and I'd be interesting in hearing people's votes for the WORST Motown cover. My vote would go to David Bowie and Mick Jagger's godawful "Dancing in the Streets". Yours?
I've heard numerous versions of Marvin's 'Whats Going On' over the years from smooth jazz covers to charity records (can't remember the artsts as I've tried to erase them from my memory!:icon_eek:) & they all stink! Why even try to improve on such sublime perfection?![]()
...ya gotta beat the street......
The very WORSE remake ever on a Motown cover has to be the DREADFUL remake of "Dont Leave Me This Way by the GROSS-OUT group The Communards. What was Motown thinking about letting these fools release this?
DANCE!!-To the BOOGIE WONDERLAND........
I agree, I'd probably say Cyndi Lauper's was the worst. But both Robert Palmer and Johnny Kemp have done really bad covers of Marvin Gaye songs. On the positive side, though, I didn't think the Madonna/Massive Attack version of "I Want You" was too bad. Some songs are just too personal to be re-done credibly, and I wish people would stop covering "What's Going On?". There's even a group (can't remember the name) who has re-done the entire album. And do you think it's ironic that neither of Motown's 2 most influential albums ("What's Going On?" and "Songs in the Key of Life") have the classic Motown sound?
