Does any know of any Portuguese Disco Artists (from Portugal)?
I haven't been able to find one. Was disco popular in Portugal
in the 1970's? If so can you give me the names of the
most popular artists?
Thanks for any help you can give.
The only one I'm aware of is:
"The Best Disco In Sound" LP by Jose Calvario- sorta rare to find these days- It's a collection of Costandinos'-like versions of old and famous Portuguese classics, like "Lisboa Antiga"("Old Lisbon")- the Lp was popular in my house in the late 70's as my parents knew all these songs by heart but never before in a "disco" context...never heard it anywhere else...can't say whether Mr Calvario is Portuguese or Canadian, as the record label's out of Canada.
The Lp is in the DiscoMusic discography

Thats funny, I was looking at Portuguese disco on ebay today. Search portugal disco on there. Theres 2 that look to be by Portuguese artists....Theres nice, um, "cover art" on one also..ha ha
Wasnt Leroy Gomez from Santa esmeralda from portugal?I mean the ancestry..
yes, I also read somewhere that Leroy Gomez is of Portuguese descent; if so his last name should've been GomeS, not GomeZ.
So was the whole Tavares (of "Heaven Must Be Missing..."fame) family; they're from New Bedford, Mass...lotsa Portuguese there too!
I'm guessing there's a shortage of Portuguese-made Disco due to the fact that the traditional Portuguese music is the "Fado", a lovelorn, sad and melodramatic style of music..."Portuguese Blues", if you will... the stereotypical "Disco" sound could've been too "happy"and "lightweight"...I think Discos would've been playing the regular North American/EuroDisco stuff BITD....
