and what was spinned besides Meco and Joe Bataan? Miss Aicha presented fantastic euro acts such as Babylone and Macadam, Miss Anna S programmed Teddy Pendergrass and totally obscure Brazilian and African disco stuff, and yours truly played things like the ultra-grandiose Columbia suite by Sir Alec's The Syncophonic Orchestra and a disco medley of southern Italian folk dances.

The music is great, the DJ is strutting her stuff but I'm not so charmed by the deco and lightsystem. The projection gimmick is a little bit cold IMO.

Deco? Lightsystem? At the Bongo there is just an empty space with some chairs, no deco of any sort and the lightsystem consists mainly of candles. We're not into too many flashing lights really. If you've got to dress a space it's got to be either total minimalism or excessive maximalism, nothing in between, non? So, if you can't be bothered to start working on the space at 8 in the morning why not decorate with a couple of lights placed low to cast shadows of dancing bodies on the walls. Smoke machines? Never, and absolutely no strobes. The music could have been enough but we decided on a team of vjs - the stuff shown in the vids wasn't the best of what they had to offer which was pretty good in fact much of the time, not the too obvious campy material that happened when the vids were shot. The vjs were supposed to go into appropriate material for each musical sequence but that did not always happen. For Star Wars, Playback's Space Invaders and Syncophonic Ork's Columbia Suite, they should have launched into something cosmic of course. We got the Bollywood moves during the Sitar disco moments but the sight of insects shagging sure didn't complement Costandinos. And no more of those disco-for-aunts-and-uncles-demos please.

And naturally, they absolutely should have shot Aicha spinning, she was The Star, and I need to be seen playing for more than 2 seconds as well !!:-)

Incidentally, though the dancers screamed for more more MORE!!! the night was the last one we'll be having at that particular space in that town - we're taking the club to the capital of Helsinki.
