Question on Dance Music Report Magazine & Others

I remember a magazine called Dance Music Report which came out in the 80's and 90's. The magazine was about 20-24 pages and contained, a weekly/monthly chart, articles, reviews, interviews, etc. Also they supplied the BPM's for each song(s) on the chart. It always seemed to be published in black & white and about 8.5x11 size. Does anyone else remember this magazine? Is it still around, and if so, where can I get copies/subscriptions?

Also speaking of dance & disco music magazines, does anyone know of, or can recommend any online e-zines related that are currently being published? Would especially be interested in ones that provide listings of BPM's.

Yes I do remember DMR ; I used to see it advertised all the time in BILLBOARD next to the dance column / charts.

Years ago I went into this old used bookstores and found about 100 copies of DMR for 25cents each.

I jumped on them and the guy who owned the store was curious why I would be interested in reading stuff from the 80's !!!

I also got into DMA [Dance Music Authority] for a few years...I loved this magazine and the various reviews & charts.

I just got an e-mail recently informing me that DMA was about to launch its website. So far nothing much happening about that but it is supposed to have launched on September 1st.

Yes, I saw that too. I've checked the site several times and nothing much seems to be happening.

Hi Eeryone, I can tell you a little about Dance Music Report Magazine (DMR), first off I was one of the Editors there, as a young DJ I subscribed to the Magazine when it was only a newsletter (Disco News), just a few sheets of paper and a staple, I watched evolve over the years into a full blown Magazine that became the Industrys Authority on Dance Mucic, we lead the way on Breaking Dance Muic News, the Magazine later joined forces with The Street Information Network, affectionately know as S.I.N. this was a network of the Top Movers and shakers, made up of Dj's, Radio Program Directors, Retailers, all of which reported to S.I.N on a regular Basis as to what was breaking for them in thier respective markets, that info was compiled and from that came the Charts, Club, Radio, Retail, and interviews, these were the most accurate Charts Bar None, they were later icorporated into DMR, this was a turning point for DMR, it brought it back the Mag to a new level, it enjoyed the revival for a while, and then a Magazine out of Canada called Street Sounds bought it, they tried to revamp it into a Newspaper format, and no one liked the new format, the type was hard to read, it looked like crap, they were using thier own information on music and charts, they began recieving a flurry of complaints from thr subscriber base, and it was then that i believe it all went wrong crashed and burned, a former writer of DMR started up a Magazine Called Dance Music Authority (DMA), it looked like and felt like DMR, that saw some success, and then i just stopped and it seemed like it just fell off the face of the Earth... thats it in a nut shell, hope it aswers some questions for you, on another note I remain a DJ today, still reading tha rags, still collecting music, and enjoy talking about the latest stuff...
I happen to have alot of old issues of DMR, I Also have alot of the photos and press releases the were in DMR, I have some real classic club photos too, and i believe a few tee's too...

    Hi djBobbyj,

Thanks for your interesting info. I used to buy DMR at a local Tower Records sotre in Japan and enjoyed it so much. Especially I looked forward to seeing the dance charts with songs' bpm (if I remeber correctly). Regrettably I lost them all as time went by, but appreciate the good memory

I was a Hi-NRG Reporter for DMR/DMA for about 5+ years. It was the Bible of current Dance Music! And Hot Tracks had a very tight relationship with the magazine. As well as, Larry Flick, of Billboard's Dance column.

There was no competition between Flick @ Billboard, and Furgeson @ DMR/DMA's Hi-NRG column. The Hi-NRG community, as a whole, always worked together. (I can't speak for the other departments, of either publication.) Since so much of our product-playlists were imported and promo-only music, we were the underdogs in the US publication markets.

When the name change to DMA happened, I assumed it was a corporate move. I continued to report to the same columnist, for the same column. At least, for a short-while, after the name change. (It has been 20 years.:icon_eek: So, my memory's a little fuzzy.)

As an avid reader - I was very aware of your name.I remember seeing your name pop up here & there....(You busy busy moose you ) When I moved ; I only kept the Hi-NRG pages and I find myself re-re-reading them very often.

I was always such a fan of Larry's page in Billboard [any fan of Donna's know Larry as the guy who coined the phrase "There are divas and then there is Donna Summer...:icon_lol:] and Dean's column in DMR.

I've remained friendly with Larry and he was the first to wish me a happy birthday this year on MySpace.
