I quite often prefer instrumental tracks to vocal ones. Two I really really like are MFSB's 'Mysteries of The world' & Katmandu's 'The Break'.

Always played instrumental over vocal versions in those years.
In a recent set where I played with another former dj friend I played all instrumentals:

EMPRESS Dying to be dancing (listen to the bass!!)
ROZALYN WOODS: Whatcha gonna do about it
SHARON BROWN: I specialize in love
LOVE UNLIMITED: Hey look at me I'm in love (33 +6% pitch instead of 45!!!)
LOVE DE LUXE: Here comes that sound again (LP version second half)
DAN HARTMAN: Vertigo/Relight... (progressive instrumental remix)
CELI BEE: Fly me on the wings of love (second movement)
    GREGG DIAMOND: Arista Vista
RISCO CONNECTIONS: Ain't no stoppin' us now (version)
D TRAIN: Trying to get over
    CHIC: Good times (break)
V MASON & CREW: Bounce rock skate roll (Part 2)
SYLVESTER: I need somebody to love tonight (italian only 12")
MARTA ACUNA: Dance dance dance (from break on)
KC SUNSHINE BAND: Black water gold
RICHIE HAVENS: Going back to my roots (intro only loop)
ORLANDO JOHNSON: Turn the music on

and many others I can't remember now

    Giovanni,

The list is just... OUTRAGEOUS but D-Train is THE JOINT. 8) Glad to see others were also into instrumental versions. How about:

    Hot Wax - Denis LePage
    Rise; Rotation - Herb Alpert
    Whistle Bump - Deodato
    War Dance - Kebekelektrik
    City, Country, City - War
Tale of Three Cities; Magic Bird of Fire; 212 N. 12th - Salsoul Orchestra
Sun After the Rain - Salsoul Strings
Pursuit of The Pimpmobile - Isaac Hayes

    and, of course...

The gems by Love Unlimited Orchestra:

    My Sweet Summer Suite
    Rhapsody in White
    Love's Theme
    Satin Soul
    Theme from "King Kong"
Let the Music Play (instrumental version)
    Barry's Theme 8)
    What a Groove 8)

    D-Train is THE JOINT

The Francois K dub is one of the masterpieces in the history of disco, even if later in the years.

Guys, we could go on for hours playing only instrumentals.
Disco IS instrumental, the voice and the lyrics being used as an instrument to complete the melody

Aaah - D-Train. Finally we got to talk about one of my all time favorite artists. The Eaves / Williams duo may not be underestimated.
I quite like what Francois Kevorkian did to the track, allthough it is not my favorite D-Train Song.
I Like the underrated "In your eyes" from 88 better. (yeah, I know it's not an instrumental on the album - but still)

Actually, James Williams never went away after that 1988 album. He' s been doing a lot of backround vocals for jazzman Donald Harrison (among others). In 2000 he did front two outstanding house influenced track for french producer Bob Sinclar.
Good to know he's still around :)

The cut is from the movie soundtrack, Truck Turner, a nine+ minute gem that just rocks. This is one of the first pieces of music I remember hearing where the 'breakdown' near the end actually stops the flow of the dance. I still remember the comment from Frankie Knuckles when Nicky Siano first played this, talking about the crowd and the break: "They don't know what to do with this." They learned... fast. :D

If you can't find the vinyl, this was on a CD titled Double Feature which also had the soundtrack to Two Tough Guys.

This is one of my favorite disco tracks and I agree with you the bass is outstanding. Now, you're talking about a full instrumental version? Is this in the B-side of the 12'? I liked the 12' over the LP version, but don't remember what was on the B-side.

    Yes Nano,

I have both releases (LP and 12"), the only difference being the dynamics of the sound, better in the 12" of course.
My 12" is a promo release and has the instrumental on the flip, but I am quite sure that also the commercial one has the instrumental version.
By the way there are some Prelude 12" that have great instrumentals only on the promo issue (STRIKERS: Inch by inch, LAX: All my love, for example)

Funny... we've discussed Disco instrumentals for so long and totally forgotten about the biggest instrumental disco hit of all time:

The Hustle by Van McCoy. (1975) :) (originally on the "Disco Baby" album)

He also made a another instrumental named "Two Points". I don't think that one was a hit but in my opinion, it's a better track than "The Hustle"

You'll find it on McCoys "My Favorite Fantasy Album" (MCA 1979) - the last before he passed away.

I can't begin to tell you how much I disliked this song. That flute had my skin crawling. But, you're right, it was HUGE.
