Now I need You is such a great track (though liek I said I actually prefer Midnight Shift) but I'm not sure how radio friendly it would be--it's not quite as insistant as I Feel Love...
I'm still amazed at how quicklysuch a brilliant album was made thanks largely to moroder, Bob Esty (whose contributions I liek to point out as much as possible) and Summer
KRIS
There was a promo called 'Selected cuts from....OUAT' released. Tracks:
A. Queen for a day 5'26; Fairy tale high 3'59; Now I need you 4'02; Working the midnight shift 4'19.
B. Rumour has it 4'55; I love you 4;43; Happily ever after 3'51.
Does anyone know why Casablanca released this in two different formats. ie 1 x 12" with tracks both sides and 2 x 12" blank on the other sides.
Cat # NDB 20109DJ for both.
"Everyone knows the real reason why you got that part it was the time you spent on that casting couch"--Antoine Merriwether
"Excuse me, Miss Thing, but both of us spent time on that couch"--Blaine Edwards
The tracks which are together on the full album are 'mixed/joined' together as per or similar (start edited). Other tracks stop abruptly then new track starts without a gap.
I actually prefer the selection of OUAT tracks on the 1993 Donna Summer Anthology. On it, "Once Upon A Time", "Rumour Has It", and "I Love You" are back to back with no segues. I like that mixture.
If you had to pick one track, artist or movement which for you sums up 70s soul, jazz, dance and gospel what would it be for you?
For my part, looking back over the years, in my pre-teens -- i.e. early 70s -- I would probably have gone for something from Motown of Philly i.e. the Supremes Floy Joy or the O'Jays Love Train. Later on in the decade & under the dubious influence of flashing lights, flarier flares & the incessant beat of the disco drum, Heatwaves Groove Line & Donna Summers Once Upon a Time will have figured higher in my thoughts.

Well "Now I Need You / Working The Midnight Shift" were rather icy really don't you think ?. But that's what makes this album so F***king brilliant !.
It was "emotion on ice" .. and if there is one thing i like in discomusic .. it is the (sometimes) icy production combined with really emotional singing ..
It's a feeling you can't really explain but it may have to do with identifying yourself in this kind of music .. a very personal thing really.
(The people reading this who do identify with these kinda feelings will know what i mean).
Anyway: "Icy" is very "Nicy" for a lot of people :-).
Cheers.
Personally, I think Now I Need You is high up there ....alone. I think it's a masterpiece. I have never thought of it as being icy, in fact I can feel that those synths produced a rather warm sound. Is icy the word you were realling thinking?
Maybe 'Eerie' is a better word to describe the feeling i have when listening to these tracks .. With 'Now I Need You' i always feel like i'm all alone in some old derelict ghost house, desperatly looking for some safety and protection. Same goes for 'Working The Midnight Shift' but in this case i'm all alone doing the nightshift in some spooky hospital ward .. with cries of illness & death echoing in the distance :icon_eek:. No other recording 'ever' can get my fantasy going in such a way, thanks Donna !![]()
Well another thing I can say is this track would be totally at home in the Salsoul Disco Trance & Cosmic Flavas album :)) which I love
I like Midnight Shift even more than Need You--for me it brings up the perfect vision of a downtown, lonely street at night, maybe glistening from rain, with everyone else safe and having fun inside.
You're quite right, these superb tracks by Donna have the same qualities as many jazz-fusion tracks I love from the same era - they appeal to me on those days when I want to be melancholy and wallow in desolation! Then when I've come out of my mood I pick myself back up with 'HAPPY radio' or 'How Much How Much I Love You'.
