DON'T LEAVE ME THIS WAY wasn't Motown's first Gamble and Huff cover

    *****

In 1967 Gamble & Huff w/ Jerry Ross wrote and produced a song for Dionne Warwick's little sister Dee Dee called I'M GONNA MAKE YOU LOVE ME which stalled at a forgetful #88 on the Billboard Hot 100 .

A year later Motown took the song and took it into the studio to be reworked by a virtual who's who of future disco participants :

Diana Ross , The Supremes AND The Temptations would all perform the song as arranged and produced by Frank Wilson and Nick Ashford.

This magic combination of talent took the Gamble & Huff song all the way to #2 on both Billboard's HOT 100 and Soul charts .

Re: DON'T LEAVE ME THIS WAY wasn't Motown's first Gamble and Huff song rescue

Don't forget that Madeline Bell had a moderate hit with "I'm Gonna Make You Love Me" prior to the Supremes & Temps duet. Miss Bell first charted 3/9/68 & took her version to #26 Pop and #32 Soul. Bell's was the version I knew first...the Supremes & Temps did their cover duet on their joint TV special in the late fall/ early winter of 1968......"T.C.B" ['Takin' Care of Business"]; it first charted 12/14/68...going all the way to #2 on BOTH the Pop & Soul charts.

Madeline Bell is a black vocalist, originally from New Jersey, who went to England to perform. After her solo hit with "IGMYLM"--she was a famed session singer who sang the stunning, soulful vocals on Space's "Carry On, Turn Me On" & "My Love Is Music" & "Save Your Love For Me"; and background vocals on Munich Machine's "Get On The Funk Train" and also sang on Costandinos tracks, etc., etc., etc......

    Oh just shut me up!!!

Ah the lovely Wikepedia...(re)writing the history of the world before our very eyes !

What a great song though Remicks.
A bunch of us were privileged to meet Mr Ross in New Jersey last year. What a nice man.
There's an interview with him here -

    Jerry Ross

A year later Motown salvaged the song and took it into the studio to be reworked by a virtual who's who of future disco participants :

Diana ( THE BOSS) Ross , The (YOU'RE MY DRIVING WHEEL) Supremes AND The (GLASS HOUSE) Temptations would all perform the song as arranged and produced by Frank (BOOGIE DOWN) Wilson and Nick (FOUND A CURE) Ashford.

This magic combination of talent took the formally bypassed Gamble & Huff song all the way to #2 on both Billboard's HOT 100 and Soul charts .

The song marks Motown's FIRST big hit single that was a cover of a non-in-house Motown song.

(It was preceded by a Four Top's cover of IF I WERE A CARPENTER which reached #20 on the Hot 100.)

Madeline Bell is a black vocalist, originally from New Jersey, who went to England and was the "Jill" in the group Four Jacks & A Jill [ remember their U.S. hit "Master Jack"??? "It's a strange, strange world you/we(?) live in, Master Jack"] After her solo hit with "IGMYLM"--she was a famed session singer who sang the stunning, soulful vocals on Space's "Carry On, Turn Me On" & "My Love Is Music" & "Save Your Love For Me"; and background vocals on Munich Machine's "Get On The Funk Train" and also sang on Costandinos tracks, etc., etc., etc......

Not at all ! Your info is ten times more interesting !
I love her voice on CARRY ON TURN ME ON ... it makes the song work.

And as for SAVE YOUR LOVE FOR ME ...it is THE disco song I can't just randomly listen to. That voice (who I now know to be Madeline Bell ) on that song makes me too sad to bear :icon_redface::icon_cry:

hmmmm...AMG said she was "Jill" in the group Four Jacks & a Jill--but my Whitburn book says it was another singer from South Africa..Glenys Lynne...unless there were 2 groups with that name and I'm thinking of the hit by the other one?????

Yeah that must be it...cuz "Master Jack" didn't sound like Madeline Bell...it was a twee Seekers folkie ladies voice...

    Sorry. :icon_rolleyes::icon_redface:

I'm wracking my brains now, but I'm pretty sure Mr Ross told us that the first version of the song was by Jay & The Techniques.

well it gets difficult referencing this stuff ....
although wikipedia includes "HUFF" as part of the equation of who created the Dee Dee Warwick song/record ... the label sure doesn't ...which I take to be Simon's point ......

the challenge of unraveling it all is part of the fun here .....

Hmmm...I wonder if that Dee Dee Warwick track has the same backing track as the Brothers Of Hope single. They did an instrumental cover version, and were essentially MFSB (earl, ronald, norman,etc...)

Showing my ignorance here, I didn't realize Dionne Warwick had a sister who sang. :icon_surprised: Wow! I'll have to check her out on the net. Does she still sing? Is she still alive today? Did she record for very long and have many hits?

    .

    .

Dee Dee's Mercury/Blue Rock and Atco sessions have been compiled onto CD and are among the best 60's soul has to offer. However both of those high quality compilations are now quite tough too find.
