JUST snagged Ripe!!! on Lp the other day and was taken in by the subtle charms of the cut, but let down by the remainder of the LP...
This is a nice smooth Linda Clifford-esque cut, really nice bass work and Cherry's voice is husky enough to add a pinch of drama to what might have been blander in less capable hands. Oh, and she's smoking hot on the cover too.
"I come from a world where there's nothing you can live for, except when day turns into night, I'm a star in neon lights..."
I remember having this lp. Isn't it the one with her bald on the cover, standing in front of some neon tubes?
I remember a cut off the lp called, "Where There's Smoke There's Fire". This brought back some memories, as I haven't heard nor owned this lp in many years.
She used to tour with David Bowie about the time of the Young American's lp. I saw David live during that time, and there was a bald black chick doing back-up. I didn't have any idea it was Ava Cherry until years later.
Also, back in the 80's she had a 12" out on Capitol called "Good Intentions (Don't Do Me A Lot Of Good)". It was pretty decent...gave it a few spins at the time. It was on Cherry Red vinyl
