    Philly Groove Tracks for Download!

I actually would have preferred to get these on CD, but I just discovered recently that a number of Philly Groove-related cuts are available as downloads from companies like iTunes.

I'm excited because there are rare tracks that haven't been put onto CD, or even released on vinyl back in the day. Like 'Sad Song', which is available as a 9 min track by Quickest Way Out, even though it was only ever put out as a 3 minute B side track. Also, iTunes has a number of Philly Groove Orchestra tracks (i.e. instrumental mixes of tunes) like Ain't He Bad, Let Us Entertain You, etc... Wow!

Also, the Tapestry version of 'He Was A Man' can be found in Pt 1 and Pt 2 forms. I think this was only officially released back in the day as a single by Leon Lee. Pt 1 of the Tapestry version was put on a CD a few years ago. It sounds different from Leon Lee released version.

Again, I would rather have these on CD than downloads, but like with the Ritchie Family, if that's the only way they're offering it (downloads), I'll take it!

    Hi DD,

Thanks for the offer. I've actually got quite a number of CDs with instrumentals. There was one that had instrumental mixes of tracks by the Delfonics (La La Means I Love You); Coup De Villes; and a bunch of First Choice tracks like Smarty Pants and Love Freeze. I've also had other CDs with instrumental mixes of a couple of Quickest Way Out/Flashlight tracks, like Thank You Baby.

The stuff I'm seeing on download right now (i.e. not on CD) include a number of tracks from Let Us Entertain You in instrumental format (including the full version (instrumental mix) of the title track, which is AKA First Choice Theme and is chopped on the LP); and a whole bunch of Quickest Way Out/Flashlight tracks.

I'm thinking these must be old mixes, not ones done recently. I don't think they can recreate those old mixes with the equipment today. Maybe they had three or four track masters where the vocals were on two and the two track instrumental mixdown took up the rest of the tape. That way, when they need to put out an instrumental and vocal version of the same track, they would not sound like they were mixed differently. I mean, that would at least explain the existence of the instrumental versions of all of these songs, which I doubt would have been used for TV performances, for example, since most were LP cuts only.
