For Grace Jones music, the Tom Moulton stuff is the only LPs of hers I have and listen to. That's a great track that you've posted.

Here's another guy who went to the philly producers for an LP. I think it was Thom Bell this time. I just found out about the LP, which is the same title as this track. It was from '73 on CBS. I don't know if there were any uptempo dance tracks on the record.

Here's another that finally made it to youtube. This was the follow-up to We're On The Right Track, also on the Wand label. The flip side didn't have the instrumental version, which Right Track did. Instead it had a vocal performance by Major Harris called Saddest Smile In Town, a ballad credited to Major Harris with Ultra High Frequency.

Here's another philly production, this one being a bit more unusual. The whole production team appears to be from France, but they used the Sigma guys on the first side of the Karen Cheryl LP. Here's one of the tunes. While the music wasn't written with those philly jazz chords in mind, the style is clearly philly, with the sigma sweethearts singing backing vocals.

I think this track from the follow-up LP also was recorded in philadelphia. The LP credits indicate some philly musicians were used, but it doesn't specify who or on what tracks.

And here's another one from the same follow-up record, but I'm not 100% sure it's all philly. I just thought the customized video was cute, and the track is pretty good.

I'm surprised it didn't get mentioned. I thought I had, oh well. But it is a good record. The track was included on one of the Creme De La Creme CD compilations of philly tracks produced for Atlantic/Warner group of labels.

Oh boy: this my type of post. It ain`t no secret that I`m a Earl Young fan. All this info. is going to take a while to digest. I wasn`t aware Chuck Brown recorded at 212 North 12th.

Re: To Philly or Not To Philly

I`m curious about the horn section (Philly). Does anybody know who that was on trumpet and trombone on "I`ll Always Love My Mama" (Tom Moulton`s mix of course!) My guess is that it`s Rick Genovese and Rico Bene!

Thanks fellas for have such a good forum!

I don't know who played the brass on that Intruders cut, I'd be surprised if Bobby Eli even remembered that! Only Zach Zachary is the one who stands out for me when he plays the sax solos.

Here's another philly track, this one on the Chess label.

It sounds like Black Ivory without Leroy Burgess doing an Eddie Kendricks imitation.

Concerning the Black Ivory record: Your right Vince really put it down here. This record is just waiting for a Gibbons or Moulton to remix it.

If the multi-track master tapes still exist. They recorded this at a different studio, not at Sigma. If that studio went out of business, I don't know if the masters transferred to Sigma or if they went elsewhere.

If you like philly remixes, check out the new Dimitri From Paris CD compilation called Get Down With The Philly Sound. He did some nice remixes from the original tapes of tracks like The Love I Lost, You Can't Hide From Yourself, and Hurt So Bad. There's a 2 CD set kicking around from most retailers, but keep an eye out for the 3 disc Japanese version. Discogs has the listing for that one if you want to see if it's worth investing in. And Tom Moulton has a CD coming out of remixes he did of Philly Groove label tracks called Philly Re-Grooved. I'm not sure the release date for that one.

This Norman Harris production with the same artist that recorded Big Stone Wall back in '73 on Philly Groove was released on Capitol records. I've only seen the 45 version, no 12 inch mix.

Chicago's Dells recorded a couple of LPs with philly producer Norman Harris. This was off their second record with him, They Said It Couldn't Be Done.

Someone put the original recording of Getting Together, which as far as I know, was never released. It was on a CD from the UK. Compare it to the version with David Morris vocals, they use the same backing tracks, but they added tom drums to the thicken the snare drum hits on the David Morris re-recording.
