Thanks for the mention. I didn't know DCLarue had a website and that he sells his albums through it. That's good news. I like his first four albums very much and I didn't know there was a fifth one. Mine are all worn-out and a CD release is very welcomed.
    Thanks.

    Hi Eric

I didn't know DC sold his CDs on his website...

I must admit that the sound quality of the HOT compilation called LET THEM DANCE leaves a lto to be desired. The sound even varies from track to track.
Some sound good, some OK and some sawful.

I'll have to check it out...I only ripped the stuff from my vinyl collection years ago.

We miss you in DonnaLand ; aren't you excited about the latest news ???
    Sounds promising...

    Bernie only have the

    http://www.discomusic.com/records-more/7146_0_2_0_C/ and

    http://www.discomusic.com/records-more/6186_0_2_0_C/

    and the 12" stuff.

By the way, the DC Larue shop can be found here: The Official D.C. LaRue Store : Home

Hey Kris! What new Donna news? the interview where she mentions world music again? I've been really busy with some family mess but will go back to the Donna forum soon :D

I've had that Hot compilation for at least 10 years now and agree with you--the sound fluctuates wildly.

DC's website must be new (he has some fun photos of him and Donna Summer on it) as I swear I looked for web info on him just a year or less ago and it never came up... Anyway I went ahead and ordered my two fave albums of his--the two he did with Bob Esty, the sublime Confessions and Forces of the Night so I'll report on here how the quality is--I'm not as familiar with his other albums but if I like these I might get the others... DC Larue doesn't get a lot of attention, even among obscure disco fans... Being a big fan fo the underated Bob Esty I do think the two albums (And singles liek Real Thing) that Esty did with him are more interesting than the other stuff, even Cathedrals, etc--the Hot compilation really picks up with the three Esty tracks... I like the two post Esty ones from Star Baby and migth check out that album though apparantly as a whole it's much more rock/new wave than disco...

I think, for instance, the opening side long medley on Confessions is one of the best disco medleys I know of--it goes from memorable hook, song and production over and over...

    Re: DC Larue question

Yeah that's actually how I got into him. Just one track, the slow tempo Do You Want the Real Thing--however the 12" single (which stretches the song to a fairly great building 12 minutes) has a great fast BPM bside, You Can ALways Tell a Lady (by the Company She Keeps). Both tracks were done with Bob esty and have the kinda 1978 eurodisco shine that makes me very happy--sadly Lady doesn't seem to be on any CD, not even on the collection he has listed on his website of his fave tracks and rarities but I have a good vinyl copy.

If you don't know his work I really recommend it--smart, inventive disco that's some of my absolutely top favorites even if he doesn't seem to often make other people's top lists. His two albums with Esty as producer are the standouts as are the singles from them, Let Them Dance (from the Confessions album, it wa featured in TGIF too but not on the album and has some pretty interesting "bad side of disco" lyrics while still working as a great dance song) and Hot Jungle Drums and Voodoo Rhythms (from the rockier Forces of the Night album)

Yeah, "Do you want the real thing," was one of my favorites off of that movie soundtrack album; good soulful, light funky disco groove, with the girls singing in harmony and DC, I believe, singing lead alone with the girls backing him up (I think that was DC singing I am not sure).

    Re: DC Larue question

Yep that's DC in his sorta talk/singing voice. I used to think the 12" was stretched way too long but I now love every second of it. (the Hot CD compilation of his 12"s claims he was one of the first to really change and transform his songs when he made extended mixes, not just loop them). I was wrong above BTW--You Can Always Tell a Lady was in the TGIF movie but the only place it appears oddly is on the UK 12" bside to Let them Dance--not Real Thing even though that's the other TGIF track (at least on my copy)

    Hi:

Some days ago I wrote do D.C. Larue email with some questions, including remastering and so on.

Take a look at his answer.

    ================================================== ===

    Dear Ricardo:

Sorry for taking to long to reply to your e-mail.

The music available on my Page 1 website is only available in the digital CD configuration. There are no vinyl records available at this time.

The shopping cart will definitely mail/FEDEX/DHL/UPS the CDs you order to Brazil. There is no additional charge and it should take about three weeks for delivery.

Thank you for your interest in my music.

    Warmest Regards,
    DC LaRue

    ================================================== ====

I think that D.C. Laure himself answered. Am I corrrect?
    Cheers,
    Hessel

Wow! He responded, that's great. Pornos? Never knew he was into that scene; but his music was sort of seductive and lusty sounding come to think of it. Maybe that's why we all liked his music so much.

gay or straight pornos? I only ask because the story of Cathedrals is always referred to as being written after he split up with a girlfriend and the liner notes for the Casablanca Story boxset refer to him as being part of the "gay roster".

    Re: DC Larue question

Well at first I thought maybe my friend was confused with the infamous drag queen porn director, Chi Chi Larue but got this reply:

" No, believe me, this was D.C. LaRue. I
remember reading an interview with him around that time. I forget
where it was, but they had a link to one of the Calendars he had
photographed. The theme of the calendar was hot latin firemen or
something haha.. I did a search on his name after and came across some
videos, all latin themed, with his name on it.. I believe one was
called "Beeper Boys of El Barrio""

My other friend who met Larue made it quite clear he thought he was gay--I didn't really think it was argued about? It is a bit funny he ended up doing a bit of porn work just because his dance music, not just Cathedrals but Let Them Dance, etc, often seemed to critique the party scene (which i thought was part of its brilliance--being great to dance ot but ironically being a commentary too). I love the line in Dance "I think Kenny's life is shady/When the sun begins to set he starts to rise/when you ask him how he's doing/he can answer with his smile but not his eyes"--lines I can related to all too well with a few of my friends who I only see at night at clubs...

I always thought DC was out and proud.Cathedrals is about his cruising in
clubs and bars-those "dancehalls".The "where are they now" is referring to
all the one night stands and encounters,so many they could fill "Cathedrals"
-in fact, most of his music refers to gay culture and clubbing.

I think it's the book Saturday Night Forever that says Cathedrals was writen when his girlfriend left him--I always thought it was just a bit of mis information frankly (maybe even just the one word--girlfriend mistakenly used). That's the only place I'd read that. then again maybe at the time he gave a press interview where he said that

It HAS to be a mistake,as in"....when he left me,girlfriend,I was a WRECK!"
or 'girlfriend, when that man walked out on me..." hey,I guess I could be wrong but when you consider the lyrics it doesn't add up.Maybe we should ask him?!

    Re: DC Larue question

OK so my DC Larue CDs finally arrived!

I have good news and bad.

The bad first... These are CD-Rs, very well labeled and done ones but CDRs--and they were mastered from Vinyl (which is fairly clean but still very very obviously vinyl.

That said I'm really glad to have them on CD and feel good knowing that DC Larue himself (he signed the customs form) seems to have made them, got the profit from them and knows that people still appreciate his music. I'd be thrilled if others like Costandinos put even this little amoutn of work into getting their cds out there.

This is very nice when you think about it.

He took control of his catalogue and he makes sure that whoever wants it ; gets it.

Plus he pockets the profits...Good for him.

    Wish others would do that...

That's exactly it--while I wish he had his original master tapes (he probably either doens't own them or doens't have access to them) and released them the way Cerrone has--DC Larue was never as big as Cerrone (even though I find him very underated especially his work with Esty) and it's nice just to have a disco artist aknowledge there's interest in his recordings and to provide decent copies of them (to be honest the sound is better than some of the cuts in the Hott release of his 12") 'd be thrilled if someone liek Coastandinos did this... Larue also enclosed a short but nice handwritten note thanking me for my interest in his music

The albums are also pretty great--i still think the side long Confessions medley is particularly underated...
