I've been giving this new acquisition of mine several plays and just wonder if anyone else has any thoughts or input about this artist or this particular project from 1977 ??

I'm not that familiar with her but didn't she do a version of "Casanova"?

    Re: Ruby Andrews GENUINE RUBY

Ruby came over to the UK a few years back to perform at one of the "Togetherness" Soul Weekenders. She was lovely and surprisingly nervous about performing. From memory, it was the same weekend we had the late Willie Hutch performing because I'm sure we all went out to dinner together.

I'm pretty sure Ruby did the original version of 'Cassanova', Skoots..the same song Loleatta and Coffee covered.
Her song "I Got A Bone To Pick With You' is something that gets/got played on the Northern Soul scene.

Yes it was Motown's famed keyboardist Earl Van Dyke's presence that really made me take notice.

About a couple of the cuts on Ruby's album :

    QUEEN OF THE DISCO
.... a nice classically early-sound disco song ...severely hampered by extremely lame lyrics .... so bad, I thought at first ... but they have since grown on me to become sort of charming. A pop disco song deserving of success.

The storyline here is about a girl who goes to the "disco ball" with her boyfriend and gets dumped when he goes off with someone who can dance . Then she practices her moves and comes back to become .. herself : the queen of the disco ... and of course thereupon rebuffs her former boyfriend's renewed advances.

I didn't care about a dance at all
Until my baby took me to a disco ball
Everyone was sharp as they could be :
They were really on a boogie spree. uh-huh
On the floor , a crowd had gathered around
A fine young lady who was getting down.
Before I had asked 'who was she'
.... That disco lady took took my baby from me :icon_lol:

females coo : She's the queen of the dis-co

RUBY : Watch her go ,go, go. goooo ,

Song ends with her giving a celebratory somewhat Lady Bump type disco queen championing "ahhhhhhh"
(Also this is probably the only other song to make a reference to a disco duck)

I WANNA BE NEAR YOU is another disco cut ...with strong shades of that bitter sweet Van McCoy style ...flutes and high hats and chimes and xylophone . Busy drumming .... .

I've mentioned elsewhere the 5:23 cover here of Sam Cooke's A CHANGE IS GONNA COME . This is a great traditionally performed rendition .... maybe a little Mavis Staples sounding .... until its surprise ending .... worth investigating for disco buffs . ...

Vocally Ruby Andrews often reminds me of Jackie Moore.

Nice strings from the Detroit Symphony Orchestra.

A surprise, Remicks? I do apologise. I didn't realise it was your thread.
I hope I haven't offended you. You spelled my name wrong by the way. :icon_biggrin:

There was a great interview with Ruby in the August 2003 issue of 'Manifesto' magazine. It says she first recorded under her original name of Ruby Stackhouse and changed her name as she was a fan of...Julie Andrews !

Why should I be offended that you find my posts worthy of your "higher standards" for participation?? :icon_confused: It goes contrary to your public assault on me though :icon_confused: :icon_confused: :icon_confused:.... so I guess that was just a lot of hostile horse ****. As long as you behave Simon, you are welcome on any of my threads that you find make the grade. I'll do my best, but I'll apologize ahead of time for the ones I'm sure won't qualify.

remicks, I'm genuinely concerned for your blood pressure and puzzled by the very aggressive nature of this post. I have clearly offended you. All I'm doing is contributing to this thread about Ruby Andrews, which is of interest to me as a member of the forum.
Which "public assault" are you talking about? I haven't mentioned your name at all in connection with my resignation so that can't be it.
I on the other hand have been publicly assaulted by YOU, remicks, by QUINNY and your bosom buddy MARKYFEDAD.

Why are you putting "higher standards" as a quote? Has someone said that ?

    "Hostile horse s**t" ?? Tut tut !

I suggest you calm down and get a grip before you have a heart attack. Go and listen to some nice calming music.

Back on topic, I've just found a CDR of the interview Ruby did with Kev Roberts on UK radio in 2003, so I'm going to listen to that this evening.
I've posted a scan of the UK issue of 'Ive Got a Bone To Pick With You' which should go up soon.

    Everyone,

This thread is now reopened and I am going to demand that EVERYONE behave and stay on topic and no flaming. Marky and Remicks I realize the two of you were unfairly attacked by Simon, who I just banned for one month, but I ask that you let this drop so we can all get back to normal. Thanks.

Yo... not to revive this thread, but I would love to know anything else in regards to this album. Especially her reason for entry to disco and why she did not produce subsequent similar albums.

    Oh good .

This extremely interesting 70's interpretation by Ruby of A CHANGE IS GONNA COME is on youtube.

I remember when first playing it , being shocked by its unexpected ending.

    Origins

    Upon hearing
Bob Dylan's "Blowin' in the Wind" in 1963, Sam Cooke was greatly moved that such a poignant song about racism in America could come from someone who was not black[1]. While on tour in May 1963, and after speaking with sit-in demonstrators in Durham, North Carolina following a concert, Cooke returned to his tour bus and wrote the first draft of what would become "A Change Is Gonna Come". The song also reflected much of Cooke's own inner turmoil. Known for his polished image and light-hearted songs such as "You Send Me" and "Twistin' the Night Away", he had long felt the need to address the situation of discrimination and racism in America, especially the southern states. However, his image and fears of losing his largely white fan base prevented him from doing so.

The song, very much a departure for Cooke, reflected two major incidents in his life. The first was the death of Cooke's 18-month-old son, Vincent, who died of an accidental drowning in June of that year. The second major incident came on October 8, 1963, when Cooke and his band tried to register at a "whites only" motel in Shreveport, Louisiana and were summarily arrested for disturbing the peace. Both incidents are represented in the weary tone and lyrics of the piece, especially the final verse: There have been times that I thought I couldn't last for long/but now I think I'm able to carry on/It's been a long time coming, but I know a change is gonna come.
What do you think of this treatment of this somber song?

    Appropriate?
    Disrespectful??

    What say you ????
