    More like Jamiroquai?

To me, the closest thing to real disco nowadays is Jamiroquai. Real instrumentation (for the most part, but the synths are mostly tasteful), Rhodes piano, strings, REAL DRUMS and BASS!

Can anyone recommend any other artists who approach this style today? I'm looking for organic groove, here...

hehe that's why i'm fan of Jamiroquai.
I guess there should be other acid jazz bands doin some new disco but don't know who :icon_confused:.

And of course i have to recomend you Fundación Tony Manero, not only because they're from my city hehehe, i think they're actually the only band dedicated to disco-funk. They have improved a lot through all this years but my favourite album is Looking for la fiesta (really made like original disco! don't you think?).
If you don't like it maybe you'll do with Los Amigos Invisibles. Theeese are a Venezuela band so they put some latin vibe in it which i think it's awesome. Check their Arepa 3000 album, I think you'll like it.

Theese 2 bands sings both in english and spanish. I wish i could help you more but this is the only that came to my mind right now.
There was already a Thread about this http://www.discomusic.com/forums/var...sic-today.html

tell us if you find another band doin disco nowadays.

How about the Brand New Heavies? Do they count?

Personally, I've never liked these retro-sounding bands. I especially hate it when I buy a CD thinking it's all oldies because of the way it's packaged, and its really groups recording in the last few years but trying to sound old. Unless you're sampling some old stuff, it's better to leave that old sound back in the past and try to move ahead with a new sound. People who have no idea what the oldies sounded like might think 'hey, these guys are really cool and inventive' when really they're just redoing what was already done three decades ago.

Anyway, that's my little rant on the retro-wannabes.. :)

    hahahahahaha
i seeee! you don't like any "funk" music made nowadays?
well i consider it acid jazz, not exactly disco or funk, and i like it more the more similar the music (or at least the vibe) is to the old one. I like it totally apart of the music from that time.

Sorry, i'm surprised by your radical opinion about theese artists hahahaha but yeah! all other points of view are always welcome!!!:icon_rolleyes:

Sharon Jones and the Dap Kings????? lol ( I saw her live though and....She's awesome)

I like Jamiroquai, even if he's a total Dan Hartman ripoff. Hell, I like Dan Hartman so, it makes sense. BTW I live in a self imposed cave sometimes so I only learned Jamiroquai is white about a year ago.lol

Back on topic....Uh....My music knowledge pretty much stops at 1985, so I'm no help.

I couldn't agree more with those sentiments. I would never buy any of Jamiroquai's albums, even though I think their well executed. As I have loads of original disco LPs, it would be pointless. And I like to think I know a little eeny-weeny bit about the origins of certain types of music, to not be taken into believing groups like Jamiroquai are special. One of their first singles, 'Too Young To Die', 'borrowed' heavily from Johnny Hammond. Bands like Codury and BNH were heralded in the '90s as Acid Jazzers and New Mods, producing cool music everyone should be into. But most of them didn't fulfil expectations, and would struggle to sell out a venue larger than Ronny Scott's these days :icon_lol:.

I know that Jamiroquai & Brand New Heavies were ripping off 70s funk/disco acts like Pleasure & Roy Ayers but I for one was more than happy to have them in the charts & on the radio in the 90s when the only other things on offer were derivative rock such as Oasis & Blur, talentless boybands & computer-driven mindless techno & rap; at least it was good music.

I have to agree with Sandy on this, a part of the reasons why there is such a resurgence of interest in the music of the 60's & 70's is definitely due to bands/groups like these that brought awareness to the younger generations and swayed some from all the soulness, electronic, shallow lyriced, mass distributed junk of the 90's to a different experience & with all the older generations constantly cramming it down their thoats about how "there just ripping off, P-Funk, E.W.& F, Gap Band, Slave, Cerrone, etc. etc."(and yes I was among those outing the "New Jacks") what choice did they have but to seek out the "origins" and give respect, where respect was due....:icon_biggrin:

Now you have 20yr old DJ's asking "who made that song Love Thang?" What could be more invigorating than that....

    Re: More like Jamiroquai?

I agree; his music and his band's music is the closest thing to our beloved "DISCO." He must've remembered the sound cause he was born in 1969 I believe, thus, he would have been a child throughout the disco era.

It is possible that he ripped off prominent artists, i.e. funk/disco/soul from the 70's and before, but it could also be possible that as a child he loved this type music, it was ingrained in his soul, and when the opportunity presented itself, decided to compose and perform it.

His sound is truly reminiscent of the entire disco era up until about 1981.

I was watching the "Sundance" Channel during the weekend and they featured him and my jaw dropped; this was the first time I had ever heard him and his band perform. I am now a fan and will closely follow this disco/funk/soul/jazz icon (in which disco had a little of all of those genres within its structure).

He can also dance (not like we did) but he quite good at doing his own thing to "mellinium disco."

Here's some juicy samplings from "YOUTUBE:"

I agree with the last few comments as well, which is why I started this thread in the first place.

    Rip-off? I disagree. I prefer "homage" instead.

He is keeping the music alive. I have hundreds of albums and CDs by the artists he is "ripping off", but I'd rather hear some new stuff with a similar sound signature for a change.

To get this thread back on track, if there are any other suggestions not already mentioned, please list them. I'll be hitting Rhapsody and the "internets" shortly...

Joey Negro aka Dave Lee is always a reliable source of quality 'new disco'. Check out his Z Records site. Also the Defected record label has lots of this type of music on it's roster too.

James Taylor Quartet also has some good stuff. I know they are considered "acid jazz", but they do a lot of good dance music, IMO.

And I agree about Joey Negro. I always look for his productions and remixes.

Hey RobbaDobba - I luv Jamiroquai too! I've become very immersed in the artist albums Tiesto, Paul Oakenfold and Paul Van Dyk have been releasing. Together with Jamiroquai's very smooth 21st century disco-funk grooves, the thumpah-thumpah tracks Dannii Minogue does and the slick pop disco of Kylie, I increasingly find myself less and less interested in my old stuff. I have like 1000 records, mostly disco and early 80's neo-disco and they are getting dustier and dustier because much of today's music just sounds better to me. Of course there is lots of total shlock out there today too, but there was lots of that back-in-the-day also.
