BEFORE the british invasion (New wave sound) came through, with "Human League", "Duran Duran" etc.
Yes, after the disco backlash in mid-79, U.S. record labels really curtailed their disco output...so the main source of dance music from the U.S. was the black urban stuff from S.O.S. Band, (Tabu) Shalamar and The Whispers (Solar) and Quincy Jones productions (Qwest) and the NYC independent labels: many from West End, Prelude, a few from Vanguard (Roni Griffith)...and lotsa imported & acquired European and Canadian records that still were working the dancefloor market that major U.S. record companies had stopped servicing.
ALSO, I am going to list some early 80s R & B songs that I love. I know the year that SOME of these came out, BUT IF I QUESTION MARK THEM and YOU KNOW the year that any of the songs came out I'D LOVE it if you'd tell me. I love to keep up with the years of songs, but I dont have a Billboard R & B History of Hits yet. I do have Billboard top 40 hits 55-99; and I've worn it out lol.
1. Luther Vandross "Never too much" 1981 (Gaud, this song is the bomb. I never dug his slow stuff too much, but this has THE GROOVE)!
2. Change "Paradise" 1980 I believe?
1981
3. Grace Jones "Pull up to my bumper" YEAR? (WOW, this song puts it straight foward; love it. I'm guessing around 1980)?
1981
4. Evelyn Champaign King "I'm in Love" YEAR? (I love this song. What was sooo good about this disco/r & b early 80s stuff was not ONLY the music but the SOARING vocals).
1981
5. Vaugn Mason Crew "Bounce Skate Rock Roll" YEAR? (definately a funk song, I'm guessing 1980 or early 81? He refers to disco more than once in the track).
1979--charted early 1980
6. Val Young "If you should ever be lonely" YEAR? (I like this one, it kinda puts you in a trance).
1986
7. Jocelyn Brown "Somebody Else's Guy" (Gaud, this song is the bomb, just like "Im in Love", soaring vocals)!
1984
8. "I want to thank you (heavenly father)" I DONT KNOW who sings this one, or what year? I've heard it many times. Good song, with a HOUSE groove.
Alicia Myers "I Want to Thank You" (1981)--was a vocalist with Al Hudson & the Partners, later known as One Way...listen to her wail on "You Can Do It" by Al Hudson & The Partners from 1979!!!
9. Loleatta Holloway "Love Sensation" 1980 (ONCE again like Jocelyn and Evelyn King's track THIS SONG IS IT! Still disco OFCOURSE 1980, VOCALS through the roof!
There are more, but this is more than enough; THANKS!
ANYBODY else use to WATCH SOUL TRAIN back in the early 80s? Man, DON CORNELIUS was the coolest.[/quote]
