    Disco CD Recommendations

Bernie and gang have put some really great recommendations for cd's to purchase on this site. I'd like to start adding to my collection, but because there are so many of different collections to choose from, I'm not sure which ones to pick up. Does anyone have any recommendations for disco cd compliations that I'd might like to pick up? I prefer collections with the full 12" versions on rather than the 45/7" versions. I'm open to mainstream club music as well as underground and other styles from about 1976 to about 83-85.

    So far I've picked up:
    • Salsoul 12" Master Series Volumes 1-3
    • Boris Midney Anthology Remastered 12" Versions
    • Chic - Chicism
    • Disco Connection Volume 1
    • Disco Connection Volume 2
    • Journey Into Paradise: The Larry Levan Story
    • Groove On Down: 12 Full Length Rare & Classic Disco/Boogie Cuts

If you can still get them the Jumpin’ collections by Harmless Records were fantastic for 12” disco. Failing that the Mastercut series or the countless number of compilations done by Joey Negro like the “Disco Spectrums” but they do tend to be filled with a lot of Space fillers a bit like the Disco Demand albums.

Which is why me and my fella tend to make our own cd's from vinal.

Thanks for the suggestions. I'll have to check the net for them. I'd make my own cd's but sadly all of my vinyl is currently in storage.

Thanks for the heads up on that Mark D. I actually have added a cd copy to my wishlist from a record shop in London that does mail order. I'd order the vinyl but I'm worried about it getting damaged in the mail especially coming all that way.

Thumbs up Re: Disco CD Recommendations

Some of the ones i've picked up over the years that i thought were good....

The Casablanca Records Story (4 CD set)
Grand 12 Inches Vol. 1,2,3(4 CD sets)(Vol. 4 is out, but i don't have it yet)
The "Rebound Records" compilations - there are at least 10 volumes to this series, each one focusing on a different aspect of Disco/Dance music - example: vol.3 - "The Best of Eurodisco" vol.5 - "The Best of House Music"
Phat Trax - "The Best of The Old School" (6 CD's - at least as far as I know)
    Philadelphia Int'l Records -"12" Singles" (2 CD's)
Disco Xplosion - (3 CD set)
    Smokin' Disco
Sams Records Extended Play - Vol. 1,2

and of course (just about) any of the Salsoul, Prelude or Westend Records compilations are worthy

There are also CD's released by "Hot Productions" which have a sliding scale as far as quality, but as far as catalogue....a lot of choices

Roulette Disco - Get Up & Move Your Body
Give Your Body Up (3 volumes)
    Philadelphia Classics
Spirit of Philadelphia (2 volumes - not always the full length mix)
Super Rare Disco (some great rare cuts, not all full length either)
    Disco Not Disco

I don't know how many of the above are still in print.

The Best of Megatone is good if you can find them.

    Re: Disco CD Recommendations

I'll repeat my recommendation for the "54" soundtrack, even for some of us who are deep into disco. Many of the songs aren't the extended 12" versions but the track arrangement and remastering is excellent. What's nice is I think you can still get it at a low price. There are 2 volumes out there. I have Volume one and based on the quality of this volume I feel confident in recommending volume 2.
    Find them and destroy them!

A great disco album with rare but good music from 1975 to 1979 is COCKTAIL DISCO compiled by DJ DIMITRI FROM PARIS.

And if you like DISCO and good HOUSE pick:

1 - IN THE HOUSE OF LOVE
2 - AFTER THE PLAYBOY MANSION
3 - A NIGHT AT THE PLAYBOY MANSION

All 3 compiled by DIMITRI FROM PARIS

Thanks for the recommendations gang. Much appreciated. I'm going to have to check these all out.

FYI, I got the boxset I ordered called "Disco Explosion" and sadly the only thing that best describes this set is "Y-E-E-E-U-C-K!!!" Talk about being disappointed. Very few actual disco tracks on the 3 cd set with the majority of the cuts being early 70's R&B - not what I was looking for - with about 8 tracks done in 2002 in old 70's disco style. Extremely disappointed with this.

Everyone's got different tastes, when it comes to this music, and I'm sorry you find this collection disappointing:icon_surprised:, but I feel I should clear up a couple of things, for those reading this post going forward.

None of these songs are tracks done in 2002 - what the copyright refers to is the company that is currently holding the rights to that track at present and who licensed it to the makers of this compilation.

All these songs are considered Disco, many of these being very hard to find dance classics (like Good Things Don't Last Forever - Ecstacy Pain & Passion, New York Moving - Ahzz, or Magic Carpet Ride - High Fidelity)

Then you have several straight up hits, that still get them on the floor at a party, at the Skating Rink, and in the bars (at least all the ones I've DJ'ed or attended)
    Changin' - Brass Construction
Is It In - Jimmy "Bo" Horne
Dance to The Drummer's Beat - Herman Kelly & Life
Boogie Oogie Oogie - A Taste of Honey

And the primary reason that I purchased this collection was the inclusion of several extremely hard to find productions by Disco Super Producer Patrick Adams and P&P Records, which to me alone, was reason enough to pick this up

    Songs like
My Baby's Got ESP - Four Below Zero
I Did it Again - Jessie Henderson
    Johnson's Jumpin' - Johnson Products

This collection is probably not a good pick for those just scratching the surface of Disco or not really fans of the actual sound or musical sensibilities that ruled the '70's but it definitely rates as a good collection in my book.

Thanks for the clearup regarding some of the tracks on this cd qdearl. There were a few tracks on the collection I liked, but overall I was extremely disappointed with it. What I found with a lot of the tracks was that they sounded more like R&B Jazz Funk material to me rather than what I'd called pure Disco. I might have another listen to the whole set... we'll see.

I don't think qdearl is alone on this. Both Marky and I sorta raved about it when it first came out. Not the best ever CD compilation, but a darned good one IMO.

    Hey Cdnbob!

I've realized over the years that you have to give it some time.

Last week I came across a compilation called BIG 12 INCHES that I remember purchasing years ago, mainly for the song: "Pow Wow" from Cory Daye.

At the time, I didn't find much interest for the rest of the tracks because I already had some of them on vinyl.

And guess what? I've discovered two tracks that I've never paid attention to:
    • To Each His Own - Faith, Hope And Charity
    • Standing Right Here - Melba Moore

The first was popular way before my interest for Disco music and the second one I had forgotten about.

Like qdearl says, this CD you bought contains great valued tracks.

Wait until you're in a better mood for another listening session.

    Who knows?

Maybe this box set will reveal itself.

    - Marcus
