    VH1 is doing a disco special (12/17/2007)

"Greatest Disco Hits". Pretty mainstream stuff, but do you think they're trying to return disco to its former popularity?

I think it's more of a Homage to Disco ,and as much as anyone tried they cold NEVER return it to it's former popularity"especially to the younger VH1 Viewers"..
Plus the music they will play wont do the genre justice I'm quite certain..No Ceronne,Costandinos,Midney , Salsoul delights like Loleatta etc,or West end records will be featured.. ..But probably the YMCA,Last Dance,Boogie Oggie Oogie, Funkytown , Kc & the Sunshine band common fare as you mentioned will be featured.
but It's worth a watch.. we might be surprized.

I agree with everything Danya said.

I use to watch the "behind the music" specials (back in the late 90s-2000 or so), and I did learn some cool things about the artists (or genres of music like the Studio 54 behind the music); but mostly I just enjoyed the footage of the artist or era (interview snippets etc.).

However, I really can't stand watching these VH1 shows (or anything like it) anymore; it seems they always try to build a case that "IT WAS THE DRUGS that took em down"; a typical rock star story ofcourse, which they use as A PLUG for the BIGGEST corporate American BRAINWASHING scam ever, the drug war.

No offense lol, just wanted to mention that.

I'd be interested in seeing this special but sadly we don't get VH1 up here. If someone on the board does watch this, can they post a bit of feedback/review for those of us who aren't able to see it? Cheers. :icon_biggrin:

These specials are all cut from the same cloth. They would never bother to spotlight the artists Dayna mentioned because they were too "underground" for the mass public. Still, I miss the days when VH-1 did their specialty '70s programming; especially when they aired the American Bandstand shows and 8-Track Flashback, which I sorely miss.

I agree; if they're going to cover disco, they'd better cover not only the popular artists of that era, but also the unpopular and underground artists, who in my mind were more popular and sounded better than the popular ones.

They will never recapture the glory of the disco era or return it to it's former popularity, this will never happen; that was a different age and a different time. What they can and should do is give disco it's rightful acknowledgement in musical annals, and return it to the mainstream as an available music art form with the historic part of it intact and available for access so all will be aware and know of not only the music, but the era, times, and experience in and of themselves.

Let's face it, disco was supposedly snuffed out and killed before its time. In addition, it was buried and left for dead permanently. However, unbeknownst to the ones that staged the murder, It (disco) never died but pulled off a fake death and rightfully so. How can you kill something that was so popular, and that affected the whole world?

    Long live disco!

Well, sounding like the 70s liberal I am, this has been the "establishment" agenda for every generation it seems for the last 50/60 years.
"Valley Of the Dolls" had that said theme to counter the 60s culture.
    Anyway, **** 'em.
