what all djs should aspire to do. They were willing to put up with his antics because they knew that sometime during that night he was going to do something amazing. So to sum it up was levan the best ever? a god? probably not, but to the people he touched on those nights at the garage-he was and thats all that matters. if we all could only touch people like that and have such a following.
Larry levan is one of my favourite dj's from back then, but I didnt like the mix that was posted in the first message.
Im not saying that Im such a big disco connoisseur, but this was one of my favourite mixes that I've heard from him:
