    Northern Soul 2007 CD

Just been to collect my copy of Ian Levine's new CD/album, NORTHERN SOUL 2007. I had previously heard a selection of the new recordings on his YOUTUBE page. This is without doubt Ian's finest project to date. A great selection of modern, uplifting tracks performed by both established and new artists. Featured artists include EARLENE BENTLEY (her track WATER UNDER THE BRIDGE is superb), PEARLY GATES, THE FLIRTATIONS, EBONY ALLEYENE (A major new talent), CAROL JIANI (in a rare soulful mood), MARSHA RAVEN, GEE MORRIS and many more...
    IMO the outstanding tracks are:

    WATER UNDER THE BRIDGE......EARLENE BENTLEY
    MISTER MAGIC MAN.....EBONY ALLEYANE
STANDING ON MY OWN TWO FEET....ANGELO STARR
    NO MORE RAIN CLOUDS......GEE MORRIS
LIKE A LADY....VOICES WITH SOUL (This sensational!)

This new album comes highly recommended !

Officially the albums not out for another week but...selected dealers have it now ! It has a DVD too with performances of all the songs

Voices With Soul 'Like A Lady' is an essential track for 90% of the regulars here...and as Neil says, with favourites like Earlene Bentley and Carol Jiani on it there's plenty to interest aside from new names like Vanessa Haynes and Edwin Starr's brother, Angelo. The album has a particular 60's styled Motown sound that to our Disco educated ears works just fine too.

Quick note... Ebony Alleyne has her own fantastic album out too, called "Never Look Back". It's very Dionne Warwick/Bacharach & David in feel and it also has a cover of Marva Hicks 1978 Infinity dancer 'Looking Over My Shoulder' on it too.

And remember ... you heard it here first...there's another album coming up...and it will be RIGHT up discomusic.com's street !

    I haven't heard it yet.....I'm sure it's good...

But shouldn't it be "Modern Soul"

Cause my "Northern" friends are a lil bit anal...

    Glad I'm into disco...

There are some great tracks on the album. But the Northern Soul scene is a law unto itself.

Firstly they will (98% of the time) only play from vinyl, to the point were if a previously unreleased track from the 60's has come out on CD (as a lot now have) they will often have it pressed (bootlegged basically) onto a 7". This is despite the fact they a lot of them go into a fit if someone plays a bootleg from 30 years ago !

Secondly, they are all about 'discovering' new records.

So when an Ian Levine track called 'Standing On Solid Ground' by Sidney Barnes was released on 7" a few years back, it was ignored. Three years later, some Northern Soul DJ's started playing it at venues and it went massive. People love it but hadn't heard it first time round because the DJ's wouldn't didn't play it !

The Northern Soul 2007 album had three great singles released from it....so wait a few years and law of averages says at least one will resurface !
