Ms. Dayna, again you turned the stove on, cooked 10 entrees at once, baked 10 cakes, and served them all flawlessly. What an interview; I was yearning for more!

Loleatta should pull a "Martha Wash" on these people if she knows matter of factly that her voice is on a work, and as per contract, she was supposed to be paid and was never paid. She's probably got millions laying out there to claim.

You must have legal representation before laying vocals on anything and put these idiots to contract; you can't trust verbal commitments anymore, not none not any!

I love Loleatta Holloway; hope we hear more from her as the years dawn on. Thank you Loleatta and thank you Ms. Dayna for another flawless interview.

Another fine offering by the House of Dayna.

Very interesting when Miss Holloway talks about the people she worked with and surprising how modest she is about her voice!

Dayna, thx again and especially for always giving the members here the opportunity to ask questions.

BTW, I believe your next one is with Alec R. Costandinos LOL!

Thanks everyone..I always manage to squeeze out the juice..hehe,I hate injustice and wish I could do more
but when Loleatta said most people dont care ,unfortunately she was correct.
One step at a time..OH and Johan, was it mr Constandinos you wanted?..I have some surprizes in the works.
Thanks to everyone for their support..

Great interview and glad to see Loleatta hangin' in. Can't wait for her next productions. Nobody can scream like Loleatta... simply a legend and should no doubt be in the top ranks of the Disco Hall of Fame.

I was looking through my old tapes when I came across a piece of Arsenio Hall, and Marky Mark was doing Good Vibration. And surprise surprise, he actually had Loleatta Holloway doing the singing part, as opposed to just having her voice pre-recorded.

I found the clip on youtube. I think this would have been around '91 or '92

Wow; now that was hot Disco Funk; I don't remember that video piece; where was I? And Loleatta was just awesome singing that line over and over. Wonder how much she got paid for that and was she paid one time or got royalties from the record and performances until forever? Loleatta was 45 or 46 back then. And all of the discomusic.com forumers said...WOW!

I don't think she would have received royalties if she didn't write the song, but then again, I'm not sure. Maybe she negotiated something to get a portion of the profits? She definitely would have been paid a fee for appearing on Arsenio.

Did Mark Wahlberg tour with her? I never followed Marky Mark, except for the few tunes that played on the radio or videos. I recall two or three tracks coming out and that was it until he started doing movies.

I s'pose Dan Hartman would get the royalties as it samples 'Love Sensation'.

There are numerous Artists that don't write their own songs, but when they perform them, though they are not their songs, through contract relative to playtime, performances, etc., they still get a certain percentage until twelfth of never through the contractual agreement (if the record company and all other parties concerned agree); and of course you need a lawyer, or that's why you need a lawyer when signing a record contract...some Artists are young and know nothing about such agreements or what they need or want through the contract.

This is a mistake that Martha Wash, Loleatta Holloway, and others (old old school artists in the 50's and 60's) made because they did not have professional and correct legal representation before signing their contracts, and then, that's why most of those Artists got nothing except upfront payment and never received any royalties thereafter.

I think it might be a catch 22. If you don't have an established name or reputation, you aren't in a position to negotiate too intensely. They could just say 'sorry, we found someone else' if they don't like your lawyer's input. Or they could just be lazy about promoting your record and your career dies a quick death. On the other hand, if they think they can milk as much money out of you as they can, while paying you next to nothing, they might be more eager to promote you.

I wonder if race and financial status plays a factor when dealing with big record companies?

Good question. But during the Disco era and "way back when" (50's, 60's) there was quite a bit of money being thrown around, and, a lot of the artists did not know much about contracts, so I believe if the record companies could take them or had an opportunity to take them, they did and they would.

It's a shame but that did happen back then. I am not so sure though about the race card, but blacks did not know much at all about the industry, and I am sure if the record company could pay them the least while getting the most out of them and wringing them dry, they did.

I have never seen it before. My girl was KILLING it and lookin HOT~!!
I'm quite surprised they included her."of course I think she should have been included in every performance they ever did with this track" AND GOT PAID~!! But since that didn't happen I'm still delighted to see this little piece or redemption..

I know these interviews are infinitely more difficult to produce, than your finished-product would lead us to believe.

I imagine if you weren't well educated or your family didn't have a business background, you're probably going to be more likely to take what you can get than to think about the future and negotiating for a good contract. There may have been a lot of money being thrown around, and a bad record probably would have just turned into a sweet tax break for a record company, but I still think at the end of the day, the company's going to do whatever it can to get a deal in its favour. The only recourse I guess is for the artists to go on tour, or to write their own material and hope that someone big does a cover version so they can rake in the royalties.

My pleasure, Dayna. It just happened to be on some old tapes I was reviewing, but I was only half watching, doing other stuff at the same time. I looked and saw Loleatta singing, and thankfully it turned out someone had put it on Youtube as well. It was nice of Mark Wahlberg to use her instead of her sampled voice (which I completely forgot had been taken from Love Sensation - thanks SD for pointing that out).

    HELLO~!!
That's EXACTLY what happened to most of these wonderful ladies and it kills me..SO much off the record conversations I have had with the girls about them being young and naive and someone threw a check in they're faces that "at the time looked juicy"..Talents like Carol Douglas who I haven't spoken to in awhile because "bless her heart" she can't keep her phone on because she has been dismissed and forgotten by the people "she" made money for and the people she entertained and delighted~!! and when you try and get someone like her a decent gig you hear "we want a younger audience" " she won't bring in what we need" Doctors Orders or Midnight Love Affair aren't that well remembered:icon_eek:"and I REFUSE to insult an artist of her caliber by offrering a 300$ gig at a BBQ Shack and they do it trust me.
I won't go into what would be acceptable but it ceratinly isn't that.
Most old school Diva's best chance to grab a gig for somewhat there worth is during gay Pride week or any gay event or somewhere like Nick and Val's Sugar Bar in NYC or even Ultra Nate's club Sugar in Baltimore even Splash in NYC there are a few more but not many..these people and places have the sense to know not just 20 and 30 year olds go to these funtions that people our age actually still go out or still enjoy great entertainment and we certainly have more MONEY to spend as a whole,in most cases~!!
There's blame in a few places if you ask me"which you didn't" lol..But I told you anyway.
For the record Loleatta has never had a hard time getting a gig"TRUST THAT" and she get's PAID~!!
