Neil Diamond "September Morn"; "Hello Again"; "Love on the Rocks"
Kenny Rogers "You decorated my life"; "She believes in me"; "Lady"

POSSIBLY my ultimate favorite is PLAYER "Baby Come Back (listed above). This one really takes me back big time! The bass line, keyboards, vocals. This is a list of many of my favorites from the era(the ones which I never get tired of, and can remember at the moment; there are others).

Re: Your Favorite tracks, artists, albums 'in the Disco era' that WERE NOT disco

Disco is part of my interest in 70s music. It's the funk (specifically songs that have been sampled by rap artists) that are my main passion. Also, solo material by the Fab Four is great. I can't really get too specific because I like anything. The only groups I'm kind of tired of listening to or aren't interested in their work are artists like Abba, Fleetwood Mac, Billy Joel (except for that Stilleto track that was sampled by various rap artists), Bruce Springsteen and other middle of roadish rock artists.

Some of the stuff in the lists called 'non-disco' I would personally call disco, like Lowdown by Boz Scaggs.

Woah, good, long posts, enjoyed reading the songs.

THANK ALL yall for the posts. Danya and qdearl; you both reminded me of some other favorites of mine which I didnt list. Like Eric Carmen "All by Myself"; "This is It" by Loggins; "Babe" by Styx; and other Ambrosia songs listed (I love them).

Hey DANYA, so you like the Isley's, thats really cool. You happen to like "Footsteps in the Dark"? I love that track, it really has a groove.

He's a couple more I forgot from the late 70s Disco Era:

Lou Rawls "You'll Never find another love like mine" (Ok, I know its could be called Soul or Disco (on this one) but I can't resist its such a good pop song.

    Starbuck "Moonlight Feels Right"

Earth Wind and Fire "After the Love is Gone"

    Commodores "Three Times a Lady"

Anyone REMEMBER THIS ONE from early 81?
Olivia Newton John/Andy Gibb "I Can't Help It" (I love duets BTW).

Re: Your Favorite tracks, artists, albums 'in the Disco era' that WERE NOT disco

My tastes, other than disco, were in the direction of soft rock and country. The Eagles could do no wrong and that led me to my love of the steel guitar...started listening to Waylon Jennings and Wille Nelson and in '78, I discovered Emmylou Harris' album Quarter Moon In A Ten Cent Town which just seemed to grab me for some reason...so here I was this smalltown guy in his late teens torn between the big city hot sounds of disco and the earthy sounds of outlaw country!

    Albums...

Eagles - Greatest Hits, Hotel California
    Fleetwood Mac - Rumours
Linda Ronstadt - Simple Dreams, Prisoner In Disguise, Hasten Down The Wind
    Bob Seger - Night Moves
Gerry Rafferty - City To City
Jackson Browne - Running On Empty

    Singles...

Kiss You All Over - Exile
    Baby Come Back - Player
    Miracles - Jefferson Starship
Fool If You Think It's Over - Chris Rea
    You're Only Lonely - J.D. Souther
    Lovin', Touchin', Squeezin' - Journey
How Much I Feel - Ambrosia
Just When I Needed You Most - Randy Vanwarmer
Hot Child In The City - Nick Gilder
Nights Are Forever Without You - England Dan and John Ford Coley
Do You Wanna Make Love - Peter McCann
Magnet and Steel - Walter Egan
    Dream Weaver - Gary Wright
    Ballroom Blitz - Sweet
Get Closer - Seals and Crofts
Two Out of Three Ain't Bad - Meatloaf

Re: Your Favorite tracks, artists, albums 'in the Disco era' that WERE NOT disco

Danya you mentioned America along with others. Yeah "Daisy Jane" is a real nice one; the loneliness in the lyrics can grab you hard through the melody as well (real nice and mellow). My favorite by them is "Sister Goldenhair". The way this song starts off; the guitar and steel together sets a mood. All these songs I'm mentioning hold memories for me as a kid.

DISCO KICKS; NO WAY MAN! Thats cool, you know I've always done the same DAMN thing, drifting between disco and soft rock of the 70s and first half of the 80s to the country of the same era. BTW, Willie Nelson is awesome; as was Walon Jennings. The whole sound of country in the 70s and early 80s was SLICK (pop) country, or rock (outlaw) country like Waylon, Willie, and Charlie Daniels. Bands like Firefall come to mind with awesome album covers and nice mellow hits (that country-mellow rock thing). Yeah, The Eagles were it back in the day (I love all their 70s stuff too).

BTW, I once had an 8 track tape with Willie and Waylon from 78 (trying to remember the name of it now). Anyway, I listened to it until it got ate up in my old 8 track player (the 8 track was given to me by a friend and was already old). Anyhow, I was pissed. It had songs on it that are so damn rare I couldnt even find on Napster (at that time, were talkin 4-5 years ago). One I can recall because the lyrics were so damn cool "take back the weed, take back the cocaine lady, take back the pills, and even the whiskey too, youre all I need, I can get high on you". Kinda explains the life of these party boys back then lol. Thats why I like the country back then, you know TODAY'S country singer is usually so damn redneck COWBOY type you cant fit him into any other genre. Like imagine one of todays straight laced (cowboy hat, GEORGE BUSH lovin) country singers talkin about COCAINE and POT lol.

BTW, you brought out some awesome tunes there too DISCO. Like "Nights are forever without you" (another country pop soudin tune). I am a big Seger fan, Fleetwood Mac; and BTW I forgot about "Fool if you think its over"; "kiss you all over" (awesome country-pop), "magnet and steel" (love the girls harmony); "miracles", and "get closer"; AWESOME SONGS! BTW, I love Dream Weaver! I'm not really into the hard rock (avant guard) 60s and early 70s sound so popular on classic rock radio; but the later 70s (arena rock era) mixed in keyboards and all stuff; like Manfred Man's "Blinded by the Light", or Kansas "Wayward Son"; simply awesome.

Really awesome to talk to another person who drifts between the old country and disco. If I had been an adult in the late 70s part of me would have wanted to be in New York City (disco), and the other in Nashville lol; what a damn contrast. Now, I cant stand the country of today (with very few acceptions like Shania who is just too damn hot lol).

Today's country, like today's pop, reeks of cold, calculated thought on what will sell. I picture a boardroom of slick business people picking and choosing products...I mean songs...based on their polished powerpoint presentations of where society's collective thinking is at currently. No room for expression or soul...just the need for big time profits. Maybe it's always been this way in the music biz...I don't know.

I think music in general from the 70s era had more authenticity and sincerity to it....whether it was country, pop rock, disco or r & b. I listen to those songs and I don't feel that these artists were forced to sing and release music that they weren't interested in performing. For the most part, they weren't sticking to one genre because that's what was hot at the moment...an obvious trend these past few years if you study the pop charts. Sure, there's the complaint about the rock artist who "lowered" themselves and put out a disco song, but even those few songs kept the soul of the artist intact.

But what a wonderful era it was! The diversity of music genres climbing the charts in the 70s is one that I'm so glad I grew up with. Songs like Al Green's Show and Tell competing with Charlie Rich's The Most Beautiful Girl in '74. In spring '77, you had Glen Campbell's #1 hit Southern Nights while later that year Heatwave hit close to the top with Boogie Nights!
What other era would have let Freddy Fender hit the top spot with Before The Next Teardrop Falls?

    A couple more favourite singles...

Love Will Find The Way - Pablo Cruise
Couldn't Get It Right - Climax Blues Band

Re: Your Favorite tracks, artists, albums 'in the Disco era' that WERE NOT disco

Hey PAULO; you know I didnt even know that Kate Bush had songs out in the 70s. I absolutely LOVE her song from 86 (almost certain) "Running up that Hill". A masterpiece! BACK TO TOPIC, I really love "summer breeze", anther tune that takes me back to childhood (in fact all of the ones Ive mentioned as favorites do just that). MOST IMPORTANTLY, "Aubrey" holds a special place in my heart. This was the first song I heard after I left the hospital room where my wife (now X) delivered our girl almost 7 years ago (very special)! I absolutely LOVE Bread, David Gates is an awesome writer and singer. I can't get into the hard rock of the late 60s and early 70s, but I love 60s and early 70s soul (big time), and the singer/songwriters of the early 70s.

DISCOKICKS, I agree wholeheartedly with your assesment on today's country; it seems the songs are so GENERIC; like "Im a redneck, I drive a big truck, watch nascar, and love wet T-shirt contests"; not a real song just an example lol. Plus, I cannot TOLERATE the sound of today's country. I mentioned I can listen too Shania, but she's real pop oriented (and hot lol). As you said pop music has gone this way too, no soul, alot of big business. IT WAS REALLY cool to hear from someone who likes the 70s/early 80s country era. BTW, Willie Nelson is awesome. I could listen to him pick (lead) guitar riffs forever (I mean when he plays a lead part it always ends too soon for me. My favorite song from Willie is out of the 'disco era'; 1982 "You were always on my mind". WHAT DO YOU THINK about Ronnie Milsap and Crystal? Two of my favorites (*beside Willie) for sure.
BTW disco, How old are you, and what state you live in? Just wondering if your a northern dude who digs the old country, or where raised around it like myself.

DANYA, I hope your coming back to read in here, I forgot to mention my favorite song by THE ISLEY BROTHERS (on my last post).
"For the Love of You" (Wow, the rhythm and harmonies on this one)!

I'm a northern dude alright...way northern up here in Canada...lol....but I definitely enjoy some old country as that was one of the styles of music that my parents listened to....Hank Williams, Patsy Cline, Eddy Arnold, etc. My father and my uncle both enjoyed big band as well so I think that's why I was so attracted to all those wonderful disco orchestras of the mid-70s.

In regards to Willie Nelson, I had totally forgot about how much I enjoyed his music in the late 70s 'til you brought up this subject of non-disco music. I went looking for the albums in my collection and found six of them...and the same count for Waylon Jennings! All this while my disco selections grew too....strange mixture....:icon_confused: My favourite Willie Nelson tune is his rendition of Ray Charles' hit That Lucky Old Sun ("ain't got nothin' to do but roll around heaven all day")...I think I was attracted to some quiet strength in Nelson's music and personality.

I liked Crystal Gayle as well. She was probably the first country singer who was aided by her beauty...too bad it didn't stop there....lol. Now, of course, looks are everything and if someone can't hit certain notes, well, we have ways of correcting that. Favourite hits of Gayle's would be Talking In Your Sleep and Don't It Make My Brown Eyes Blue....so bluesy and mellow....and so indicative of the 70s.

This topic of other music we listened to during that era is a great topic. Because music has been so vitally important to all of us on this website, it causes us to be reflective of our younger days and possibly helps to understand the person we are today.

Re: Your Favorite tracks, artists, albums 'in the Disco era' that WERE NOT disco

Thanks cbnBob for the list; see you love Daydream Believer too; I have heard Karen Carpenter's version of "I fall in love again", but prefer Anne Murray's. Don't get me wrong though, Karen Carpenter has a #10 voice (immaculate), I love The Carpenters; just like Murray's version of that tune better.

DISCOKICKS, I didnt realize my post caused you to 'sweep the cobwebs' off the old LPs so to speak; cool. BTW, Lucky Old Sun; I LOVE that Ray Charles song; got it on CD by Ray (I really like Ray Charles). In fact, I remember a Television special a few years back (think it was Willie's birthday bash) Ray played piano and sung with him; I swear I could see tears in Willie's eyes when Ray was singing (such Soul in his voice, can't help but feel it). I have never heard Willie's version though; I would like too.

Great tracks by Crystal, her voice is sooo beautiful (as was she). You ever heard "Its like we Never said Goodbye"? Thats another one of my favorites. BTW, you didnt tell me how old you are. I'm curious because I was a kid in the late 70s, all my memories are very young (elementary school and younger) of these late 70s tunes; I wondering if it was the same with you (you mentioned your parents music). I'VE GOT TO ASK YOU THOUGH (since you love the pop country) you remember "Baby I lied" by Sylvia (83); or how about "Seven Year Ache" by Rosanne Cash, and Juice Newton "Angel of the Morning" (both early 81); REMEMBER? Some more pop country favs.

I've got so many favs by Willie (and really like Waylon too BTW); another fav. which was a duet from 83 "Pancho Lefty" Mearle and WIllie. I also have the Honeysuckle Rose 8 track (funny right, 8 track lol); there is some awesome tunes and pickin on that one too.

Another favorite from the late 70s I gotta mention:

Robert John: Sad Eyes (1979) Brings back lots of memories

    Hi Billy

Kate Bush released her first 2 albums in the end of the seventies:
    1978 (THE KICK INSIDE)
    1979 (LION HEART)
    1980 (NEVER FOREVER).
The songs are is highly melodic and complex... a bit sad and melancholic, but always very beautifull.

If you have the chance, try to listen to them. They are masterpieces.

When the 80's arrived she changed her style to embrace newer influences (like techno-pop and the Peter Gabriel's world music influence) and new keyboard technologies (the Emulator). As a result, the albums got even better, but still very melancholic in essence:
    THE DREAMING is from 1983,
    HOUNDS OF LOVE from 1986,
    THE SENSUAL WORLD from 1989.

In the 90's she released a soul-inflected album THE RED SHOES (1993).

Then in the 2006 she released AERIAL (some called it progressive rock or art-rock...).

Kate Bush has a lot of credentials as an artist. And she really deserves it.

I can't get into the hard rock of the late 60s and early 70s, but I love 60s and early 70s soul (big time), and the singer/songwriters of the early 70s.
    I don't like HARD-ROCK too.
In fact I don't like heavy metal, gothic, punk, grunge, emo, indie.... it all sucks... but I like BREAD. The album from where AUBREY comes from (THE GUITAR MAN) is very good. All of their labums (5 or 6) were released on CD a while back. If you search the web, maybe you'll find them. What they play (you know) is pop-rock with some little country and folk flourishes here and there. David Gates and James Griffin are gifted musicians and writers.

I agree with many mentioned, especially those MOR rock acts like Steely Dan, Gino Vanelli, Player & Little River Band. So glad Kate Bush got mentioned as I've got all her albums & she is unique. One act that I always loved during the disco era & I don't think has been mentioned is 10cc with tracks like I'm Not In Love & I'm Mandy Fly Me. A class act & one of the few UK acts I like.

HEY DEE, you mentioned MOR rock, does that stand for 'mellow oriented rock' (just wondering)? Yeah, Steely Dan is is definately my favorite rock band of all time, their music just takes me back to the 70s (as does all the others Ive mentioned). BTW, you mentioned 10cc "I'm not in Love"; awesome track (thanks for bringing that one up). I can't say that I know that other 10cc track yet, I'll have to check it out; but "I'm not in Love" is so full of emotion (just in the melody) that one can get the 'feeling' of the lyrics from it alone. ANOTHER track IV'E ALREADY MENTIONED that has this melody emotion matching the lyrics is "Telephone Line" by ELO.

DEE, you also mentioned LITTLE RIVER BAND; my fav. by them (in the disco era) is "Reminiscing". POST DISCO ERA (early 81) "The Night Owls" an awesome (rare to hear nowadays) rock track. Great lead guitar towards the end of the track.

Paulo, thanks for the info on Kate Bush; I'll have to check into it.

BTW, a couple of other artists (and tracks) mentioned I really love:

    Bob Seger "We've got Tonight"

    Gerry Rafferty "Baker Street"

One not mentioned I forgot to mention ealier:

HOW ON EARTH DID I FORGET TO MENTION THIS ONE: (one of my all time favorite tracks of all time)
"Sailing" Christopher Cross (1980) Gaud, this song is so moving!

"Ride like the Wind" (same artist n year)

DOOBIE BROTHERS (with Michael Mcdonald; ofcourse) "It keeps you running"

I'm 46 so I was in my teens during the late 70s...too young to go to the clubs which really pissed me off back then...lol....so I lived it vicariously through the albums and singles that I could find in my home city, music charts and any television coverage of discos and artists.

Those pop country songs you mentioned are major favourites of mine. I have Baby I Lied on a 7" single...actually it's by Deborah Allen who wrote it....gorgeous song...and I have Roseanne Cash's first four albums. The Seven Year Ache album is one of those personal classic albums for me. I really enjoyed that whole urban country craze that happened in 1980 since it became more difficult for me to find disco releases at that time.

Anyone remember Slow Dancin' (Don't Turn Me On) by the Addrissi Brothers? That song always confused me...didn't think it was really disco although the 7" single had an extended version on the b-side. It was a bit like something the Bellamy Brothers would do but strangely on the Buddah label...a little bit funky and a little bit country.

And here's another one....Living Next Door To Alice by Smokie! Love that one and I know...who the $*%@ is Alice?!

Mr. KICKS; just too late for the disco scene, yeah I'm sure that sucked but, some consolation for you lies in that I'm 10 years younger. Hell, at least you were older and can remember much more of the daily happenings. I've got childhood memories; which are better than nothing.

O.K., don't know the songs you asked if anyone knew, even though I'm well versed in the early 80s 'urban cowboy craze'. I'm thrilled to hear you know the tracks I mentioned though. It's funny; I've always been a Ronnie Milsap fan, in fact my X wife was such a huge fan she toured around with him and even dated his son (back in the day before we met). This guy has got so many good songs I couldnt sit here and list em all. ON ANOTHER NOTE THOUGH, where in Canada are you from? I know that around Calgary country would be popular; you mentioned your parents kinda got you into it. This is interesting because it kinda gears me into the inside of Canada wondering if there are other areas that are country music friendly.
NOT THAT IT MATTERS TODAY, since I loathe Modern Country music (as we have discussed and agree upon). Randy Travis was 'the breaking point' as I look back (considering 'slick country'). I do love George Straits hits (he's been called the tradional country return man); but I really do feel the later years of the 80s (especially 88-89) were getting way too redneck for me.

Billy72, having grown up in Calgary I can attest that yes, country music was and still is very big there. Southern Alberta is very much like Texas and those good old Canadian cowboys and country boys love their country music - American and homegrown Canadian. I remember listening to artists like Lynn Anderson, Crystal Gayle, Freddy Fender, Tom T Hall, Tammy Wynette and others during the mid to late 1970's as my mum use to listen to a local country station all the time. Myself, I kind of grew out of country when I discovered disco, soul, r&b etc and didn't really get back into it again until the early 1990's.

For me, besides Disco, I was into Rock and Glam :icon_eek:, especially:

    Heart: "Magic Man"

I like the Scaramouche thing but "Killer Queen" is still my fave from Queen

I was also a big fan of Mud: "The Cat Crept In"

    The Sweet: "Ballroom Blitz"

Status Quo: "Down Down" Love that 1!

Suzi Quatro: "Can The Can" I had a crush on her!

Steve Miller: "Fly Like An Eagle"

And maybe the best of the 70's:

    Led Zeppelin: "Travelling Riverside Blues"

    And so many, many others!

Re: Your Favorite tracks, artists, albums 'in the Disco era' that WERE NOT disco

HEY THERE CBN! Yeah, I kinda figured Calgary was Cowboy country from the Rodeo's I've watched which featured alot from the area (thats how I knew). I dont dress cowboy myself, buy when nothing else is on T.V. (from time to time) I love to watch Bullriding etc. Didnt realize southern Alberta was like Texas though (in that it is Real Cowboy). So country music was loud and proud in your raising at home. Yeah, I do like the artists you mention (George and Tammy etc). I'm not into the TWANGY country sound, and the late 60s through mid 80s is the era I love (only). However, there are artists from 'the era' I love that I still 'turn the station' when they come on (pretty much the REDNECK stuff, like Hank Jr., nothing wrong with him, just not my style). I REALLY LOVE THAT ERA because it incorporated so much pop influence. I'll give you a early 70s example; Cal Smith "Hello Country Bumpkin", there were strings in that one etc. Also I think Jim Reeves (which I'm sure you heard plenty of) kinda started that 'slick' sound (BTW, I do love his tunes). One last thing, I do like some country from that era that was 'considered kinda redneck' like Willie and Waylon (awesome), just not so twangy. NOWADAYS, country turns me off due to the STRONG right wing (George Bush lovin) stance; not that I'm a liberal, just have a problem with Republicans in our nation (Dems arent much better actually; its all CORPORATE money feenin B.S.). Unlike CANADA, where you guys have Decriminalized pot, and even allow Industrial Hemp production; a strong support for THE FARMER. Both cases Willie Nelson has taken to task in word and support.

SORRY for the OFF TOPIC discourse yall, just interesting too me. BTW BOB, you didnt get into alot of SLICK COUNTRY from the late 70s early 80s like Milsap, Anne Murray, you did mention Crystal (which was her era)?

THANKS FOR THE OTHER POSTS guys; I see yall were also into NEW WAVE or GLAM during that period. Of the ones mentioned I do like Queen, and ofcourse BOWIE. I really dig his ZIGGY years, and like his music through the early 80s. NOWADAYS, little to European Techno for my tastes. ROXY MUSIC were talented, I dont know alot of their songs (a few; like "It must be love"), but I do know they were a huge influence on bands I loved in the early 80s like Duran Duran.
