Notable / Favorite "Same Sex" Lyric'd Songs

[Mods, please feel free to move or delete this topic, as it may be a bit more expansive than "70's/80's Disco". But I didn't know where else to put it. Thank you!]

An offshoot of the current "Prince cover" thread...

What songs do you find interesting, appealing, or noteworthy because they're "same sex" songs?

They could be out-and-out gay from the get-go. They could be "same sex" because someone of the gender opposite of the original artist recorded the song without changing the pronouns. Or they could be re-recordings done explicitly to be "same sex."

    Some examples:

Steely Dan's "Rikki Don't Lose That Number" by Tom Robbins Band.
Prince's "When You Were Mine" by Cyndi Lauper.
Leslie Gore's "It's My Party" by Bryan Ferry.
"Same Sex" mix of "Strong Enough" by Cher.
"I Could Never Be Your Woman" by WhiteTown.
Just about anything by Village People.
This is my story -- I ain't ashamed to tell it:
I was hungry, and tired, and looking for love...

The Skatt Brothers "Walk The Night", "Life At The Outpost" and "Dancing For The Man"
Lou Reed "Walk On The Wild Side"

Tim Curry or Rough Trade "Birds Of A Feather"
The Teddy Boys "He Only Goes Out With Boys"
The Cars "You're All I Got Tonight" (in context if one was at a bathouse)
Elton Motello "Jet Boy Jet Girl"
Valentino or Carl Bean "I Was Born This Way"
    Joan Jett "Crimson And Clover"
Barbara Mason "Another Man (Is Beating My Time)"

Man to Man's 80s cover version of 'I Need a Man' was quite interesting but not as good as the original IMO.

I always felt that Sylvester was singing to another male, with no apologies...stuff like "You Make Me Feel", "Do You Wanna Funk" and especially "I (Who Have Nothing)" all seemed geared towards a definitely GAY crowd.

Also, on the "Fever" record (Fantasy Records, 1979) I believe on the track "Treat Me Right" the female singer is bemoaning the fact that her man is leaving her for ANOTHER guy...

Not disco but Cher fans have often debated her 70s ballad classic Way of Love (which I believe she didn't sing first). The way Cher sings the lyrics it sounds like she's talking about either a man who leaves her for another man, or a woman she was in love with who leaves her for a man...

Current UK star Sam Sparro (who's 80s synth style track Black and Gold is awesome and apparantly hard to escape in England), who I think is gay, did a great laid back cover of the recent Estelle hit, American Boy YouTube - Sam Sparro - American Boy (Radio 1 Live Lounge) .

Dead or Alive's songs always sounded like they definetly were being sung to a male lover, not a woman, but I dunno why, id on't think it was the lyrics. Maybe it was how aggressive they were. I'm sure there are tons more

Simone's remake of "HIM" - 1984 Electricity Records / UK

    Him, Him, Him
What am I gonna do about Him
He's gonna have to do without Him
Or do without Me, Me, Me
No one gets to get it for free
He's gonna have to do without Me
    Or do without Him..

    YouTube - Simone - Him

P.S. Eric, "The Way Of Love" is my all-time favorite CHER recording! Although I think she was just singing it exactly as written. With no same-sex agenda. The same way she sang "You'd better sit down, kids." Which was written from the Father's point of view.

Alison Moyet's gorgeous song Whispering Your Name....

Oh what else can I do
But try to give her more than she got from you
And when she wakes up suddenly and she says your name to me
I'll just hope its force of habit and not need

Cause she keeps whispering your name
She keeps on whispering your name
    Like she's just waiting
Dancin' helps relieve the pain, soothes your mind, makes you happy again

What a truly great NRG gem ; you can honestly feel the sadness in the girl's voice when she realizes that her man has been messing around with a guy.

I loved how hunky PAUL PARKER's lyrics made me think of so many great scenarios and there sure weren't any girls in sight...

BABY YOU CAN HAVE MY LOVIN' ANYTIME
Baby when I saw you You were loving somebody else
You couldn't see all the love in me I had to keep it to myself
More than just a stranger Nothing less than a man
Love shouldn't be such a tragedy
    I gotta make you understand...
Baby you can have my lovin' anytime
    You can have me anytime...

    or

    RIGHT ON TARGET
Love is an arrow Shoot me through & through
Love is an arrow And your aim is true
    You're right on target

Gee that's a record I have not heard for a million years. Brings back many many memories of my first steps into certain clubs!!! I must go fish that one out for a bit of a wallow.

    Lola by The Kinks

I met her in a club down in North Soho
Where you drink champagne and it tastes just like Cherry Cola
    C-O-L-A Cola.

She walked up to me and she asked me to dance.
I asked her name and in a dark brown voice she said, "Lola"
L-O-L-A Lola, lo lo lo Lola

Well, I'm not the world's most physical guy,
But when she squeezed me tight she nearly broke my spine
Oh my Lola, lo lo lo Lola

Well, I'm not dumb but I can't understand
Why she walks like a woman and talks like a man
Oh my Lola, lo lo lo Lola, lo lo lo Lola

Well, we drank champagne and danced all night,
    Under electric candlelight,
She picked me up and sat me on her knee,
She said, "Little boy won't you come home with me?"

Well, I'm not the world's most passionate guy,
But when I looked in her eyes,
I almost fell for my Lola,
Lo lo lo Lola, lo lo lo Lola

I pushed her away. I walked to the door.
I fell to the floor. I got down on my knees.
I looked at her, and she at me.

Well that's the way that I want it to stay.
I always want it to be that way for my Lola.
    Lo lo lo Lola.

Girls will be boys, and boys will be girls.
It's a mixed up, muddled up, shook up world,
except for Lola. Lo lo lo Lola. Lo lo lo Lola.

Well I left home just a week before,
and I never ever kissed a woman before,
Lola smiled and took me by the hand,
she said, "Little boy, gonna make you a man."

Well I'm not the world's most masculine man,
but I know what I am and that I'm a man,
    so is Lola.
Lo lo lo Lola. Lo lo lo Lola.

I agree CHer had no agenda when she sang Way of Love that way but I'm sure her producer questioed her not changing some words around...

Funny someone mentioned Alison Moyet as I was just talking about that song on a Pet Shop Boys forum--specifically the radio mix which some tyhought was done by the Boys under a diff name. Great song--although I always took the lyrics to be about a daughter...

Glad to know I'm not the only one....I class Whispering Your Name as one of those dancing-with-tears-in-my-eyes songs.

side note ..... this is exactly the version I've heard maybe 212 thousand times in the course of my life. Particularly the line :

Where you drink champagne and it tastes just like Cherry Cola.
    C-O-L-A Cola.

BUT ... just last night ... or was it the night before :icon_confused:.... I heard a bit different version on the radio in which Ray Davies clearly says :

Where you drink champagne and it tastes just like COCA Cola.
    C-O-L-A Cola.

Quick research and it appears that the LP version uses the words "COCA COLA " and it was changed for the single release to "CHERRY COLA " :icon_eek: .... (at the wishes of COKE ....???? )

Imagine Coca Cola not wanting all that repeated free advertising !! Those corporate lawyers are so smart !!!
    _______

---- more quick research ... as in ....WIKI :

    Trivia

    • The original lyrics had the word Coca-Cola but because of BBC Radio's policy against product placement, those words were changed to the generic "cherry cola." Cherry Cola was introduced by Coca-Cola 12 years later.

.... still had those corporate REAL THING ers been smart .... they would have "negotiated" for the American release to have contained the original wording .....
