It's been all over the radio news here in the UK this morning.
Tina's very brief official statement says a lot.
“Tina hasn’t had any contact with Ike in 35 years. No further comment will be made.”
It's a shame Ike's personal life overshadowed his musical one.
He was due to play in London in April.
R.I.P. Ike
what a year....so true like december is the fatidic month
Tina left Ike in 1976, so that statement sounds a bit wrong.
Ike was a very important piece in the evolution of both soul (discovering Tina's voice and blending it with his rough R&B style) and rock music (his recording of "Rocket 88" with the first distorted guitar ever). He was also a tough guy and a confessed cocaine addict (like many others in 70's show business). Sadly Tina's self-biography book, while a moving and caring testimony, helped to bury his music.
Recently I found a DVD of the 1971 concert film SOUL TO SOUL, in which they appear together. I recommend it to soul fans, not only for the performances and the film itself, but also because it has like 6 different commentary tracks with different musicians (not Tina, but Ike, Mavis Staples and plenty of others). So you can see the film again from time to time with a different commentary, which is amazing: you never get bored.
It don't mean a thing (if ain't got that swing)
Ike's obituary on Rolling Stone:

It don't mean a thing (if ain't got that swing)
It's worth remembering what a huge dance record 'Nutbush City Limits' was. It's pre any Disco charts I suppose.
