    the dark side of disco...

...is quite a good serie of compilations:

    http://www.discogs.com/release/181713
    http://www.discogs.com/release/570028
    http://www.discogs.com/release/880456

maybe it has been discussed already on the forum and I missed it. :icon_question:
anyway, the compilations contain superb tracks by the human league, alexander robotnick, yello, talking heads, men without hats, soft cell, tom tom club, ESG and others - a bit of new wave, synth-pop and electro in disco suits.
The more and more I'm getting addicted to the dark side of disco...the dark force is strong :icon_biggrin:

If you have any recommendations for some essential dark disco tunes to check, please let me know.

yeah, I'm interested in italo disco...mostly the earlier stuff though, and not too much the moroder style. I like some tracks by Gaz Nevada, BWH, Natasha King, Charlie, Gang, Kasso...

I only have the vocal version of dirty talk, but I gotta find the instrumental...the vocals are too crazy (not in its meaning, but the singing is too weird)
Kano is not my cup of tea normally, but I like the synth chorus a lot in "it's a war"

What I'm really looking for at the moment: some early 80's percussive NY disco clash...like ESG, Talking Heads, Tom Tom Club

Most of the tracks aren't disco in my opinion but offsprings: New-Wave mostly.. why they named these releases as they did is a mystery to me..
    Great tracks though!.
    Cheers.

In London, around 1980-1982 there were certain clubs that played 'new wave dance music'. It all sort of started with a club in Great Queen Street called Billys that becameThe Blitz and eventually ended up at Camden Palace, in Camden Town. Those tracks & more were very popular at those places. I remeber not having so much 'fun' at those places....everything was so serious...I'm not explaining this too well...:icon_rolleyes: Disco music was more uplifting, happy music, New Wave Dance was indeed darker. (As were the clubs)

Those were the days .. and thank God that New-Wave (Dance) was darker.. I recently saw a docu on tv that stated that after Disco had 'died' in 1980 (in the Usa that is) that the UK had picked it up, gave a whole new sound to it .. and exported it right back to the Usa .. As in "Depeche Mode, Soft Cell, Human League, Heaven 17, etc. But in the end: Disco is Disco, and New-Wave is New-Wave (dance). That's what's so great about 'Dance' music .. it's always progressed over the years and never got boring...
    Cheers.

It's really impressive how many acts, writers and producers emerged from italy during the eighties. these days there's not much output from italy club music wise.

As to the subject about disco and new wave: of course I wouldnt claim soft cell, human league, heaven 17 a. o. to be disco music.
When disco became a synonym for clubs, everything played at the venues was called disco music. In the end it's just dance music, true.
Still I see strong connections between classic disco and the later new wave dance stuff. Just think of donna summers "i feel love" and throbbing gristle "hot on the wheels of love" f.e.
As far as I know djs like Larry Levan and Ron Hardy used to play this new wave things a lot in their sets during the early 80's. So I guess somehow it's okay to call it the dark side of disco...

My friend in Chicago said he would hear some of that stuff at "House" clubs, but there were also "Dance Punk" clubs that played the more new wavey stuff. Though BOTH would play stuff like..
    Dinosaur L- Go Bang
    and stuff on ZE Records.

oh....i'd like to know why i fell in love with disco music and not with new wave even if my brother played both of them equaly on the stereo... well, i like many of new wave ones because it's what i've just told you, i heard it when i was a kid so when i recognize the songs i think about some memories, u know. And still don't understand why i don't like dance music and all this new kind of genres if have so big conection with disco music. That music is dancable! why i don't like it? i'm trying to open my mind to those sounds, and it's very haard to me cause i just can admit that i LOVE only very few house tracks as much as disco.... but disco really got me!
    the same with italodisco
