    New buys and some thinking

Here's some vinyl I caught at the fair:

-EVELYN "CHAMPAGNE" KING - Smooth talk (1978)
-CAROL DOUGLAS - Midnight love affair (1976)
-GLORIA GAYNOR - Never can say goodbye (1975)
-THE HUES CORPORATION - Freedom for the stallion (1973) (yes, Marky, I bought it too! :) )
    -CERRONE - 3/Supernature (1977)
-PATTI LABELLE - Idem (1977) (to check about that shrieking-diva syndrome :) )
    -ALEC R. COSTANDINOS & THE SYNCHOPHONIC ORCHESTRA - Featuring Alirol & Jacquet (1979) :o

Yes, you're probably wondering how come this guy says he loves funk and then buy Costandinos, old divas surrounded by violins, etc.? I had some reflexive time about this I came to the conclusion that, given that I can't find the records I really was looking for (say, Gino Soccio, Raydio, One Way, Unlimited Touch, etc.) I end buying other things for name, price or both.
It's sad but I came to the conclusion that, at least in Buenos Aires, all funky-disco post-1980 is unavailable or very high-priced (ditto for some Italian product like La Bionda). The other day I found one guy at the fair with all the vinyl I was looking for (those mentioned plus T.S. Monk, Karen Silver, Firefly, etc.), but he sold them almost at the price of a new CD each. Boy, I was pissed!
I guess the reason is these albums were not released locally and were available only as imports. On the other hand, most pre-1980 disco stuff had a local release and you find it cheap (RCA released many Philly material plus some indie small labels like Midland Int. and early Prelude).
I wonder how's that in your city, guys. What's the more valuated stuff, and why?
It don't mean a thing (if ain't got that swing)

    - Essential!

    CERRONE - 3/Supernature (1977)

    - I actually prefer side 2 to side 1 of this...

    ALEC R. COSTANDINOS & THE SYNCHOPHONIC ORCHESTRA - Featuring Alirol & Jacquet (1979) :o

    - This is not one of his better efforts, but it does have its moments.

Well, there are only a couple of places that really sell this stuff at all, but...

...generally, the most expensive items are from the very small underground funk/disco labels. It really depends on the track, although there are some labels where just about anything goes for big bucks. Many of these labels had zero distribution here to begin with, so they are scarce to begin with. And most of the records were pressed in small quantities... sometimes only a few hundred, of which only a fraction would still be around today. However, there are exceptions... I have seen 12"s distributed locally by the major labels that go for a lot. It really all comes down to how much the seller thinks they can get for it. Occasionally I come across a record that the seller seems to think is obscure and culty, even though I *know* it sold in the millions back in the day.

aaahh record fairs - don't you just love 'em.
being able to take musical chances without risking the big bucks!!

I went to one once and bought 97 albums and 12" at once.
Loads of crap in there but also great things by BB & Q Band, John Klemmer, John Handy and 12" from Paulie Carman and The Soul Club.

They only costed me about (the equivalent of) 25 cent each.
Guess that only happens once in a lifetime :D :D

You see, in denmark nobody cares about quality music (it's all sum 41 over here) and helps guys like me a lot :P
    There was life after disco!!

Excellent cd Delight. It's one of my favorites. I see you have mixed feelings about "Over Like A Fat Rat" and "Always There." Interesting.

    Hi Paul

I bought this cd because I had to get "Free Man" once and for all and it was $9.99. from ht first day "Over Like A Fat Rat" played on air, I couldn't stand it. It didn't help that it was popular with everyone else so I was forced to hear it. As Far As "Always There", I don't hate it however it dosen't move me like "Free Man" or "Funky Sensation". Correct Me if I'm wrong but a couple of months ago didn't you say that you didn't like "Is It All Over My Face"????????????

Funny cause I bought that CD especially for "Always There"--one of my alltime favorites. I never tire of that tune. Incognito with Jocelyn Brown also did an excellent cover in the mid-90's.

"Free Man" reminds me of when I first moved to SF in 1975; it was played all the time. I guess it's a guy and a girl taking turns singing , but it always sounds like 2 guys to me...and therefore takes on a "gay" connotation. Hey, I thought all this music was "gay"---especially recorded for gay clubs!!!

   I had to laugh because you and thousands of others thought the same thing. It sounds like two men! Her voice is so low and so strong I can even play it today and forget it's a female vocal. The guys used to sing it back and forth to each other all the time. And we didn't have to strain anything :D .
