    Recommendations for Hard Rock Disco

    Hello,

I am big fan of both Disco and Hard Rock music, and when the two genres come together I can't get enough. The problem is I've found this rarely happens, at least to my limited knowledge. I have come to the forum to ask if anyone out there can recommend some songs(or artists) to check out in which these two genres clash together. Some songs I'm referring to are songs like Fame(Irene Cara) or Games People Play(Alan Parsons Project). Songs that have that great sound and beat of disco, but also with blazing guitar solos and whatnot. Suggestions would be absolutely and greatly appreciated. Thank You.

I was never a fan of hard rock but between 1979 and 1980, artists tried bringing in rock elements to their disco releases and I loved a lot of it! Best of the bunch....

On Fire - T-Connection (hands down, the rockiest, most energetic disco track)
Jump The Gun - Three Degrees (for the best disco stompin' metal guitar solo!)
The Witch Queen album....specially their cover of Free's All Right Now
The Skatt Brothers album (Fear of Flying rocks!)
Do You Wanna Go Dancin' - Gary's Gang
    RRRRRRock - Foxy
Rock Me - Cerrone (sounds a lot like Hot Stuff but it works for me!)
Sleazy - Village People (think Twisted Sister here.....or rather Twisted Sisters!)
and bestest of the bunch: Evolution - Giorgio Moroder (a must-have masterpiece!)

And ... Cerrone: "Rocket In The Pocket", there's some awesome guitar on that one + the Drumsolo.

And... Paul Sabu: "We're Gonna Rock"

Ann Margret: "Love Rush"/Midnight Message"/"What I Do To Men"

Modern Rocketry: "I'm Not Your Stepping Stone"

Annabel Lamb: "Riders On The Storm"

What about Material with Nona Hendryx "Bustin Out"
or her fierce version of "Do What You Wanna Do" with
the Cage? Also on Z/Island is Was(not was) "Wheel Me Out"-
crunching, relentless and mesmorizing all at once!

Re: Recommendations for Hard Rock Disco

I'm not sure if you're looking for rock bands using the dance beat or just disco songs with a little rock edge.

Stuff by Van Halen, like the song Jump, fall under the hard rock songs with a danceable beat.

Then you got 'I Was Made For Lovin You' by KISS, 'Paradise Garage' by Tim Curry.

Then you got earlier examples of stuff that is rock but with a funky groove that is somewhat danceable like Kid Dynamite's 'Uphill Peace of Mind' and a whole bunch of songs by the Isley Brothers featuring some smoking lead rock guitar, like Who's That Lady from '73, and Live It Up from '74.

Kid Brother's album from 1979 is real fun to listen to. Guitar solos and fast disco beat. Some real "Rosco" music.

The perfect choice of song for this topic must definetely be "Hard Rock And Disco" by The Trammps. It's on the "Mixing It Up" 1980 LP. I don't know whether it cam out as a single though.

Re: Recommendations for Hard Rock Disco

I LOVE this thread! I LOVE pure disco, but I also love rock/rockers' music that approached/sounded like/WAS disco.

I'm not good at doing this off the top of my head. I'm going to have to go through all my old 12" singles (and all the compilation CD's I ever bought to get a single song) and come up with my list of suggestions.

But until I inventory my stock, may I suggest:

Sleeping Bag -- ZZ Top (especially the extended mix)
Viva Las Vegas -- ZZ Top (especially the extended mix)
Get Outta My Dreams -- Billy Ocean (extended mix)
Black Cars -- Gino Vanelli (extended mix)
Dancing In The Dark -- Bruce Springstein (extended mix)
She Bop -- Cyndi Lauper (extended mix)
This is my story -- I ain't ashamed to tell it:
I was hungry, and tired, and looking for love...

As I said in the rosco thread, love him or hate him (and he's my numeber one guilty pleasure) a ton of Jim Steinman's rock stuff approaches rock/disco/dance. Obvious ones being his production and songwriting work for Bonnie Tyler - I Need a Hero, Rebel Without a Clue and his cover with her of Band of Gold. Also his brilliant song Tonight is What it Means to Be Young for Streets of Fire (YouTube - Streets of Fire; Tonight is What it Means to be Young) or his original 1989 version of Good Girls Go to Heaven (Bad Go Everywhere) for Pandora's Box, which he later covered with Meat Loaf. Not sure if it really fits but Stienman also did the kinda dance/rock BillY Squier hit Rock Me Tonight (which has one o the most ridiculous videos of all time YouTube - Rock Me Tonite - Billy Squier (HQ Audio) )
