    Lamont Dozier

Did anybody really play-Going Back to My Roots, when it came out? Its considered a classic now, but...it's one of those I can't quite feel right about. Am I missing something?:icon_question:

Since you ask...yes I did, but it never quite had enough umph! to make it a really well loved toon. Odyssey's version totally blew it out of the water when it came along and even the jazz-funk version by Ritchie Havens received a few more plays where I DJ'd.

Thanks Quinny, thats what I was wondering. I learned about a lot about "underground disco" in Chicago, where the taste is a lil bit different. I could never bring myself to pay $30 for an 80's reisue of it even though eveybody was freakin out on this song (probably thanks to Wax Poetics having the 12" featured).

where i clubbed the 12" promo of this was a massive record, REALLY massive and really opened the door to jazz funk

it was played in the early evening hours and late night hours as well, when i went out clubbing. i wouldn't say it was a HUGE hit back in the day, but it was definitely played in the clubs.

personally i think the Lamont version is far superior to Odysseys version.

I remember vividly dancing to this track in 1977. However the version I recall was a bit more 'harder edged' then Odyssey's or Lamont Dozier's and it certainly wasn't Richie Havens. I think I've asked this question before a few years back but was there a 'special disco mix' with a more pronounced bass line and a bit faster?

    The Disco Kid, I agree.

Only recently did I hear Lamont Dozier's 12," whose embittered singing and tribal lashings frame brilliant lyrics that Odyssey buried under fluffy beats and a wretched harmony bridge ("OOOH-WAAAAHH!"). I'm certain this misfire is why Odyssey isn't better regarded today; they should have quit after "1-2-3 (Shake Your Body Down)."
